Is it just me or is there precious little hype for Assassin's Creed: Syndicate?

I'm really sorry but you don't seem to understand how AAA games are made. Give more time, give more money, give more freedom, do you realize that's not how it works ? Compromises can be found but when you put 100 millions on the table, of course you're also gonna make sure they're is enough to compensate at the end.
 
Oh man Crossing Eden was banned? Who's going to tell us that broken/abusable elements in the gameplay are the player's fault for using them?

Anyway Unity sucked for more reasons than just glitches, Rogue was platform restricted (should've ported it first half of this year Ubi), series interest in general has been downhill for a while, and Syndicate just doesn't look all that hot. Their overhaul with Unity gambit failed, and they're too afraid of missing a year to get quality back to where it needs to be.

LMAO. Right, then if your view is that it's fine for these games to be complete trash because "they put a lot of money in, it's a AAA title", despite various AAA titles coming out every year with higher quality than this (some of them even coming from the same developers), then go right ahead, I'm clearly the misinformed one.

I played AC Rogue as I heard it had a decent story. The story was okay, but ultimately nothing really happens at the end. Unity was even worse with
Rachel(?) saying that even though you found out the sage's bones location, it would be too much of a pain in the ass for the Templars to bother aquiring them, but thanks for all the help. Laters!

I just want an AC game with a compelling story. I am actually interested in AC Syndicate because Austin Wintory composed the game's soundtrack. He composed the music to Journey and The Banner Saga.

Setting, graphics, gameplay, etc. all look too similar to the last game. It doesn't feel fresh, even by Assassin's Creed standards. Might've been okay if this was a Brotherhood-esque sequel, but it's not.
 
wow you might be right. I have played and beaten most Assassin's Creed games and I had no idea it was out next week. I'm drained from this series. I'm in no rush to play another one just yet.

I know i'll end up buying it sometime next year though. =/
 
I still enjoy the games although Unity was a step back - in term of systems not in terms of tech on PS4 for me. However there is so much hate and ill will towards the franchise out there that discussing it isn't much fun anymore. You almost feel wrong for still liking it at this point.

Yeah, here's the problem with that though. If Ubisoft stops fucking around and uses the music properly then it'l be great. But if you end up hearing music only through cut-scenes and small moments here and there during main missions like Unity then you're only going to be hearing music for a total of 2-3 hours in a game that takes 50 hours to beat, 100 hours to complete.

Really? Now ive lost any interest, will buy at bargain bin prices. The main reason i play thus franchise is the modern day story, which has gone to shit after 3. Was a bit interesting in black flag, but without another Desmond like character, im losing interest. I need my Ancient Aliens.
 
My girlfriend loves the series, so it’s going to be a day one purchase for me, although I am very worried on how the game will perform (bugs, frame rate etc) based on my experience with AC Unity (played it on PS4).

I still think that the best entries in the franchise (I have played them all) are AC2, Brotherhood and AC Pirates/Rogue.

I have to admit that I really like the hard work that ubisoft’s designers put in order to represent the era that each game is based on.

Someone could argue that you could use AC Unity as a teaching tool for history students and visually show them how Paris was architecturally at that period of time.

Recreating the French revolution era Paris, costumes, sounds, weapons and even church psalms in AC Unity was really impressive and I can’t wait to see what the team will do with the industrial revolution London.

Gameplay wise, I don’t think that they can innovate more without alienating the game (using ships in Pirates/Rogue was a risk that paid off, although we had limited ship usage on AC 3).

Maybe they will introduce more transportation means (based on the era – I am thinking the two new Sherlock Holmes movies as a base - boats in canals/trains/steam based cars/horses etc) and more interaction with interior spaces in AC Syndicate.

The map cleaning, pseudo open world, formula will never change.

Architecturally, the game was great. I'd just taken a course on the French Revolution and watched a really long movie on it it, and it really bugged me in Unity how the timeline was completely all over the place unless if you knew what order to play missions in. The historical aspect of the game was pretty disappointing to me.

It's back according to the creative director.. Hopefully playable. Where are you getting that it's not?

[Assassin's Creed 3] was the end of the Desmond cycle. And then we started up the new cycle, which I think will become much clearer with Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, without spoiling it.

I can’t go into details about the present-day story, other than to say it is coming back, it is going to make sense for our players, and they’re going to understand the conflict between the Assassins and the Templars.

One of the things that’s been super important for me and for the team is to make sure the player feels in the present-day story that he or she has importance.

I agree that the actual historical facts are all over the place but, in the end of the day, it’s just a game, so the story writers are taking a lot of liberties.

The reason why I wrote about architectural design (or costume/sound) is because a lot of people dismiss the game based on franchise fatigue (I admit that they have a point) and they don’t take on account other areas that the game excels.

If Ubisoft designers keep this level of design and recreate the era atmosphere in AC Syndicate London it will be great.

I agree on the story, but I didn't realize Austin was doing the OST. First bit of actual hype I've got for the game.
 
I know it's wrong to say this because there are people whose jobs depend on these titles, but I hope this one bombs (by franchise standards) so the series takes a break or releases a great game like AC II again.
 
People are just burned out on the franchise. It's sequel fatigue. Hopefully Ubi will give the series a break and come back with something fresh in a few years.
 
I'm surprised people want modern gameplay. The modern stuff was always the worst, most boring and tedious parts in AC1 and 2, and I remember this being a very popular opinion that the devs should take out modern stuff and just focus on the historical aspect. I found the modern gameplay in 3 and Revelations to be bad too, I just didn't care at all about those characters.
 
It'll sell 10 million copies and Ubisoft will keep pumping them out. There is a decline in sales, but it still sells more than most games could ever dream of.

