Is Sega Rally 3 a no show?

I realize there is sometime before E3 is over, but even in Sega's press release they make no mention of the game. Ya think it was moved to another platform? This game was also pimped as a release to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the original game, now it looks like that may be all for nothing. Whats the deal here, does anyone have any info on this game?

It's still up at www.segarally.com though if you ask me they should've just waited for the new systems (as well as the new arcade board) to make this game. Frankly I hope that's what they're doing...it was due out in Japan a few months ago, and there hasn't been much new info regarding the game.

I wonder if SOA's just quitely backing out on Sega Rally 2005... similar to Project Altered Beast. Do I detect a hint of SCEA Product Approval in the air?

It's not like there's been an announcement in Japan since TGS either though. Maybe (hopefully) it's canned.

I guess that Sega Rally 3 might probably come from that new "Racing Studio" that Sega Europe had set up in teh UK to work on next-gen versions of Sega Rally and Craxy Taxi.

SEGA assembling next-gen Racing Studio in UK( News )

by Tom Bramwell
About this game

14/02/2005 10:10

SEGA is constructing a new UK development studio to focus on next-generation racing titles based on some of the publisher's most successful IP, including Crazy Taxi and SEGA Rally, according to a report in UK trade mag MCV.

"There was an opportunity for us to capitalise on the potential [of our IP] by working with the very best people in the industry to move these franchises onto next-gen technology," head of senior product development Guy Wilday commented.

"The studio will concentrate on innovative new iterations of existing franchises and on the development of new game IP, not ports of existing franchises," he added. A job advert for the new "Racing Studio" indicated that successful applicants will be working on titles including SEGA Rally - a seemingly unrelated PlayStation 2 version of which is currently under way in Japan - and Crazy Taxi.

SEGA is currently scouting locations for premises and building a core team. "Locating the studio in the centre of the country is the ideal positioning to attract the best development talent from both studios in the south and north of England," Wilday noted.

SEGA of Europe said it had nothing to add to the report carried by MCV.

SEGA RALLY AND CRAZY TAXI TO COLLECT MORE FARES

New specialist Sega studio to develop next-gen racers

15:53 Sega is gearing up for next-gen versions of some of the company's most beloved racing titles.

A report on trade publication MCV's website reveals that the European arm of Sega is currently setting-up a dedicated 'Racing Studio' in the centre of the UK, with the new studio focusing solely on next-gen product based on existing Sega franchises.

What are the titles being bandied about? It looks like further incarnations of Sega Rally and Crazy Taxi are definitely on the cards with the company already mentioning both titles in job ads to lure potential employees to the new studio.

Sega of Europe has already proven its skills in the racing sector with the successful Xbox port of OutRun 2 by the Sheffield-based developer Sumo Digital.

Perhaps most interestingly, if Sega of Japan is farming sequels to some of its biggest franchises to Europe, what could Sega's Japanese development teams be working on?

Like Bob Marley said: only time will tell.

Nope, it confirmed to be developed in Japan by Sega AM Racing Games R&D Dept (which is the former Sega Rosso). It's one of the few consumer only products coming out of the new Sega AM division actually (the others being Beetle Mushi King GBA and new PS2 baseball/soccer sims).

edit-Ack, I meant Sega Rally 2005. I sort of doubt Sega Rally 3 exists at this stage.

yeah, Sega Rally 2005 is being made in Japan by Sega Japan, their AM Racing Department.

but another Sega Rally, for-next gen systems, is or will be made in the UK by the "Racing Studio". I dunno if that can be concidered Sega Rally 3 or not.

on that note, with certain words belonging to fucking EA, I hope either one of those Sega studios are working on
"Sega Stockcar Racing USA" as well as porting over "Sega Stockcar Racing USA 2" ;)

nice, was it also a no-show at E3?

of course. cause it is less of a product at this time than Sega Rally 2005. because it seems that the UK Racing Studio was only in the process of getting people together to make these new games.

