Is it just me or does there seem to be very little hype for Smash Bros. 4?

In the context of this discussion I don't see what the problem is. Brawl was a huge success both financially and critically. It's one thing to dislike Brawl, which I don't have a problem with -- but to claim that it irreparably "damaged" the series is absurdly hyperbolic.

fully agree with this post

The damage comes from the changes to the game mechanics from Melee to make that appeal possible.
That really doesn’t qualify as “damage” to the extent that the earlier poster was suggesting. Brawl was a wildly successful game that some people didn’t like — just like every other successful game ever made.

If you want to claim that a game is “terrible” and that it irreparably “damaged” its series, go after Dino Crisis 3 or Final Fight: Streetwise. Brawl is a good game that didn’t live up to some people’s expectations. That’s it.

I’m rather hum-ho about it for a few reasons.

One is that I’m definitely feeling some diminishing returns on the graphics. While I won’t argue the new models are better, after seeing high-res dolphin screens of Brawl they don’t look that much better to me. Most of the upgrades seem more style/artistic than anything. I guess in my mind I expected a whole lot more from Nintendo characters at PS3 power levels.

The other, bigger reason is the same realization I had with Brawl. I’m not a teenager anymore nor some young twenty-something. When I bought Brawl the reality sunk in quick that the days of having group gaming nights were gone. Something that’s much more evident now that I am married with a son. I ended up playing brawl a tiny fraction of the previous two Smash games because I get very bored by myself. Well implemented online would fix this of course, but this is friend-codes-in-2014 Nintendo we are talking about so I’m not holding my breath.

Yes, Brawl is still a good game with an ongoing competitive scene despite Sakurai's balancing attempts.
Thinking back on my previous post, damage isn't a good way to describe the impact it had.

As for the topic I'll say that those who were disappointed with Brawl are going into Smash 4 with a "wait and see" approach.
For me it doesn't seem to have the same amount of hype as Brawl did during its dojo days.

What's funny is that he didn't really have an argument.. that about sums up these Smash threads. The legitimate criticisms are few and far in between, and shitting on the game is far more common.

A lot of willful ignorance, and selective memory.

No, those are the ones that still care about Nintendo and their offerings.
There are far more people, whether they liked Brawl or not, that walked away entirely.

The reason for this all is fairly obvious: Nintendo has completely forgotten how to hype their games. They should just hire Microsoft to market their titles. They would assuredly sell better than they are now. Nintendo's marketing over the past several years has been abysmal at best. The company just doesn't understand the market at all anymore, and its plainly obvious to see.

Regardless of Sakurai's personal reasons for moving away from the Dojo, someone at Nintendo should have said 'no' to him dropping it as a marketing tactic. It was so effective at getting fans excited about the product's release and was immediately visible to anyone interested, unlike these Miiverse posts, which prioritize Wii U/3DS owners over everyone else.

The Wii U doesn't use Friend Codes, and even the 3DS's Friend Codes are far better implemented than they were during the Wii days.

I'm one of regular smashgaf.

I admitted that I might posted little too excessive at smashgaf but it's only one of few games that I'm actually interested to buy for 2014. You could say that I'm hyped for SSB4 but I'm one of many realistic posters who would set a bar for low expectation for Super Smash Bros 4. I'm pretty sure that many members are like that in SmashGAF because they probably got burned by Brawl being overhyped. I know many people were burned out by Dojo and Brawl itself however I found daily images better because we don't get too much information at once so we would come to the game somewhat fresh hopefully. To be frank, I'm glad that we didn't get Dojo right now.

There are hypes in 5 mega threads and MANY small threads over the forum for some kind of actual informations.

It's okay to hyping for Smash 4 without hurting yourself at long you set your expectation LOW. I think people are afraid of getting Brawl 2.0 There are many reasons why people are not hyping in smashgaf thread with us because of

1. Some people got burned out by Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Dojo
2. Some people are disappointed that we are not getting other Dojo
3. Our thread can be little too fast sometime so people got overwhelmed by that
4. People are not satisfying enough with Daily Image informations
5. Some people are too old for Smash Hype hence MEH! or BEEN THAT AND DONE THAT. I have been there for Melee and Brawl; and I'm not letting my age stopping me from hyping one of most amazing and fun multiplayer games Hell, I'm looking forward to play Smash 4 with my children.
6. Some people are afraid that they wouldn't get their wanted characters
7. Some people are afraid that they might get Brawl 2.0; or gave up with smash because they wouldn't get Melee 2.0
8. Many more that I can't remember right now.

Didn't you hear? Sakurai made Brawl bad on purpose, so we're waiting for the Project M team to fix the new games.

But seriously, it mainly has to do with the new update method (the screenshot-a-day as opposed to a huge blog) and the fanbase fallout after Brawl's release. So it really just boils down to tempered expectations.

Sometimes i feel like the only one who went from melee to brawl with no problems whatsoever.

This is pretty much me, so I know I'll likely enjoy these two games.

I doubt tripping is enjoyable for casual players either
I've probably tripped less than 10 times in all the times I played Brawl. Though since I play a lot of free for alls I guess I've missed a lot of instances from pure on screen busyness.

Total sales, metacritic scores, the inane ramblings of the small competitive community: which could possibly be the least indicative of how the overall audience received the game?

yup, everyone on GAF who preferred Melee is a hardcore competitive player, and not just another average GAF member
totally!