The last time the modern story was really advertised besides ACIII (even that was just the opening game cinematic) was Revelations with Desmond stuck in Inception land, they gave Desmond a boring needless backstory before killing him off. It's like they looked at all the backlash and thought make it as short as possible, when the modern integration is more annoying than ever.

It really kills the atmosphere of the time period when in Unity there's a some computer person talking to me telling me who these people are and what's going to happen. Looks like in Syndicate it's the same thing, with names popping up over historical characters. Pretty much the main point of the modern story these days is justifying all the collectibles.

3 and Revelations were pretty bad. AC1 had the least developed gameplay but still, it was interesting. I always really liked the Assassin's Creed II ending with Minerva talking to Desmond through Ezio, thought that was brilliant. It felt like the modern story just gave everything a point. From what I remember half liked it. And Brotherhood's modern gameplay was pretty good.

Good. These shit games need to stop selling on name only. Ubisoft has turned Assassin's Creed into a joke and there needs to ne some accountability.

Did Unity sell 10 million...I highly doubt it. With no free bundles this year we will see how relevant AC really is. Xbox One bailed them out last year.

Did they expect it to inevitably decline after a few entries, and try to extract as much revenue as possible in as short a time as possible and at low a cost as possible (ie. like the Guitar Hero franchise) before switching to Watch Dogs?

Or did they want an evergreen franchise (which AC definitely could've been) but just screw up the execution with short-sighted business decisions and by putting the wrong people in charge?

You'd think they want some good will for the series with the movie out next year.
 
If I can't play the modern day time, it's another positive for me as I hate the present day crap.

Personally, if Ubisoft was to ever take a year off, they should just "reset" the franchise with no present day, no abstergo, no animus, etc. Instead, you should simply play as an Assassin in a set time period and place and the story should be built in the game itself. Each following game would be in another time period and place but always moving forward. Eventually, the final game would be set in the present day and that's where it would conclude.

I only started this franchise with Black Flag and it was because of the setting, atmosphere, immersion and setup. I didn't like the present day at all especially since it's in a 100% first person view which I hate. For me, it's Rogue > Black Flag > Unity.

I played AC II after Black Flag which was probably a mistake but while Ezio is a good character, the game was slow and boring for me. I quit in sequence five or six. Can't remember which.

With that all said, im obviously not burnt out or to where AC needs to be "reset". My major complaint from Unity was the controls, free running and response time. It was worse and more aggravating and frustrating than either Rogue or Black Flag. The free running should simply be "hold R2/RT" and move the analog in the direction you want to go. The "X/A" button to jump shouldn't exist. To go inside windows, etc., holding R2/RT and moving the analog in the direction of the open window should automatically make the character go inside the window. Other than that, not being able to whistle(or knock) to get an enemy's attention and not being able to use an enemy as a human shield were my other complaints. After that, way too many NPC's on screen and the "last known position" crap.

Majority of my complaints weren't complaints in Rogue or Black Flag. I'm just hoping that Syndicate fixed majority of them and every gameplay element (like that circle ring around the character) should have an on/off option. This way, the user can play the way they want.

Majority here aren't hyped for Syndicate but I am as it's my last pre-order and pick up on release day game until February as I don't have Xbox One (Tomb Raider) and I have no interest in Fallout 4. Six more days to go!!!
 
They should just remove all animus stuff and make the games take place in some fantasy universe. Historically accurate cities and all are cool but they don't properly utilize the settings they create. To me it feels it's more of a weight that holds them back. Imagine how cool buildings and city structures they could make if they had free hands to do what ever they want.

or they should put George R. R. Martin in animus and Game of Thrones is found to be embedded into his dna so AC: King's Landing here I come!
 
I loved black flag, but waited on Unity and well never bought into that mess. If it wasn't for the few topics on gaf about Syndicate I wouldn't even know it's a thing. I'll be waiting again for peer reviews and impressions on this one before even considering it.

No, no, no that's not what I'm saying (sorry if I'm unclear). Crticitizing the final product is of course fine, everybody knows what are the good and bad aspects of Assassin's Creed games. The amount of money and passion they put in it doesn't excuse anything regarding the game itself.


That being said, you can't - you really can't - start to discuss how they should handle their business if you're not at least a little bit informed on how video game development works, especially in AAA environment. I'm once again sorry to tell you that it's a very childish view to state "publishers should just give money and shut their mouths to let the creative people do their creative jobs, because that's how good games are made". Same goes for "giving more time", which basically translate to "give them more millions" and throw away a large part of the money invested in marketing.


No, no, no. The Blood Dragon example really indicates me that you don't understand the stakes here. Of course you can take more risks for a cheap DLC than for the AAA release of the year, that doesn't mean publishers can afford to do this every time (do we even have infos on the revenues of Blood Dragon ? It was loved but was it commercially viable ?).


And that's the whole point, nothing more, I criticize a lot Assassin's Creed every year myself but I just avoid talking about business & work methods I don't know about and you should do the same.
 
I don't know what to say but this time even the graphic seems off to me. I look at it and yeah it's not horrible but don't leave me impressed in anything. I see mediocrity everywhere. Lightning prebaked, AF meh and texture seems too much low detailed in many spot. Yeah it's 1080p but I don't see anything to be enthusiastic.
 
I saw an advert on TV yesterday but I thought it was just the beginning of a long marketing campaign. I had no idea it was out next week!

I'm not interested for a number of reasons:

- Looks like the same crappy combat that's been outdated since Arkham Asylum.

- I'm sick to death of open world games with their copy and paste mission design.

- Boring location, I was born and live in London but I think this series belongs is better suited to Ancient / Medieval history.
