Is Paste magazine any good?

I noticed Paste at a local B&N last month and flipped through it out of interest, and the magazine seemed suprrisingly solid. As far as music magazines go, it did cover a lot of bands and artists that I tend to listen to, it has a DVD which could be of some use for sampling, and the articles seem pretty well written. Besides, they had Ben Folds on the cover last month and Billy Corgan on the cover this month -- and ironically enough, an interview with Malkumus/Pavement is featured in that same issue. Does anyone subscribe to it who has read a few issues to weigh in on it?

Yeah, they're all right. Don't be surprised to see contributions from Pitchfork editors, though.

Scott Plagneneneandhadofef or Rob Mitchum (can't remember) wrote that Corgan feature. Don't get too excited, Diablos. Evil Pitchfork demons wrote about Corgan, and they don't have ears or taste.

That's a great photo of Ben. Totally found a new avatar.

It's pretty good, yes. Though I happen to prefer to following:

Magnet
Filter
The Wire
Uncut
Mojo

and some others I can't remember.

I have no idea what those magazines are, can you offer a quick synopsis by chance? Just curious as to what their specialty or focus is, if they have one in particular.

All of them are 'rock' oriented. The Wire tends to the more 'avant-garde,' freeform jazz sort of stuff, whereas Magnet are total indie fucks. Filter is very similar to PASTE. Uncut and Mojo are really greta British mags that focus primarily on rock and 'pop' (more in the Björk sense than in the Rachel Stevens/Jessica Simpson sense).. they also come with amazing free compilations that always have stuff I've never heard... and they have excellent "Special Issues" every month.. a few months ago they had a 150 page issue dedicated to David Bowie (!!!) and I think currently they have a post-punk retrospective (with a mix CD) that has a big section dedicated to Ian Curtis.

And yeah Under the Radar is good stuff as well.

The Big Takeover is quite good too. It's quarterly, but the issues are pretty packed when they do come out. 5 bucks makes it a steal.

Huh? I already read the article. Keep stroking your ego, bell. It's getting old... I'm sick and tired of you targeting me for no fucking reason whatsoever.

I like Paste. I buy it for the CD, and then end up reading the magazine as well. I don't have a lot of good sources to sample new music in Houston, TX, so it's one of my few sources.

Yeah, tell me about it. I can barely find a decent CD store in Houston. Hell, I can't find much of anything decent in Houston.
