Is GAF too strict?

Although, sometimes it is better hearing from people who have a intimate understanding of the person the thread is about. I could, say, google someone a thread is about and get a vast ocean of information about that person which wouldn't tell me much. But having someone explain who the person is in the context of the thread is very enlightening.

I feel this is most appropriate in certain Pop-GAF threads where they'll just post a person, album title, and a bunch of gifs with a song list.

Is this album highly anticipated? Are they completely unknown?

What I'm saying is I don't like OPs that don't include any contextual information.

Of course, then I don't usually post in those threads.

I asked for a link, but considering this thread is about NeoGAF and your post was about the use of cis as an insult on NeoGAF I thought it was pretty clear I meant a link FROM NeoGAF.

Pretty sure Mumei made a comment awhile back saying that he checked to see if he ever did that. Things happen, whether they seem innocuous at the time there's always someone that takes offense to it. To what extent plays a big role in things as well.

edit: err sorry, not trying to call you out specifically or anything, but for some reason I thought that funny coming from you [Mumei] :\

GAF and Tumbler have been together for quite some time. Pretty sure there's more than one tumbler at GAF's behest.

I don't think that this is always a simple thing to address. I agree that if an environment is promoting tolerance and respect towards everyone, then it should ideally apply towards everyone. However, what gets challenged is whether or not perspective is being properly understood. Again, I think it's silly to suggest that a white man cannot be discriminated against on account of being a white male. However, what does get challenged often is when these experiences are offered in a dismissive fashion to suggest that we all have problems.

I don't think it's fair to suggest that I never have the right to be offended for prejudicial treatment. However, I do think it's disingenuous for me to think -- taking cumulative lifetime experiences into account -- that I truly understand what black people must feel like, or what women must feel like, or what gay people must feel like when they are discriminated against.

Explain how it works for me. Since I'm a man and Jewish I'm only allowed to get offended by insults related to being a Jew, but not anything about being a man or looking white (even though I'm not)?

The 'cite your privilege' function would be useful for someone like pigeon. Makes it easier for him to find the privilege that makes the opposing posters arguments invalid.

In which case, I'd be fine with the people openly insulting other posters being given a temp ban.

Though I wonder. Does Clark actually find "stop being such a cis" offensive, or is he just mad that he can't openly insult transsexual people?

i totally agree with barring all personal insults from one to another on gaf but if someone posts a thread about... lets say... someone who starts an apartment fire but doesn't pull the fire alarm on the way out because he doesn't want to waste time. he endangered others for his own selfish reasons and i wouldn't mind if posters said he was being a 'lil bitch'.

though you're post earlier stressed context and that not all instances of the use of the word are bannable, and since i would only use it in essentially the lightest contexts available we probably agree on its usage. i entered this thread thinking it was completely banned regardless of context. Given my read on TheGreatDivide and his challenging tone for a lot of policies here, I don't think that this post is really a good example, as it was -- I'm pretty sure -- used in a facetious fashion. Meaning, I don't think that he's a transgendered person using that phrase in an insulting fashion.

But I could be wrong.

Don't kid yourself. If context mattered as much as is being insisted, then there would've been less bans of footy-GAF/Non-USA-GAF, due to the differences in regional vernacular. From now on, you should probably stick to using my makeshift words of "special", "pigeon", and so forth

Insult? I vehemently disagree with this. I am just stating the facts and truth. If you want to form a collective of like minded individuals, great, but I am not going to be brow beat or bullied into something I am not in agreement with. We all can't live in a fucking fantasy world can we?

Nobody really knows what it's like to be discriminated against unless they're in that group. Of course, the inverse applies as well. Can black men or women say they know what it's like to be in a group that is thought of as being the instigators of some of the most atrocious injustices against humanity, a group that is thought of having an unfair advantage over other people?

Every group has their own unique problems, and I don't think anyone should say that any group doesn't have it as bad as they say they do... Unless there's verifiable proof that they're just talking bullshit, of course.

I think 90% of the time people know full well who it is. They just want to take a jab at the person and asking why we should care.
 
GAF is forgetting what it is, its getting all overly sensitive and and snobby. People seem to forget its basically a bunch of gaming nerds talking shit on the internet. I've never understood how anyone can get offended by anything that gets said on here.

It just feels like I am not ready. I don't know if it's because I am not worthy, or maybe I just don't have the confidence yet. Some how through physical training I think I can get to this point though.

I have to hope you aren't serious. We only have Devo's word to say that women face marginalization and violence?!? That's absurd. Look at any set of statistics on sexual violence, harassment, rape, etc., and understand that women live in a vastly different world then men . . . a world where they have to question every set of footsteps behind them at night, fearing rape or violence or worse. As far as marginalization goes, from workplace statistics and salary averages, to women's suffrage (wasn't that long ago), to social dynamics in everyday settings, you can easily spot the trend of disenfranchising, disempowering, and marginalizing women. I'm having trouble responding to your post, as I don't even know where to start.

Sissy - i.e. sister. Feminine. An insult used to imply an effeminate quality about a male, illustrating their failure to live up to the masculine gender role. Again, considered insulting because it references the feminine, which is lowly and horrible for a man. If you're a patriarchal, misogynistic pig, that is.

pussy - offensive for obvious reasons. Again, the simple act of invoking female genitalia is considered somehow insulting. This is offensive as hell. There is no inherent negativity, weakness, or fault about being a woman, having a vagina, etc. But because of our patriarchal society, we equate femininity with negativity, weakness, etc. So calling someone a "pussy" invokes inherent weakness and insult. That's bullshit, and as a decent human, you shouldn't be comfortable doing that.

Also, if bitch were analogous to asshole, then you could just say that. But as you've said, there something about bitch which makes it unique and pack a special punch. That something special is its sexist foundation.