Brawl was made for a different audience. Even though I don't believe that audience wouldn't have trouble acclimating to Melee's mechanics, the intention behind it was pretty clear. I also have a hunch that the speed and certain mechanics were slowed down because of the limitations of online play at the time.

I'm actually more hyped for SSB 4 since updates indicate that the game is attempting to adress issues with both both Brawl and Melee, while trying to find a common ground. There's teching, but more intentional this time and there seems to be a few more counterplay mechanics. This is opposed to Melee where a bulk of the high skill cap is mastering the speed of input required by wavedashing, a mechanic which by itself offers little to no counterplay.

Because I absolutely said, or even alluded to believing that.

Here, I'll help you in your quest of learning how to interpret other peoples' posts without tossing words into their mouth: you're delusional if you think the competitive community's perspective on Brawl shows a grander discontent among the general audience.

Care to post better examples?

Outside of internet message boards, prove to us that Melee was well received.

Edit: my bad. I misread your post! Sorry!

Speaking for myself, the pessimism due to lack of Wii U momentum, Nintendo/Japan decline has me in a state of meh. I can't be happy when the future is uncertain, even if Tropical Freeze is the second best platformer of all time and a 10/10, I just can't be yay excited, I have no energy to feel hyped.

Smash 4 looks to be everything I imagined, given Nintendo's Wii U meh reveal -> amazing end product once displayed on your screen I have no doubt that this will be another masterpiece. I mean it has Skyloft, music from Galaxy and a remix of Mega Man 2 Wily's Castle holy shit. The Little Mac theme was hype too. Can not wait.

What an idiotic statement. You'd think the game itself would take precedence over this kind of shit but NO it's about who allegedly gets trolled or not.

I love Brawl, tripping and all. I never got the hate for it.

I just can't stand the people who try to make it into a fighting game instead of the competitive platformer it is.

Like, what's the point of stripping out all of the fun items/characters and playing on the same flat stages with stock moves? KOF/SF/every 2D fighter ever made already do that and do it in a way that's still fun.

This Smash Bros. 4 doom forecast is absolutely toxic

YES!!

edit:

Don't even start with me.

On topic, I think it really depends who you are talking to. Most of the people who I know are pretty excited for a new smash, but then again, most of the people I talk to about it aren't really massive into any competitive scenes anyway. I thought Brawl was mostly enjoyable, even if it did basically destroy a lot of the things I liked about melee.

I'm pretty excited about it, and most of the people I know who don't actively follow it are happy to hear there is another Smash coming out.

huehuehuehuehuehuehue

So how many posts did it take for the thread to turn into a Melee vs. Brawl scratch fight? I can only assume this is some sort of record... we don't even have marginal data besides the ledge grab on how this game will play compared to the previous games.

They haven't shown any real time game play. Ie people playing it. Not a good indication that the game is anywhere near ready.

How is Smash a platformer?

Keep in mind what the goal of a platformer is.

ILike, what's the point of stripping out all of the fun items/characters and playing on the same flat stages with stock moves?
You have no idea what you're talking about.

KOF/SF/every 2D fighter ever made already do that and do it in a way that's still fun.
Clearly a significant number of people find it fun, or they wouldn't be playing it in large numbers twelve years later.

What is a competitive platformer

You mean the game that already has its fifth "OT" incarnation prerelease?
Every time I see that thread I am surprised.

There are no banned characters in competitive Smash. Also, there's an item switch for a reason (including a button that turns off all of them). Don't tell people how they should play it, it goes both ways. You can play FFAs with your grandma, or attend a tourney. This whining is like if people would decide no one should try to break world records in Mario Kart because "it's not fun" or whatever dumb reason.

There's not enough gameplay information.

This. If they had regular weekly announcements like MVC3 did it would be cascading to a head. No news means people cool on an announcement soooooooooo long after it was first made. Happens with ANY title.

Now if they suddenly had a loc test with a new character or something or something...

Is it just me or does there no hype for Uncharted 4?

And is it just me or does there no hype for Halo 5?

Cmon, when you compare it to other games that's coming you just know there's too much hype. Its OT is on its fifth for christsakes. Communities for Halo and Uncharted would love to have that kind of hype on their upcoming game.

I can agree that there probably less hype for Smash 4 pre-release than for Brawl pre-release but if you think there's very little hype at all in general, you need to check your eyes and/or expectations :/

a few hundred? hahaha
I wonder how many different random GAF posters have to say they dislike Brawl before maybe, just maybe, fanboys stop pulling the "vocal minority" crap out of their ass.

You do realize that literally the entirety of GAF could say they hated Brawl and they would still represent a minoirty of the general videogame buying population right?

But this is wrong; I was there. Brawl hype exploded with the very first reveal trailer.

"Holy shit, five new characters, Wario's finally here, Jesus Christ that music, HOLY SHIT IS THAT SOLID SNAKE?"

And Smash 4's reveal should have provoked a similar response with three new characters including HOLY SHIT MEGAMAN, yet it didn't.

But....smash 4 very much did have that response? Is there something im missing here?

you're joking right, Halo has so many threads, try using the search function

edit: and searching for Uncharted, it also has more threads than Smash
yeah where is the Halo/Uncharted hype indeed

Basically. Brawl sold great and had long legs, plus it was able to hold its price tag. That's not an universally hated game, like Other M which dropped to peanuts very soon and sold poorly. Brawl haters are reaching if they don't think they're a vocal minority.
