Is GAF too strict?

Just because nobody from a certain group may be around (unlikely, because NeoGAF has almost 100,000 posters and has been viewed from every country in the world + Antarctica) doesn't mean you should say anything that might be offensive to that group. Don't talk smack behind anyone's back.

If you accidentally said something that was offensive and you apologize sincerely (i.e. no jokes), then you will likely be forgiven, like the poster who recently created a thread about "ladyboys." He explained, everything went OK.
 
I don't think GAF is as strict as some people make it out to be. I've said a bunch of stupid shit in the past and have only been banned like 2 times - once for port begging (petty reason to ban imo), and the last time was a voluntary year ban. I once got banned for making a risque joke about KFC and Africa, but it quickly got reversed when it was proven to be a reference to another thread.

I think port begging is kind of inconsistent, I don't see a lot of bans over this lately when people in some threads keeps complaining about no PC ports, or maybe I interpreted the term "port begging" wrong.

The rule has been a lot more lax lately. During the reign of Dragona though, you could be banned for a month for so much as suggesting you wanted to see a game on another platform. I think she had a chip on her shoulder though - current mods seem much more lenient and understanding.

But I didn't. I used it as "friend" as I thought that pigeon was mexican which is why he was getting to offended. I even checked before using it to make sure it was in the right context as I don't speak spanish but do watch TV.

Really? I thought that statement was correct as I'm sure I've read it used that way before, eg. "That was not in line with his Protestant sensibilities". Plus I never said anything to you about being mexican.

I'd like to take this moment to announce my mexican amnesty and never from this point forward shall I ever mention that ethnicity in any way, shape or form.

hmm, you could be right, I only remember a thread with duckroll that did all the banning but I could be wrong since I never posted in those threads :P

Sometimes I think it matters on whether or not the thread's topic is relevant to one of the mods, the rules are reinforced more tightly if it is, if it's something they don't care about, well go nuts. Not saying that's how it is but that's the impression I get.

A mod (I think Nirokak?) said that port begging is OK if:
- it's in an appropriate thread, like an announcement thread with announced platforms
- you don't act as if you don't want the chosen platform to get the game (i.e. "Wii U owners shouldn't get Bayonetta 2")

So it's fine to go into a "Bayo2 announced for Wii U" thread and say you wish it were on PS3/360 since it is relevant, but not in a "first Bayo2 gameplay" thread.

I may be slightly off, but that's what I remember. Personally, I feel like a certain mod may be a bit more harsh on the subject, but I am unsure.
 
The Creep thread had plenty of questionnables posts, it's been what 2-3 days?
I posted in the mummy thread, but just about the state of a near intact mummy. Pretty safe there, but again...

And apart from Kagari (who doesn't post in OT) I dont see any female mods. When Red Scarlet/Dragonna were there, they'd crack that whip on some of those comments that some think are "funny". like the guy who called Ndoll a whore for asking himif he liked to eat.

red scarlet was awesome, I don't really remember any crazy bans from her. She seemed really reasonable from her posts.
 
Didn't want to open a new thread, but would it be possible to request a ban? I've been reading GAF way more than I should given that school is fully underway. I know it wouldn't stop me from reading it, but it'd help deter me a bit. Next May would work for me.

Yeah, just go to the main page, find an admin/mod who's online, and PM them your request.

I was about to request a ban last week. Have it be for 6 months or something... but then I crawled back into the crack den which is gaf...

She gave out some info about a certain user because another person asked for it, I could be completely wrong about this, but that's what I remember, it seemed to me as a honest mistake.

I was still lurking on gaf before she left, but I remember she was quite helpful in a lot of threads.

Perhaps, but it I still find it an odd decisiosn to ban people for admitting to their bigotry outside of GAF. I don't see the issue if they can keep that shit to themselves on GAF, as they've probably learned to do in public.

God this place is way too addicting. I can't count how many times I have seriously said, "just one more thread." before bed. Endlessly refreshing the page hoping for something good to pop up in either ot or gaming. Heck, even right now I'm doing it. I REALLY want to play borderlands 2 but I cannot get off gaf to start the game. GAH it's really bad.

Your duty to be respectful lies in the level of absurdity or unconventional thinking being indicated in the post you're replying to (or again, quote-on-quote dog piling). Miscommunication is completely at fault of one party in that case. If they're being more collected with their articulation, then you're completely right that a respectful dialog is to be expected from all sides.

However, I think that's what most conversations on GAF consist of. Saying "Real discussion has become almost impossible on GAF" is ridiculous, imo. We're having a real discussion right now, are we not? You make it out to be a total clusterfuck of of opposing thoughts and endless pillory, when that's simply not the case.
