Is a watch jewelry?

I enjoy wearing a nice looking watch. I understand their usefulness is lacking these days outside of a smart watch (which I find uncool) So are watches just jewelry then? I find it easier to look at my wrist then pull my phone out to tell the time so I think they're still useful. What say you?

I don't really think it is, but they way you look at it may qualify as jewelry. It is definitely an accessory.

I think watches can be jewelry but not all watches are jewelry. Some are just watches. A nice watch is infinitely cooler than a smart watch.

I'd say so. Love me some watches. Even when my battery dies I still rock it. When people ask me the time I look at it and take a wild guess

G-Shock? A practical and affordable device that can withstand the elements, but most importantly tell time without fail.

Rolex? An extremely fine piece of jewelry that also tells the time, but nobody buys one for that purpose alone.

When you say "jewellery" I suppose you mean to say "accessory". Because a plain ring, armband, necklace, or tiara or what have you, by itself is also just an accessory. It has to be set in with some manner of 'jewels', actual or imitation, in order to be "jewellery". (Although the word probably does get used to collectively refer to various such vanity accessories collectively.)

In your case, yes it is. In the case of someone buying a simple watch for its utility (e.g. because he is often in situations where using a phone is prohibited but he still needs to check the time), it is not.

A watch, like other jewelry, is used for signalling. Signalling that you have money to waste on frivolities.

Good old peacocking. Let's hope you snag some tail with it.

As a pretty new watch enthusiast, I'd say yes, to a certain degree. Of course there are classic tool watches. But even those are mostly used as jewelry.

My father in law has trades watches, so they were around me for many years. First I wasn't interested at all, they made no sense to me. I mean, expensive watches are pretty useless, let's be real. I'm also a very modest person and don't like showing off, I don't need it to feel good about myself.

But after changing my profession three years ago, I started to appreciate luxury watches. Through my job, I got heavily involved in designing, developing and producing devices, as well as quality assurance. So I know exactly what is necessary to produce these watches and fell in love with the precision, attention to detail etc. Therefore I just enjoy watching and using these high precision, quality pieces of art, from an engineering perspective.

The vast majority of people I'm around don't know anything about watches and don't care. My father in law is the only person I talk to about watches, and we're nerding out to them.

I own a nice variety of different price points and brands. One Tissot, Oris, Montblanc, Breitling and Omega. Love everyone of them.

G Shocks for the win for me. I also own 4 or 5 cheap Walmart watches that I bought purely caused they looked nice.

A watch is an accessory that can also be a piece of jewelry.

A watch is an accessory.

Some watches can be considered jewelry, but I don't believe they are inherently jewelry. I could be wrong.

I think the practical function of a watch, at least before cell phones, saves it from being purely ornamental. That said there really is no need for one these days so when you see one it tends to be there for show.

No, it's a watch. I wear variations of different Casio calculator watches and currently have the F-91W on right now. I use it to tell time and am okay with water resistance. If it's jewelry, I'm not sure who would consider low-budget watches like that to be so.

Yes. If you already have a convenient clock on your phone, in your pocket... getting an additional clock/watch to wear on your wrist means you probably want attention.

I hear this argument a lot, but in reality it is much easier to glance at a watch than to grab your phone from whatever pocket you are keeping it in.

Absolutely not true.

You know, you have a phone and a computer at home. Checking an iphone in public means you probably want attention.
