Is Hidetaka Miyazaki the best game director of all time?

I was thinking about this earlier. At this point Miyazaki is the GOAT game director right? His track record since 2009 has been relentless in terms of putting out GOAT banger after GOAT banger. Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, Elden Ring… like what other game director has the same batting average? He has no bad games, and his ideas have literally invented a genre while also normalizing the idea of difficulty in video games again. It’s not unreasonable to say Miyazaki is the single best game director of all time, right?

It's Shigeru Miyamoto. He essentially laid down the foundation of the quintessential 1) 2D platformer [Super Mario Bros.], 2) top-down action-adventure [The Legend of Zelda], 3) 3D platformer [Super Mario 64], and 4) 3rd-person adventure [Ocarina of Time].

That resume alone and games in those two series (including Mario 3, ALttP, and Mario Galaxy) are practically enough to secure the top spot but there're plenty of other great games helmed by him, such as Donkey Kong (arcade), DK '94, Yoshi's Island, the very consistent Pikmin series, Wii Fit, Star Fox 64 and others. There's a pretty wide variety of gameplay styles here too, while the games listed in the OP are all essentially the same genre.

Granted, some of these he was credited as producer rather than director, but he was heavily involved in the design and development of every game listed here.

Demon's Souls - GOTY level
Dark Souls - GOAT level
Bloodborne - GOAT level
Sekiro - GOTY level
Elden Ring - GOAT level

I mean, it's not really close.

I have a feeling that some people literally only play FromSoft games...

If you open their library, is just that...

Actually, this is the kind of comment i see from people that don't play From games, they think it's not some kind of conspiracy. No, they're just much better than their contemporaries, i only see people hyping up shit like Zelda when they have no experience with From games.

Yes, he's definitely one of the best game directors of all time, if not the best. You can't deny the massive influence his games has had on the gaming industry and imo it has shaped the gaming landscape for the better. Innovative online features, focus on challenge and on player agency instead of cinematics and storytelling. He basically created a new genre single handedly. You don't see that everyday, especially in modern times.

Such a weak argument, laiying foundation has a lot of merit but it's not comparable to the actual quality of the games lol

Gimme Mikami or Kamiya over Miyamoto any day, let alone Miyazaki.

Huh, yes it is. It's actually far more relevant when talking about greatness. You're talking about a man who built something from practically nothing vs people who worked off his blueprints and those of others. How much influence a director had and how he changed the landscape of gaming is probably the single most important factor in determining the legacy and quality of a director/designer.

One of the best for sure.
It depends on your definition of "the best" and what you value more. There are plenty of directors like Miyamoto who have been way more influential and have a historical relevancy to gaming that someone like Miyazaki will never be able to match. But, IMO, if you simply take their games and put them all next to each other right now, no one makes or has made better games than Miyazaki.

Not really, not even close.

he is a great one, but his main resume is greatness over one genre, and he only really tried his hand on two..there are directors that have churned masterpieces along multiple genres, and that alone puts them on top of him.

Every other parameter is more or less subjective, especially considering that making games in an ensamble and not a solo venture, the director is one of the main pieces but not the only one, many great directors might have been screwed up by money, time, trust or lack thereof from their bosses.

think about it, if Kamiya didn' had the luxury of screwing up an entire game and redo it almost from the start, we would have never got resident evil 2, and by reflex we would have not had devil may cry either.

Not enough of a top level resume to put him in such high regards, but he's certainly carving his path. Let the man cook without the comparisons for now.

No, Souls games as excelent as they are, they are all a copy/paste formula with just minimal diferences here and there. Hes one of the most influencial modern game directors though. As the Souls genre has been used as inspiration to way too many games by now.

In Miyazaki we trust. He’s up there. He stomps on your favourite director not called Kojima.

For the people saying no, I wonder who’s your greatest developer. I dont think there that many actual developers with a consistent resume of highly rated hame.

Yes, as he is the most attractive human being on the face of planet earth also. Were there any doubts about it?

On a serious note, he created a whole new genre of videogames, as well as being an inspiration for new games which followed its steps, Souls-Like are everywhere nowadays. He also was responsible for harder games difficulty at a time where gamers where handled as dumbs by a wide industry margin. Difficult games where not his invention, but he definitely popularised it thanks to its reinvention of the action adventure rpg genre. Its real reach will be seen as more time passes on, its too soon to grasp or tell even now.

lol Miyamoto made a handful of historical important games for kids, he's not top 10.
He probably hasnt put a line of programming in a game since Mario 3 lol. No way he’s the best.
I dont think he was as hands on with the games he’s known for as much as much as people think he was.

You can watch Ben 10 as an adult, it's not forbidden, doesn't mean it's not made for kids, but you certainly can't compare with mature works like Godfather.
Actually games like Yoshis Island for example, sure you can finish the levels as a kid but to get 100 % you rather be an experienced gamer. The tone may be more mature sure but games rely heavily on gameplay, God Of War 2018 the same as Mario world so Mario World as a kids game may have better gameplay than say other titles with more mature tone. Idk man if you can't see the genius behind Miyamoto i can't help you sorry.
