Is Myst IV good?

I'm placing an order atm, and this game just popped up in front of me...

I loved Myst III, so is this one worth $30?

and how about Psychonauts?

EDIT:

DK: JB (with bongos) in the cart :)

I really enjoyed Myst III as well, and I thought IV was even better. Its hard though. Its so hard they give you the stratagy guide as a PDF on the game disc ;) But the puzzles were cool, the plot was good, and the graphics were great. I dont think you can go wrong.

Every Myst is good

Except Uru.

Get Psychonauts too so you can appease all the Tim Schafer fellatioids on the board

Question: I recall years back a coworker playing around with a 3D version of the original Myst. Was this an offical release or just some graphics card demo?

I got a free myst game when I bougt a set of sony dvd+r discs, didnt know it until a month later. Havent checked it out and have no idea if its the third of fourth in the series.

Myst IV is awesome, puzzles are more intuitive than Riven, but much harder at the same time, I never played Myst III, so I'm not sure how it compares to that though......hmmm, maybe I should pick up III one of these days, it looks great :)

Damn it. I might have to buy it now. :)

I was a huge fan of the original Myst, which I played on PSX...

Doesn't myst 4 come with 3, or was that just a limited time thing?

Myst 3 came in the case with 4 when I got it.

So, how many Myst games are there really, which are the best versions, and are they available in compilations, at all?

Thanks in advance! :)

I'll hit all the relevant releases for you:

Myst (Cyan)

The original, created by Rand and Robyn Miller. Masterpiece edition has better "graphics" and sound, as well as an integrated guide. Was remade in full 3D by Cyan as realMYST. The original game is really dated (it's 11 years old) but it still holds up today in my opinion. realMYST is worth seeking out if only as a novelty, because it's almost graphically identical to the renders in Myst. My biggest issue with it is its lack of free movement. It's very confining, almost feels as if you're on rails. It's all real-time, though, and destroys the interactivity of nearly all of the games in the series (aside from Uru, which plays similarly but with a bit more freedom).

Riven (Cyan)

The direct sequel, by Cyan. REALLY tough.

Myst III: Exile (Presto)

Not by Cyan but still worth playing. It's like Myst via Quicktime VR.

Uru: Ages Beyond Myst (Cyan)

The MMO Myst. Didn't take off, is no longer online. The game is still playable offline, though, and an expansion pack was released called The Path of the Shell. Uru: Complete Chronicles includes that and more. It's a bit flawed due to clunky mechanics, but the puzzles are fun and the graphics can be breathtaking. Fully 3D.

Myst IV Revelation (Ubisoft Montreal)

Probably the best in the series despite the lack of involvement by Cyan.

Myst V: End of Ages (Cyan, releasing Fall 2005)

Cyan's first real Myst since Riven and the supposed end of the series.

There have been countless compilations over the years but I think the best bet to play them all would be to get the Myst 10th Anniversary Collection DVD (which contains Myst: Masterpiece, Riven, and Exile), Myst IV, Uru Complete and finally V when it is released. realMYST is skippable, but is pretty neat nevertheless.

You can get them all (except realMYST) direct from Ubisoft here: http://store.ubi.com/category.jsp?category=MYST

Thanks for the post Metsallica. I got tired of waiting for these other fools to respond, so I went ahead, did my own research, and went shopping an hour or two ago.

I wound up getting:

Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Collection (Myst I Masterpiece, Myst II Riven, Myst III Exiles)
~$15 Amazon.com (brand new)
Myst IV Revelations DVD
~$20 Amazon.com (brand new)
Myst Uru - Complete Edition (includes both expansions)
~$14 Amazon.com (brand new)
RealMyst
~$50 Amazon Merchant (used but complete, amazing how rare and expensive this is)

I probably could have done better with some of these, but Ubi Soft's direct store is a total rip off, as you can tell from my prices. Can't wait to give 'em a spin!

Oh oh oh, I will. Last time I gave Myst a try was on the 3D0 (I think) when I was way too young to appreciate it. Never bothered with any of the sequels. I'm in the mood for some classic adventurin' and puzzlin'. Thanks!

Real Myst (3D remake of the original.)
Myst URU (and it's 2 expansions. Failed attempt at a MMO Myst title.)

I thought the MMO side of URU never got past beta stage - ie, the released version was always single player only.

Surprised they didn't go all the way with it, seems like there's a clear void for that type of game (non orcs/sci-fi MMO with a big name), which Sims Online certianly didn't fill...

Make sure you get the books (Atrus and Ti'ana at least -- D'ni isn't that good).

I did. I couldn't find the individually, so I got the rerelease paperback of all 3 books in one 1000 or so page volume. Forgot to mention 'em before. The Myst Reader, it's called, I believe.

Yeah, you're right, it didn't. The beta was fairly extensive, though. Ubisoft basically declared it "Not Economically Viable" before it ever had a chance to take off. Not enough nu-metal on the soundtrack, I guess.

Cyan still has that pesky "Worlds" in their name, though, so maybe they'll create a new one of the persistent online variety once they finish up Myst V (hopefully with a new publisher... or as a digital download!).

which is the one where you actually play your character in the 3rd person view? I saw a preview for that a while ago... looked pretty good.
I haven't booted up realMYST in 5 years or so, but I'm pretty sure it was strictly first person. In Uru, you could toggle between 1st and 3rd. The problem with the default 3rd person view was that Cyan somehow felt compelled to add HORRENDOUS platforming mechanics to the game.

Hmmm... That just got me thinking. My roommate's pal works at Ubi, and he's currently on an upcoming "big name MMO" - a game he couldn't talk about. I wonder...

Damn thats a lot of Myst... I hope you manage to keep your sanity. :) From my memory realMyst is actually better looking that Myst Masterpiece edition, but I can't seem to find any decent screen shots to confirm that... but IIRC Myst Masterpiece just took the old visiuals and rendered them in 24-bit colour.. they didnt actually re-draw the scenes or anything.

RealMyst also has a new age and epilogue, which I imagine Myst Masterpiece Edition does not.

But I hear that moving around in RealMyst is beyond clunky... Also, it apparently ran like HELL on computers around that time. I imagine it won't be a problem on my end however.

AFAIK, the Worlds thing was all a build-up to Mudpie/Parable/Uru, and they were so devastated by its stillbirth that they don't want to touch MMOs again.

I think online multiplayer Myst, much like online multiplayer Sims, was a terrible idea with the best of intentions, which they found out the hard way.

HORRENDOUS platforming mechanics

Course, that didn't help either.
