Is Kotaku in danger of shutting down?

Kotaku has enough talent that they could pool together and start their own thing, like all those ex-bungie empolyees did with highwire studios.

I hope they can anyway, because it would really suck for them to be stuck in unemployment limbo because of gawker.

Really glad Hogan won the case, purely because that kind of journalism is NOT OKAY BY ANY MEANS, and we now have another huge profile case that we can refer to if something this fucking scummy happens again.

this has nothing to do with GG though . this guy and gawker brought it on themselves. even he deserves to feel like shit from people like them if he did that with the girl in aforementioned article.

Yeah, it's fucking dumb. Everyone was against Gawker in this case because they were horribly in the wrong. It might as well be GG celebrating a Leicester City premier league win.

It doesn't have to be good all around for it to still be good. If Kotaku is a profitable division I'd think it would get snapped up, either directly or most of the talent individually. Might even work out better for them in the long run.

'this guy?' Surely you don't think or suggest Klepek had anything to do with the Hogan tape or Denton's outing of a closeted executive?

Kotaku is a hit or miss for me and most of time, the only thing I read from their posts are game reviews, but I don't understand the whole kotaku hate.

But then again, I'm more of a Gizmodo fan than kotaku and Gawker is a TMZ level garbage.

Best news i've heard today. Yay.
People celebrating that a site that they have absolutely no obligation to read is closing down. For what? Internet pride? Kotaku has had some of the most informative articles about game development over the past few years including the nitty gritty of projects that the public was wondering about. You are celebrating that some people might be losing their jobs and that one of the most informative gaming sites is closing down, that's fucking disgusting. >:(

wow some people are just.....

The hell? I used to respect Jamie for her work for The Wayne Foundation but maybe she's not the person I thought she was.

People losing jobs is good news to you?

You must have a great life.

Because that is obviously the only thing whatsoever that may happen.

Are people being purposely obtuse? Gawker losing this lawsuit is good news to the person you quoted, obviously.

The hell? I used to respect Jamie for her work for The Wayne Foundation but maybe she's not the person I thought she was.

Well, judging by what she tweeted Patrick might not be the person you think he is. Will have to look up those misquotes.

what

I rather dislike Kotaku, but being happy people are out of jobs is a terrible thing to do.

What?

I mean, I don't know that poster's motivations for being glad to hear this, maybe they are shitty. But MY reason for being happy is we have a nice precedent set up to warn others that personal privacy still matters in the digital age at least a little bit. Gawker has ruined people's lives before. This is more important than a handful of jobs, I'm sorry.

Besides, if Kotaku and others are profitable, they will survive. They'll get sold off.

While Gawker is the worst and absolutely deserves to fold, I'm really sorry for Kotaku, especially Jason Schreier. That guy does fantastic work. The whole secrecy surrounding gaming is lamest thing ever. If Kotaku ends, I hope he gets picked up immediately, because losing his articles would be a huge loss for gaming.

Gawker is a terrible site and deserved what was coming for awhile.

However, you can still be sad for the actual decent journalists that are in the crossfire caused by their idiot employers.

Jobs will always be lost, so to hold them as a holy grail is awfully weird, and this thread has been doing a lot of it.

The reality here is Gawker is a shady fucking site, and Kotaku, by association to Gawker, will probably be going down with them for finally getting their just desserts.

What gold you can praise a few guys at Kotaku for offering is contrasted by the filth Gawker represents.

If any of the people at Kotaku are worth their salt, they'll find a place. Be concerned for those who you think might not be able to handle the transition.

I'm happy that the Hulk won the case.

Kotaku, possibly disappearing is like a bonus.

Sucks for the people that work there, but i'm not gonna pretend that i'm not excited to see a site i loath possibly disappear.

Agreed. Also, Hulk Hogan the racist piece of shit getting a huge pay day...

Even before this Hogan fiasco, Kotaku has been burning bridges with the gaming industry. So yes I think they have been in danger.

Hogan can now make his own Star Citizen game, holy toledo @ that $$$

Oh please. They're one of the very, very few gaming outlets with journalists worth a damn.

Every once in a while yes, there is a good investigative article but its mostly crap. Schreier and Totilo will land on their feet. I still follow their twitter account and mostly the articles are gossip or clickbait.

Then you haven't been paying attenting to Kotaku at all the past year

I haven't. I only visit GAF anymore. If there is an important article coming from Kotaku GAF finds it. I don't have time to sift through all their crap.

I never got the hate for Gawker and specifically Kotaku. Good people work there and I would hate for them to lose their jobs.

Why not read the thread. The thread in which there is a quote of a major gawker editor stating he would post a sex tape of a celebrity if they were 5 years old.

I'm not sure many people at Kotaku were actively involved with the shady shit that Gawker was doing.

A site you have absolutely no obligation to read whatsoever? A site with some incredibly informative articles for an audience that borderline hates learning about the nitty gritty of game's development or how projects can go wrong.

Christ, is it really that simple?

Those people are abhorrent.
Yes it's that simple, they're social rejects.

Holy shit, that's a lot of money!

I hope not. Kotaku is that weird uncle that say something funny at the meal

I don't browse Kotaku either but gaf always ends up collecting the best of their work anyway and many of their articles have made very worthwhile threads here.

Christ, is it really that simple?

Those people are abhorrent.

They are the embodiment of "the good ol' days" mentality for games. They're short-sighted scum and nothing else.

I'm not sure many people at Kotaku were actively involved with the shady shit that Gawker was doing.

They weren't, but by being part of that brand, if the brand is shady and gets shot for it..well, those linked in the same "body" take the same "wounds" so to speak.

Nobody here is calling Kotaku a bunch of shysters. It's that if Gawker is getting buried, Kotaku will be dragged with them. That's just what it is: not good, not bad, but what it is.

Prayers for Mr. Klepek and Mr. Schreier. Hope they can get taken care of (I mean that in a good way).
Holy shit those people on twitter are sad assholes.
OMG, sometimes I wish I was like... a plant or something. I'd never witness such shittiness if I were, say... a palm tree.
The Conde Nast CFO story they ran, was one of the most disgusting pieces of "journalism" I've ever seen.
Yeah, that was some disgusting, atrocious shit that they did.

The double standard of the shit they pulled with Hogan as opposed to the feign outrage about Jennifer Lawrence just months earlier. Yeah, they deserve this. Too bad if some good people go down the drain, but Gawker has always been trash and them shutting down is a net positive.

I'm happy that the Hulk won the case.

Sucks for the people that work there, but i'm not gonna pretend that i'm not excited to see a site i loath possibly disappear.

Well, THAT is a shitty thing to say.

In my view as I've stated above, Kotaku going under in this would be sad collateral damage, but damage I am willing to accept if it means putting a stop to Gawker's disgusting methods that curtail people's personal privacy.

But I actually don't think this will end Kotaku- they'll just get sold off if Gawker does indeed go bankrupt.

Why not read the thread. The thread in which there is a quote of a major gawker editor stating he would post a sex tape of a celebrity if they were 5 years old.

Shit happens in journalism. Hell I was disappointed in Gawker when I outed that CEO a few months back. But still good people worked there and actively cheering for their demise (especially for a gaming site that had nothing to do with it) is a rather childish way of thinking.

As much as people don't want to admit it, Gawker does actually have a lot of incredibly talented journalists who pump out some good writing. It's very sad and depressing that many of them could lose their jobs because there was a whole other side of the coin to their business that profited off of some pretty unsavory things.

I just hope that the "good" ones make it, you know?