According to SEGA Europe, Sega Rally 2005 is still coming on PlayStation 2 but the game will not be released before 2006 in Europe.

I don't believe 2K5 was at the show.

I'm excited about the Sega racing studio...I'm hoping for an American Le Mans racing simulation, as that's my second favourite racing series after the WRC. Melbourne House had started a similiar title for XBox, but wound up canceling it.

Yeah, same guys...hell with any luck maybe Melbourne House will get back to work on that game, since they can't do F1 anymore.

Wasnt their F1 game on the PS2 forgetable?...at least as far as physics go? Graphics were nice.

Heh, I don't know...I like it, but the competition isn't exactly great. EA's F1 2002 for PS2 was just wretched in comparison. Haven't been able to play Sony's latest offerings, thanks to the idiotic SCEA/EE cold war.

Well, when the people in SCEA approval reject great games for the most idiotic reasons imaginable you're bound to piss off someone.

Sega won't outsource a new installment of SR to a non-Japanese developer, in-house or not. That European studio will probably port Crazy Taxi and Sega Rally to PSP or something like that.

They'd better not outsource something likea brand new Sega Rally to a Western company. Then even I would start calling their demise.

They've already got Sumo Digital for stuff like that.

At least its not Genki or Tantalus
With respect, Tantalus was given a near-impossible timeframe to port House of the Dead to Saturn, thus it ended up a trainwreck (although far better than I would have imagined given how long they had). Manx TT was done nicely, small game but the arcade game was even smaller.

All they need to do is add some engrish to rallisport 3 and add some "insert coin" text at the bottom of the screen, and there you have Sega Rally 3.

Manx TT was an excellent conversion. Tantalus is pretty underrated imo, their Top Gear Rally for GBA is pretty amazing too.

Genki's fanatstic too when given the proper time and resources. Hell, they're one of the best arcade racing developers left in Japan (along with Namco's RR/Moto GP team, Taito's Battle Gear team and various Sega teams)

Does anyone have more info on Tantalus? I had assumed Manx TT for the Saturn was done by the same team that handled the Sega Rally and Sega Touring Car conversions.

The "OMG EAST OWNS THE WEST!!!11" mentality has been dead for a few years now. Overall Europe has always been top dog for racing games.

That said, I'd prefer to see Kenji Sasaki direct and produce any arcade installments of Sega Rally. But I could see the European outfit doing a home version that's a little closer to the Colin McRae games in terms of the number of stages and their design.

I could see the Japan team doing an arcade version while the European team does the hom version in the same vein as Outrun2. I would prefer the core game to stay with people who worked on it original, not in an 'it must stay in Japan way', I mean I wouldn't want it to be developed by Genki, or god-forbid Dimps or Tose, they've desecrated enough Sega franchise to last a life time (I realise that they may not be Japanese, I'm pretty sure Tose isn't, but it's still the general East vs West thing).

Hopefully, this lack of info about Sega Rally 2005 (which until it's confirmed otherwise is what I take the rumours of Sega Rally 3 to have been referring to) means either that they are giving serious development after a) an underwhelming TGS showing and b) first saying there would be online play, then saying no to online. Or, ideally, they've realised that it'd be difficult trying to relaunch the franchise this late into the current gen, have put the work on SR2005, towards Sega Rally 3 on the new arcade board, with an eye to porting it to next-gen consoles early in the next-gen.

It plays everything like sega rally. Its an arcade rally game, you dont honestly thing sega will keep their simplistic dreamcast physics model do you ?

No, it doesn't play anything like Sega Rally. Go back and play SR or SR2 and then start playing Rallisport. They're completely different.

So what? So is Top Gear Rally, and it doesn't play like Sega Rally. Just because a game is in the same racing genre doesn't mean they play alike.

Ryudo said:

Considering that's Sega Rally, i'd certainly hope they wouldn't change things that drastically.

I dont agree with you, rallisport is the evolution of sega rally.
