Xbox is considering buying studios again...

It's a waste of money.

Every TV since the mid 2010s has some sort of built in streaming or 'stream from mobile device' feature.

On top of that, Roku and Apple TV have taken up living rooms even more.
I wasn't talking about movies/TV streaming devices but game streaming/Cloud Gaming devices primarily. Sony won't allow it on the non Playstation branded hardware. And while Xbox doesn't need one, it's good for brand presence and marketing.

Buy the ones that were suppose to make

Timesplitters 4
Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart 2
Prototype 3
Dishonored 3
Twisted Metal 5
Carrier 2
Deep Fear 2
Martin Gothic 2
System Shock 3
Extermination
The Thing 2

MS likely wouldn't be allowed to buy it. Gabe isn't immortal, his son may be willing to sell. Only ones coming up with $50 billion are Saudis or maybe Nvidia.
I wonder if Gabe wouldn't sell at say a 100 billlion. Like he's got to have a limit at which point, he'll be like 'scrrew pc gaming, I just want unlimited money'.

The same money they spent on buying studios could have been used to equip existing studios with new mocap rooms, and hire better engineers to build more robust games.

If you want to be a game designer at Rockstar, you need to know some C++ programming, but if you want to be a game designer at Ubisoft you just need to watch Game Maker's Toolkit. Spend your money on better engineers and equipment, not on buying IPs.

I think this M&A comment is more likely to mean they're looking at AI game generating startups than game studios or publishers.

Entire Sony market Cap is $130 billion. So $200 billion should do it.

Mikami is already bought out last week, by Shift Up, who made Stellar Blade.

Valve will get bought out by the Saudis I bet.

MS bought SIE? When did that happen?
So he can leave the company and open a new one.

That article just took information that was already posted in the Matt and Asha statement. Why make a new thread?

Because almost no one wants to read that Co-Pilot generated corpo-speak drivel.

I couldn't even get three sentences in.

Yeah Microsoft would never be allowed to own Valve. That puts them directly in a threat for monopoly by owning the biggest store and biggest OS. Even a close collaboration would probably be enough for trial. But I don't know the legal stuff so take that with a boatload of salt. I guess it's possible that it would be okay if nobody sell anything with Windows or Microsoft Store or Steam preinstalled. Blank slate PCs only. But idk. Even Valve alone is close enough to have extra eyes on them because they own 75% of the PC storefront market, if Epic and GOG closed shop Gabe might suddenly sit in a trial.

If the plan is to recoup 80 billion in m&a I failed to see a point of more m&a on any scale.

At this point it's easier and healthier to wait for some real steps and not vague Copilot-style proclamations.

Buying publishers was the start of this whole mess, especially Activision-Blizzard. I thought buying Bethesda, was crazy, already.

They had an opportunity for some positive PR from saving Nagoshi's studio instead of letting his game get cancelled. In reality they're probably going to look for another billion dollar acquisition that won't be a good return of investment.

Honestly think UBISOFT would be a great pickup for them if they want to go this route again. They are in trouble and rather Microsoft get them instead of tencent.

Build a new studio full of woke shit developers fired cause of AI bubble, promise awesome games and sales, sell it to Microsoft.
Make profit

It would be really weird if game designers at R* didn't have a high-level scripting language at their disposal to design missions, (world) events, do balancing and all the other stuff that game designers do. They usually don't touch engine internals nor are even aware of how the engine they work with actually works. Nor should they have to know it, that's the responsibility of the engine programmers.

Serious question: Do these MS execs have a fixed set of clothes, maybe multiple identical ones, always ready to be put on sitting on some shelf in the office, you know like Superman changes into his pyjamas in telephone cells? They're always wearing the exact same things.

Ubi makes some kickass games. Especially when its not AC or one of their tired properties. (Avatar FOP, POP TLC etc.)

Bro, I wasn't sharing an opinion. I shipped a dozen games in the past decades.

R* doesn't have a design opening at the moment, but here's an old one I dug up real quick:

Required skill is strong C# programming. No high-level scripting nonsense. R* need the code to be fast, they don't need a script kiddie "ideas guy".

Go back to your Unreal Blueprints 🙄

Fuck this company, I'm never gonna say it enough. Oh and fuck all their cheerleaders too.
Haven't checked the thread.

But hopefully no one actually wants this?!

Activision has been a disaster, where is the revival of neglected, but beloved, IP that people were drooling over the possibilities for.

Well I don't know if it's just trolling but people want them to acquire SIE and steam...

I actually program in C++ when I have to use Unreal (which isn't a lot, admittedly. Only for projects that use VR in some way. Most of my work is spent on renderers and stuff that we have written from scratch). I don't know why you seem to feel personally attacked. My apologies if that is the case. But my argument still stands that game designers usually don't work with languages like C++ (and shouldn't have to). There are better languages and tools available because they have different problems to solve for which C++ is usually not the right tool.

C# is a better tool for this, yes. But that's quite the different thing to C++, imho.

It took Microslop 10 years and billions of dollar to atleast come to the realization they do piss poor job at making studios from ground-up.

We're good, you and I.

Regulatory bodies should be banning microsoft from buying any studios for a decade, they went on a massive shopping spree then fired half of them, and close many entirely.

I could see Microsoft lobbying the US government over the level of influence China has in gaming and creating a situation where an American company needs to take over from Tencent a la TikTok.

Ubisoft is French though, the American laws don't apply to it. They would apply to Epic, or Riot.

I've got a studio they can buy for the low, low cost of $30m
Act now and I'll throw in an additional studio for an extra $5m.
Fuck this company, I'm never gonna say it enough. Oh and fuck all their cheerleaders too.
Oh I wouldn't fuck with the cheer squad, you'll get turbo AIDS.

Until they get a handle on their own problems, like uh, how to manage game studios, buying more is just spreading the rot throughout the industry. No amount of burning through the reputation and brand value others created will ever make them a success.

So how short was the leash Spencer was on the last 18 months or so? Suddenly, Asha is getting breaks on showing the 30% profitability and the funds are flowing again. Phil went from the award winning hero to zero In a short period of time. Including with Xbox fans.
He was %100 pushed out imo.

My eyes are on the quarterly results, my gut tells me they will not make for pretty reading. The PR rollout has been furious ever since she was put in place.

You can't just buy From Software like you would some independent company, From is owned by Kadokawa once of the largest entertainment conglomerates in Japan. This is the equivalent of someone saying Sony should buy Rockstar while forgetting they are owned by Take Two.
Theres also the fact Japanese companies are protected by Japanese law and any purchase greater than 10% has to be signed off by the Japanese government. So fuck that guy, but if Xbox is going down this road again screw them, Playstation should buy Kadokawa, Capcom and Konami. Keep all the best games as Playstation exclusive. Sick to death of Xbox ruining everything 😒

Asha please work with what you have for now.
Sad Puss In Boots GIF

I know she will because dat big brain.

She will not do this yet, imho.

You will, unfortunately, find a lot of braindead sorts of comments whenever this type of news hits! The saying "those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it" is often lost when it comes to many in the gaming community. Just no self awareness at all. You'd have thought big purchases like Acti and the major negatives that came as a result taught people something, but alas, it's 2026 and here we are seeing the same sort of nonsense. They simply don't get it.
