The IRS has been notoriously lax with regard to non-profit non-political designations. Remember the whole hullabaloo about the IRS not approving tax free status fast enough for various Tea Party groups during the Obama presidency, even though they were blatantly lobbying and promoting political candidates?

This was pretty much a clerical error on Spencer's part, I wouldn't read anything political into this. When he files correctly I'm sure his status will be restored.
