Is GAF too strict?

Slightly worried that I posted twice in creepshots. I was addressing the topic from a legalistic perspective, not defending them and certainly not blaming anybody else, but I'm worried that in his zeal to clean it up he might ban anything that even remotely looks like "not 100% against them" (which I am but might not have made clear).

Same here. I said creepshots should not be made illegal even though they're creepy because you should have absolutely no expectation of privacy in public, and taking pictures in public is perfectly legal. I think the real problem with the discussion in that thread was this weird undercurrent of an idea that people wouldn't take creepshots if women weren't such foul temptresses or whatever.

Me too, history has just became a fascinating subject for me especially the fringe esoterica. Why didn't they teach it like this in school? Way to make an interesting thing boring.

I can see how folks could think that but I have a tendency to type a stream of consciousness down to the keys without any thinking or reviewing, I'll have to start hitting "preview" before "post" in the future.

As for them darn mexicans
you may note that I haven't said anything about them for a few posts now and what I did say in the original thread in reference to a sketch which precipitated the whole escapade in the first place. Its not like I'm running around threads talking like Bumblebee Man all the time, it was a one off reference in regards to one thread. I apologize sincerely if I have affected your mexican sensibilities in any way and I shall refrain from mentioning them in any way, shape or form that may be interpreted by folks such as yourself in a derogatory fashion
. Cool, ese?

put your shovel down dude

Miscommunication is your own responsibility, so whether or not your real-life 'intent' comes across in a post is irrelevant, as you should've made an attempt at more eloquence before saying something that you'll be held 'accountable' for. I have made that mistake more than once on GAF, from being seen as sexist/victim-blaming/racist and so on. I'm still alive, because I make an attempt to express my intent further and as concise as possible, or in rare cases acknowledging i'm wrong about something or the way I conveyed a thought. That's why more often than not, a user isn't banned straight away unless what they said was clearly absurd. The poster usually responds back to those quoting and makes his/her case, which can clarify their opinions on a matter. If it is revealed that what they originally stated is just as bad as it sounded the first time (i.e. their intent), a ban usually happens. If it is realized that it was a consequence of poor communication or expression of a poser that resulted in them being 'dogpiled', the conversation moves on and that's that. It's not really too complicated.

The onus of respectful discussion should lie on both parties. Of course posters should consider their words and try to be clear, but communication is a two way street. To say that miscommunication is the fault of one party only is ridiculous.

Lol well now we know if that thread was a troll or not.

Wtf.

Trying to end it before 5:00 I see.

Gosh, can none of you see the humour in that statement based on what I said before it? It was meant as a joke, sheesh. "Ese" isn't derogatory in any way shape or form, I could have ended as "friend" or "homey" and noone would have complained.

Are you really all that sensitive and can't appreciate a bit of levity or is the tenterhooks thing I said earlier ringing true?

Aside from a few vociferous folk in this who can't seem to wait to see me banned nobody else is complaining.

Lighten up - like history did to the egyptians ;)

Is the guy that got banned for saying he would continue saying faggot outside GAF back yet, or was that a perma?

That was a really strange ban. If that were applied to cunt, no one from EU or Australia GAF would remain.

Uh, one word is universally offending as hell to a group of people while the other is offensive in one country. It's not quite the same.

I don't see anybody using the word 'faggot' as a term of endearment.

When your either in a position of power, or being tried at the stake. You lose your ability to make jokes at the expense of others.

I have a feeling you're the one that's going to be history

The term ese is used to mock people of Mexican decent quite often. As is chicka. It's been used on me quite often in a 'You don't know what you are talking about, chicka' way, and I'm not even Mexican.

I'm almost positive he knows this. Especially with that crazy condescending non-apology.

Oh, OK. Thats why I put the ;) after it to show that I meant it as tongue in cheek, a parting shot way of saying "No hard feelings, friend" if you will. I even checked up the meaning of the word on Yahoo answers before posting it as part of my new sensitivity campaign.

Sometimes you can't do right for doing wrong.

I think we're all trying to over analyse his every word here.

Yup. I feel like we aren't even listening to ourselves in hear anymore.

And you. You're already on your way to the gallows. Best to keep your head down, lest it finds the chopping block.

While I'm not calling for you ban on the not so funny jokes in here, have some advice: Don't ever use the bolded as a source of reliable information, like ever.

Adding a smilie to something that comes off as really insulting doesn't make it not insulting, ya know? The entire post and apology read 'Oh, those silly ignorant Mexicans, how adorable they are when they get offended over something us more enlightened folk think is funny /head pat'

Are you a mexican? Why are you so insulted by the word "ese"? Can't you see I meant it as a joke sorta like a digital nudge to ribs/no hard feelings thing? Can I get a mexican witness that's offended by my use of the word?

What a day, what a chuffin day...

People are going over my every statement with a magnifying glass and then twisting my intentions to suit their own projections, I feel like William Golding.

Aren't you stretching a bit by referring to his comment as 'really insulting'?

It's not like he's running around continuously offending mexicans, and I'm struggling to understand why you think his apology meant what you think it means.

Look, I'm all for calling out moronic/offensive posters who are making awful comments, but I'm just seeing a bit of light-heartedness here, while many others are looking for any excuse to jump down his throat and label him a horrific person.

I think people gang up on posters with ignorant opinions, or even lighthearted joking posts because they like the satisfaction of serving justice. I used to post thought provoking, devils advocate type posts back in the day but I won't do that anymore because of my last ban.
