Is Nintendo's "hype machine" working?

I don't know about you guys, but I get on the boards everyday, look at the news for the evening and always wonder if there's going to be any new news about Revolution. When I see PS3 or Xenon news, I don't really care that much because generally it's generic. "Developer X says this about PS3's power." But any bit of Revolution news, since it's shrowded in mystery, is juicy and good news. Even though I'm a big skeptic of the system and am against Nintendo's recent "change the entire market against its will" strategy, Revolution and Nintendo's plans with it intrigue me immensly.

Is this intentional? Is this how Nintendo is builiding hype? Is it working?
 
Uh, no. If you want to see hype go see the Project: Reality/Ultra 64/N64 era, Revolution is like five months away from being unveiled and there's really no talk about it whatsoever.
 
This is Nintendo. They are the kings of confidentiality.

Always have been, always will be. It has nothing to do with hype.

Revolution news since I am curious what it really is. Generally PS3 (with PS2's massive userbase) is the most hyped of them all.

You know, I really think this camp thing could stick.

Well, I for one prefer shrouded secrecy over blind hype, so I don't mind Nintendo's approach. There are so many rumors surrounding PS3 and Xenon, it can get really tangled, but with Revolution, you have nothing to go on, which seems much more exciting to me.

If you were asking me, I would say that I am not part of any camp, but I do have a shack that is located a little too close to the Nintendo camp. ;)
 
Everything Nintendo talks about these days is a revolution or paradigm shift.

The jet pack in Super Mario Sunshine was so incredible that they couldn't show it to the public until E3 2002.

That's totally the slogan, I even drew a picture with that in it yesterday!

We searched the shack. It has a underground tunnel that emerges right inside the Nintendo teepee! *marks it down* It's a good camp. They have pie.

Ah yes, I saw that picture, very well done I must add.

On the topic of my shack, the tunnel helps me steal pie from the Nintendo camp seeing as how I am too cheap to buy my own. Shiggy's periodic banjo solos aren't bad either. Luckily you didn't find the other three tunnels. ;)
 
I would like to see the board after Revolution's unveiling.

If it's something that actually is revolutionary, the whole forum is gonna be in an uproar.

If not, there's gonna be a whole lot of :lol


But yeah, I'm always hoping to hear more about Revolution. And Xenon. PS3...we'll see.
 
They've painted themselves into a corner. If what they are working on is truly revolutionary, then they can't really talk about it much anyway. So everything is building up to a grand E3 unveiling. They may not have hype in the Sony sense, but what they will have leading uptil then is huge curiousity. Of course it could backfire spectacularly if people feel they haven't delivered.

The puzzling thing is if they do unveil it at E3, then they would be showing their hand (and therefore atleast some of features which make it revolutionary) over a year before it's expected release. Giving Sony and/or Microsoft ample time to steal their thunder.

Unless it really isn't a conventional console at all, and Sony/Microsoft couldn't copy it because it just isn't compatible with what they are doing with Xbox2/PS3.

Gonna be an interesting E3 (and GAF) this year! :D

I'm not really interested. I definately won't be getting it at launch. But even if Ninty does have something special underneath the hood will developers and consumers bite? I hope they do come out with something good. I'm just kinda not itching to get my paws on it. :/
 
Yeah you have to wonder exactly what Nintendo will show at E3 2005.

If the system *really* is revolutionary (not analog click buttons or water jet packs), then do they show the system at E3 2005? It may open the door for Sony/MS to copy or react accordingly, unless of course its something so crazy and out there that Sony/MS just don't bother.

If they show graphics tech demos it may be seen as underwhelming, since they've made all this fuss about being revolutionary.
 
News about Revolution intrigues me more because Nintendo Execs are making a big deal how different it will be from what our concept of a console is. If this "Revolution" doesn't turn out to be a gimmick (ie. two screens). If the Revolution truly changes the way we play videogames I'll be the first one in line to buy one.
 
the ds is still being discussed as if it's a coherent innovation rather than a jury-rigged oddity with embarassing software. and even in light of the ds, observers use the codename of their next console unironically, and will likely continue to do so for some time after its disappointing debut. so i think nintendo has been successful in defining their own image, if not in actually generating as much interest as sony or microsoft.
 
I just want the hardware innovations to be driven by whatever games they have in development, not the other way round.

With GBA-connectivity and DS they seem to have come up with the concepts first and then thought about how to write games round them afterwards. Whereas the design of the N64 was very much driven by Mario64.

It's no good proclaiming something as revolutionary if they don't show us a damn good example of why. Again, this will be a problem at E3 if the release is so far away. Tech-demos may be fine for Xbox2/PS3, but Nintendo have to show how the actual gameplay experience will be different on their machine.

You do not know how much I was smiling when I saw my freaking name on that shack.

I really must say though that you have quite a bit of talent. I tried to draw a wrench for a torque assignment in Physics and it came out looking like absolute garbage. It was crushing. :lol

Aww. Well, try try again! Also, you can make things look totally awesome in photoshop if you have trouble drawing.

You know I do. :)

Photoshop is great, and I love playing around with it, but it's the freehand stuff that slaps me in the face. I sketch sometimes when I am bored in class, and it's absolutely terrible, but it helps pass the time. Well, I guess from now on, when I sketch someting in class, I will think to myself "Hell, I'm no Amir." :lol

Well, I have my own problems. For instance, I'm absolutely terrible at coloring things so I always just leave my stuff in black/white.

IMHO, it looks much, much better that way. It gives it it's own style, and seems much more sophisticated that way.

Seriously, we don't know ANYTHING about the Revolution. How we can we be overly excited or apathetic about it's release? Come E3, however, we'll know whether we like it or not.
