Is anyone on GAF a dentist? And if so do you enjoy torturing people?

Okay maybe this is just Japanese dentists but it really boggles my mind sometimes.

I have had about two weeks of dentist appointments because of wisdom teeth coming in. The two on the left side impacted when they hit the teeth next to them. So today was the surgery day and I guess it went as well as something can when it involves breaking jaw bone and lots of blood. I asked to be knocked out, but unfortunately like most things in Japan it wasn't enough. I guess I came through once. Fuck that was the most painful thing I have felt. I guess they figured out i needed the foreigner sized dose and pumped more in because it only happened once.

Eventually i woke up in the wheel chair on the way to my room. Doctor came in and gave me my teeth as they hooked me up to an IV. One was broken in half I guess because it was lodged in too tight. So I get hooked up to the IV and oxygen tank and go nighty night. Wake up in I guess 2-3 hours for lunch. What the hell did the doc order me for lunch?

Goddamn white rice and udon(not the artist who has no idea about muscle definition the fat japanese noodles).

Well I now know why I read that you shouldn't drink from a straw after having teeth pulled. The suction process somehow messes with the blood clot and just hurts like hell. And combine that with the fact that white rice isn't really the best thing to cover up THE TASTE OF BLOOD.

So now I am just going to sit here and hope that somehow these crappy Japanese painkillers just have some miracle "kick in two hours late" feature.

Your doctor gave you lunch? Damn.

My dentist when he was getting rid of my wisdom teeth rode in late on a motorcycle and started working with his sunglasses still on after throwing on a coat :lol

I thought it was really cool.
Also no gas and no painkillers. Man up.

Were you a character on the little shop of horrors?

lol general aesthetic for tooth removal is weak. Get some injections in the back of your mouth and man up. And lol at you complaining about getting food. All I got was four teeth in a bag and a sticker. Yeah, a sticker. Wanna fight about it?

I wish I had asked for my wisdom teeth when I had them removed. Would have been nice to see how big they were.

Oh, and to people saying that general aesthetic isn't necessary for having wisdom teeth removed, obviously yours can't have been that bad. It's not the same for everybody. Mine were growing in at a near 90-degree angle, which means they had to dig back into the jaw behind all my teeth. And the OP specifically said that even when he was under general aesthetic, the pain still woke him up. That's not the kind of pain you can just numb.

I guess I didn't make it clear. This was full on surgery because the teeth were lodged in deep against the neighboring root. I had the right two teeth pulled last week normally.

So fuck off with your "Man up" bs

Edit: Nice to see someone in here has enough common sense to realize that every medical operation isn't the same.

You guys get stuff when you go to the dentist? Wow, here in the UK we have to give a lot of money to get a lot of pain like that

So odd to hear about people being put under for tooth extractions, but it seems to be a cultural thing. My mouth is a land of nightmares since my roots are ridiculously long and bend outwards at their ends (plus the top teeth might as well be sitting inside my sinuses) so I've always required surgical extractions, but--assuming that you can keep the noise from getting to you--novocaine does it's job perfectly.

I had local anaesthetic when I had my wisdoms out, but it was a relatively simply procedure, just grab and pull pretty much.

If the teeth become impacted then it is no longer a simply tooth extraction, but actual surgery, and yeah, you get general anaesthetic for that.

Feel for you OP, sounds like fucking hell!

I had removed 4 back teeth at once. each of these had to be spliced with hammer and chisel because they rooted so deep. all I had were 2 injections in the back of my mouth.
my face was swollen like a melon a whole week long.

so yea, man up

*manhug*

WRINSE WITH SALT WATER. I can't stress this enough. The first set of wisdom teeth I had removed were hell (impacted and deeply rooted). He almost dislodged my jaw (that was the most painful thing about the whole ordeal) and he had to saw my lower left tooth in like 3 bits or something. Those are sounds I will never forget...the cracking and sawing, the bloody mouth...*shudder*.

Afterwards I will not feeling very connected to the world and apparantly he said to me to wrinse with salt water, which just totally went through me and of course I didn't do that. I was bleeding from the wound for 2 days and after swallowing that much blood for 2 days, you don't want to try and take a poo...jesus that thing was hard as rock.

A few weeks later I had to go back for the other 2 teeth, I then remembered to wrinse with salt water and lo and behold: it stopped bleeding after a few hours (it could have something to do with the fact that the wole operation went smoother of course).

In short:

WRINSE WITH SALT WATER.

Doesn't the rice get into the wounds? When the doctor extracted my wisdom teeth, there have been some small holes on each side.

Sadly, I decided against a narcosis and thus only got a local anaesthesia. As a result, I witnessed everything, including the sawing of my bones and also when they did not inject enough anaesthetics...

To prevent an inflammation, they put in small stripes into the "holes" on the lower jaw, which had an awful taste. The doctor replaced them with new stripes (which always brought back this awful taste) 3 or four times over the course of two weeks. After that, everything was more or less fine. Could have been worse.

and i am a fucking little shit

For impacted wisdom teeth "surgery" is not uncommon here in the USA either. If removed improperly you're risking permanent nerve damage/losing sensation in your tongue. The dentist will know by X-rays whether to refer you to an oral surgeon or not.

