Is my Xbox dying?

I'm having a bit of trouble with my Xbox (I'm assuming it's the disc drive in particular) at the moment, in that the drive makes a kind of 'whirring' sound every other second, which lasts for roughly a second before quietening back down and starting up again a second later. Also, in the last four or five games of Halo 2 online the game has frozen for a good second before kicking back in, accompanied by the 'whirring' sound I've mentioned. Finally, and it's what caused me to turn off my Xbox and come here, the game froze up completely when I tried to jump into a Warthog.

Has anyone else had this 'whirring' crap before, and if so did it turn out to be serious? And for anyone else who has had to get their drive worked on, roughly how much did it cost (I'm in Australia, so if you could give me the currency so I can get a guesstimate with the conversion)? I've got a Thomson drive in my Xbox if it makes any difference (and I'm sure it does given the Thomson's reputation )

Have you tried other discs? My experience is that a certain sort of damage on discs can cause the balance of the disc to be disturbed when spinning at a certain speed.
This is consistent with the issues you name.

next thing you'll problably get is dirty disc error. what you should is to get a dvd lens cleaner. that'll solve all your problems. did for me. my xbox has gone from behaving like a living corpse to looking a brand new console since the lens cleaning.

What do you expect Bitch. It's given you in one year what the PS2 manged in 4. A non-stop cavalcade of hits unmatched in the history of videogames....show some respect member and rejoice in the fact that your lucky enough to own an Xbox - think of the starving millions in Africa...do they know it''s the Xbox GOTYmas?.
