Is getting the original RE and remake worth it?

I've never played a Resident Evil. The closest I've come is the rental of Dino Crisis I played for twenty minutes and despised.

But the games have always seemed so cool to me but I've never gotten around to picking one up. I'm thinking about just blowing money on the whole series one day. Are the remake and original EXACTLY the same, or would it be worth it to have both.

They're not exactly the same but close enough so that you don't need to get the original, I think.

Or, well, you'll be missing out on some awesomely classic bad dialogue if you don't get it...

No, they're going to say

Get them before playing RE4, because you will taint yourself and not play the old ones.

They aren't nearly the same but I'd just go with Remake. It's basically the first one with a whole bunch of extra rooms, new enemies, and Lisa Trevor (shivers).

the gc resident evil remake is very good, it's the best version imo, better than the original and directors cut on the ps1.

stay away from re0, unless you decide you love the franchise.

re2 is also good, but i prefer re remake, it's the scariest re game imo.

re4 is also very good, it's the best re game.

Bingo. The remake and Resident Evil 4 are the ones that you will really enjoy at this point, I think, and they do offer vastly different experiences. If you decide you have time for the rest of the series, Code Veronica X and Zero are nice choices as well, I guess.

Honestly, though, CoolTrick has a point in that 4 is the only game in the series that hasn't absolutely pissed me off at some point by a couple of stupid, stupid design decisions. So if you only ever try one, try 4.

edit: To address your actual question, the remake completely replaces the original Resident Evil in my opinion.

If I had to make any sort of reccomendations for survival horror games this is what I would reccomend...

Resident Evil 4 (GC)
Resident Evil (GC)
Dino Crisis 2 (PSOne)

I played through REmake, thought it was pretty cool--nothing more or nothing less.

RE4 was certainly a better decesion to take the series (and thus by far the better game) but REmake is a fun title with some amazing atmosphere. And given how cheap you can find it yeah--it'd look into playing it.

They just put out a package deal with RE0 and REmake for 30 bucks, in fact.

Play REmake first :P

it's not even scary. it's like an arcade game where you shoot everything that moves.

still fun of course :)

I know it wasn't scary at all but I liked it more than the first Dino Crisis. Which was all right too.

I like the 2D RE games better than RE4. <shrug>

which are those, the gameboy ones? :p

i love REmake and RE0. a lot of people hate that sytle or RE game though.

id say REmake is definitly worth a try, and if you like that a lot, get RE0 too.

How about this:

Pick up the entire original series for whatever console is least expensive for you, that you have access too. RE1, RE2, RE3. Then play RE:CV, which is friggin' amazing.

Then play REmake and maybe Zero if you want.

Then top it off with RE4.

Trust me.

Just start playing the whole series on Gamecube and if you become a real fan, pick up the original RE on PS One to see what started it all.
Yes, bad voice acting is a must to truly experience the whole phenom.

What's wrong with RE:0?? I have it, had it for a loooooong time and never played it, i will get around to it but was wondering why some people dislike it.

DCX

DCX

The "zap system" is stupid, along with dropping items.

the new system in RE0 is wierd. once i got used to it, it wasnt a problem at all though.

i never had a problem with switching between characters (and controlling both at once is quite cool imo), but the item drop/no item box took some getting used to.

i love the game.

I didn't like zero. The whole 2 characters made it feel more like a squad game and less like you where alone in a creppy mansion. +when the AI took over they would waste your ammo like a son of a bitch.

I would play REmake 1st just to get a feel for where the series started. Then play 4 and if you still want more go back and get the other ones.

You have to at least play the original Resident Evil once. From the hilarious b-movie opening cinema, to the asstastic voice acting, you owe it to yourself to play the original(or Director's Cut). You can probably get it for real cheap on ebay for under $10 or less. Play the game that started it all, then play REmake.

Yeah, I would say: Get the remake of RE, then get Code Veronica if you like the remake. If you don't like the remake - get RE4.

Or, if you never want to touch the old games, just play RE4.

Just understand that the difference in gameplay between REmake and RE4 could not be more pronounced. REmake will play nothing like RE4, but will still be an awesome, atmospheric, and challenging game in it's own right.

And it has Jill Valentine.

Despite the awesomeness of RE4, I think REmake still holds up on its own merits. It's a different kind of game for sure, but I don't think the mere existence of RE4 somehow invalidates it.

And although it didn't get a makeover for the GC, RE2 is a great game as well. I've never played RE3 or CV.

REmake - Awesome graphics but the game itself bored me. Its dirt cheap now so you might as well get it.

RE2 - An excellent title. I hope Capcom will remake it like they did with the first next generation. Maybe after RE5 perhaps?

RE3 - In my opinion, this is the best Resident Evil. The pacing, difficulty, city, etc. Everything is very well done. Plus a Nemesis that pops out everywhere is pretty damn fun. Maybe for PS4/XB3/RVN2 they can remake this or something.

RECV - Its a damn fine game but gets boring around the time you swapped discs for the Dreamcast version.

get the gc RE version its better then the original... RE2 is still one of my favorites in the series behind only the newly released RE4.... Damn.. I miss Barry...

Yeah but weren't the colored FMVs only in the PC version?
What? Just the opening cinema was black and white until the the narrator introduced the characters.

Zero feels like more of the same, the story wasn't all that either.

i disagree. having two charachters to use at the same time or to switch between changes things up in a pretty significant way.

but it is still an RE game, and a sequel/prequel, so yes it is somewhat 'more of the same'. you can say that about every RE after 1 and up untill 4 though (and 4 is arguable i say).

if you want a good story read a book. video game stories suck in compairison to other forms of story telling.

seriously if your playing a game for the story, you need to try a bit more reading. or if your attention span cant handle that, then a good movie.