The drill is the fucking worst :lol

I refuse to get any anesthetic these days cause they only offer needles and thats it. I'd rather have no needles in me thanksssss!

Yeah, fuck needles :(

Dentist is always surprised at how calm I take it but damn I suffer :lol I remember one time letting out an epic tear that rolled down the side of my face after the drill hit some what of a sweet spot :lol

I brush all the time now to avoid the dentist of course.

The needles don't hurt. Why don't you just close your eyes or something? I can't ever imagine getting any treatment without anaesthetic.

Pretty sure I need some teeth removed, which freaks me the fuck out.

Yeah I don't like needles, but I'm kind of used to them now.
The worst thing is keeping your mouth open for one hour.
The cramp is terrible and the dentist keeps saying"open up more please" :lol

My mouth was a battlefield last year (don't ever stop going to your dentist for over 2 years) and I had 14 holes(cavity) that needed to be fixed.

It was too much for my wallet and I had to go without anaesthetic for some of the treatments. Fuck me, those were some horrible moments! And it seems like it's so random when there will be pain and not. I've had cavaties really really close to the roots and yet no pain at all, even without anaesthetics. Yet this time, one cavity which was on the front tooth(nowhere near any roots or whatever) just hurt like hell. I remember never screaming but tears were flowing out of my eyes.

I only went to a dentist in Japan once for a minor procedure, only thing I vividly remember was the tv lodged in the ceiling playing Bambi with Japanese VAs and the ridiculously hot assistants this dentist pimp kept around.

I used to be so scared of the dentist, I didn't go for years but I eventually worked up the courage to go after I saw a local cosmetic dentist in a documentary on TV. The main dentist guy is supposed to be one of the best, he has won awards and does lectures in America, he made me feel much better about going to the dentist and didn't hurt when he gave me injections. Sometimes I am their only patient and they just take their time, no rush to get you out and get another patient in. They even have an overhead screen with movies to watch to take your mind off things.

Basically, if you're scared of the dentist then you need to find a good one who knows how to deal with nervous patients.

I'm not really nervous about going to the dentist (I guess I've hardened up throughout my life-long bad mouth hygiene), but it's never fun, and when there's no pain, it's the sound of the drill having this omnipresence in your skull that is fucking annoying. My dentist lets me listen to my own music and it's basically the only times I ever listen to Death Metal :lol

I hate wisdom teeth. I have them but no need to pull them out. Yet. Hope I never have to.

Same situation here. All mine are horizontal as well... I fear the day... Pain in the teeth is different from other pain, it is too close to your head or something. Hate it so much.

I just can't do it..I just can't stand knowing that a needle will be stuck in me. Its already hard enough to get a yearly flu shot.

Same shit with doctors :lol Open wide till your break your jaw.

When you get root canals this will be a nightmare for you. a) its almost unbearable without aneasthetics if still some life is in the nerves and b) the instruments used to clean the roots are basicly needles.

Yeah same here, mine were a mess. Had to go to hospital to have them removed a few years back. They only removed one at once because they said the swelling would have been too bad so I had to go in twice :(

Having a face like a damn hamster for a week after every operation was not fun, and it hurt like hell all week aswell.

ugh, i have to pick up my sister after she gets hers pulled today. she is 28 but I'm sure she will be acting like a 2 year old when i see her.

does everyone need to get theirs pulled? I'm 23 and have had no problems with them...yet?

It's good that you were asleep when they started smashing your teeth in half. I remember seeing it on youtube (or where ever), prior to having mine done, and it looked brutal.

Have fun looking like a chipmunk for the next week. :lol

I usually get sedation so I don't have to deal with anxiety. figure that I have a tgood jo with benefits and savings so why deal with the pain if I don't have to.

I had a problem with one of mine. It was coming out but pushing up against my other tooth. When I went in for an x-ray, however, he saw that one of my other molars (one that I didn't even know was growing in, or was giving me any pain), was practically growing sideways, and had to be taken out.

So that just goes to show you. You might not realize it, and you might not have any discomfort at the moment, but some people eventually will have to get them removed.

On the other hand, the dentist also said that I have another one growing in, but it's like the size of a corn kernel and will most likely disappear and get absorbed into my body, what ever the hell that means.

As said before, not everybody's wisdom teeth can simply be pulled. None of mine have passed through the gum, but my dentist keeps telling me to get a consult because the bottom ones are close to cutting into the normal teeth.

My doc removed two wisdom tooth from me and it took about 10 minutes each. He used some fancy cutter and cutted the tooth into four pieces and yanked them out. Didn't hurt at all. Easy case I guess.

Weird this thread popped up. I have a dentist appt tomorrow and 3 of my 4 wisdom teeth have came in. All of them are straight so far and the 4th one that hasn't "popped out" yet doesn't seem to be coming in crooked.

Am I going to have to get them removed?
