Tehran, Iran (CNN)Iranian President Hassan Rouhani handily won re-election in what amounts to a victory for the Shiite nation's reformist camp and a sign that citizens favor fruitful engagement with the outside world.

"Great people of Iran, you are the victors of the #Elections," Rouhani said in a tweet translated from Farsi. "I humbly bow my head down to you. I will remain loyal to my promise to you."

Iranian presidents usually win the 2nd term anyway.

I am more interested in who is going to success dear leader Khamenei.

Rouhani last I checked would be decently positioned to take Khamenei's place with recent changes to some key councils and with his own reelection.

He is the most liberal one right? And by most liberal, I mean, the most liberal one is allowed to be to run for President.

Isn't Agent Orange's speech in Saudi Arabia very likely to condemn the Iranian leadership in either a direct or indirect way somehow, while simultaneously pledging the Saudi royals hundreds of billions of dollars in arms sales? I feel like we got quite lucky with this outcome.

Good man. Alternative was Ibrahim Raisi, who was a hardline rightwing cleric.

Is he actually a good man, or just 'good' relative to the other Iranian politicians in power or running in this regime? Genuine question.

I want to know how optimistic I should be about continuing our careful walk toward the fulfilling the agreement we made w/ one another and making further steps toward normalization of relations. Trump is an abominable idiot, so I cannot believe I'm saying I might find better luck hoping cool heads continue to prevail in Iran w/ Hassan Rouhani...

A continued step in the right direction. Shame it wont matter to the US as long as Orange Bigot is still running things. Weve always followed Saudi's lead in the middle east but Obama was making small steps to change that.

I mean you're not getting a Barack Obama. Its Islamic Republic of Iran. Baby steps. You have to see the alternatives, so it was either this or a clerical version of Ahmedinejad.

Whenever I watch Perselopolis, I'm reminded how awesome it would be to get Iran back to the days before the Revolution where it was basically another European country

Actually not quite. The days before the Islamic Revolution was an authoritative dictatorship that suppressed cultural/Islamic thought, imprisoned and executed their thinkers and the rural country was not doing so hot. The main cosmopolitan cities however were doing well, through wholesale import of American commercialism. This created "we need to take our country back" fervor with student groups and religious community. America/CIA was openly supporting the Shah which fueled the intense hatred even more.

Such a shame,
Iran has a huge regio-political-financial weight that is reduced to null because of the Revolution and exporting the Revolution.

Iranians are smart hardworking people
I hope one day they return to the country they used to be, exporting art, science and culture instead of weapons and militias.

I wish the Mongols had never went on a rampage for centuries. Iran would probably be in a much better place today. As well as the rest of the middle east.

Do you have any articles I can read about this? I wasn't aware Rouhani was even in the picture for Supreme Leader. I thought you needed a black turban.

If Raisi had won he would've almost definitely become the next Supreme Leader. Fortunately this outcome damages his chances quite a bit.

Both sides eh

I'll take a secular dictatorship over a religious theocracy any day of the week.

He's the best they're going to be able to get so long as Khamenei is in control. This is his reelection, so he's the guy that made the nuclear deal with Obama.

I may be confusing Rouhani specifically with a reformist generally, I'll see what I can find from my reading. Feel like last I heard of this was late last year.
