The Lunch Legend

GAF's Nicest Lunch Thief and Nosiest Dildo Archeologist
So, I finally got Sonic the Hedgehog for Xbox 360 from my cousin Dolphino. I've always wanted to play this game, as I've wanted to complete as many Sonic games as possible and because I've wanted to see how bad it really was. I've seen gameplay videos and I've read many reviews about the game, so I went into Sonic 2006 thinking it was going to be unplayable.

Surprisingly, I've actually had a lot of fun with this game, possibly ranking it up as one of my favorite Sonic games. I had little trouble in parts where others kept failing and I only died 4 times, 2 times from miss judging a jump, 1 from a glitch and 1 from being too cocky and running into enemy fire without any any rings (I've only finished 50% of Sonic's story).

So, I'm wondering, is this game really that bad? Yes, it has quite a silly story and the load times are a bit long but the gameplay (I found) wasn't as bad as everyone has made it seem to be. Is this game just underrated due to every reviewer jumping on the bandwagon?

It's awful and unfinished...

But I love it anyway. I dig the more realistic art style and darker tone. And I love how epic they were trying to make the game.

The main issue was that there are frequent bugs that straight up kill you, and most scripted events do not function as intended.

I only played one or two hours back in the day and my biggest complain were the loading times, they took like forever. In a complete run, you could be watching 1-2 hours of loading screens. I mean, they are not nearly as long as Soldier of Fortune on Dreamcast, the game with the longest loading times ever in a disc based system, but they're pretty damn long.

Design was sometimes completely awful, especially with those semi-realistic human models. But gameplay wise I'd say it was ok. It's certainly playable since there are some longplays out there.

It's hard to blame this game when there are things like Sonic Jam on Gamecom, Sonic The Hedgehog on Game Boy Advance or Sonic Boom on Wii U. Those are next level crap.

It was released in an unfinished state and has some weird story decisions but... It has a solid foundation. Try project 06 on PC, they polished it up real nice.

I never finished it, but I always felt that while it's obviously not a great game, it's not exactly terrible either. Just really, really stupid.

I dont think I REALLY ever play a Sonic game.

Every single one I pick up the controller to, I go this is the shit these Sonic fans hype up? Every single one. From 2D to Racing.

To put it briefly:

IT'S NO USE

IT'S NO USE

IT'S NO USE

IT'S NO USE

(You'll understand when you get there...)

Story is interesting but gameplay sucks ass.

It was my first game on the X360 so i have very found memories of it.

I don't know.

I played it once, and it was the demo from XBL. That was pretty good. But I read the finished version was a worse build, and a rather bad game overall with unbearable load times. This is why I never bought it.

I did beat Unleashed and Generations this year though. And I would probably try 2006 if it was upgraded as well, rather than delisted.

Yes and I say that as someone who enjoyed most Sonic games. I think it's the worst one I can think of outside of the spin-offs. But I didn't play Sonic Boom.

Rumor is MS themselves massively cleaned up the code for the XBL demo. But Sega was too offended to implement the fixes for launch.

The Lunch Legend The Lunch Legend Check out this fanmade remake, no story, but all Sonic and Shadow levels are in.

It's among the most amazing fan projects I've ever seen.

Yes, it was pretty damn terrible.
Unfinished crap, terrible story/acting, hedgehog vangloried as master race, bad gameplay/plataforming and the amount of edgy cheesiness of this game made it look like a humorist game than something to be taken seriously.
I think the only redeem factor of this game is the soundtrack.

From a pure gameplay perspective, and despite its shortcomings, the game is actually very fun.

Best soundtrack from any 3D Sonic game by far as well.

Game and story were both terrible.
Graphics was pretty great though.

But the bugs though. Yikes.
I never got past the battle against Silver.

I never understood why they didn't try fixing it with patches. Does anyone know the reason?

It's a game with lot of potential, destroyed by incompetence and idiotic choices.

Still, I love it as a guilty pleasure and it's still better than Rise of Lyric

I do think the game is very bad. Apart from the soundtrack, everything was unfinished. The story was probably in its first draft, they left shitty dub retakes on the game, the many glitches and so on.

But there are good things in the game that are always ignored. Shadow's character was amazing the game, far from the "Cell saga Vegeta" clone that he was in his title game and that he is currently. Team dark, overall, had good writing.

The level design was great. Fairly open sections that encourage exploration. Project 06 shows that when the game is actually finished, it can be pretty enjoyable.

Here, ill make it simple for anyone out there asking "is *insert sonic game here* really that bad?"

If it's a sonic game that released after the Sega Genesis era, it's bad.

The worst thing about sonic 06 is how it's used to criticize the series overall. With people saying nonsensical garbage about "how the game encourages Bestiality".

And also, everything even remotely similar to sonic 06 brings up the comparison, regardless of how much of a reach it is. "Oh, the game teaser has a forest, lol it's going to be another 06". "Multiple characters? Lol here comes 06 again". "Serious story in Sonic? Lol it's a blue hedgehog, take your necrobestiality shit away from me".

There's always someone that has to throw this opinion whenever the topic arises, regardless of how nonsensical it is.

The adventure games were extremely well received back in the day, regardless of the "how it aged" discussion. Generations is amazing and was praised by fans and casual gamers. The day stages of sonic unleashed also carry the same quality that generations had.

Even if you want to say that the franchise only works in 2d, which is not true, there are 2D games after the genesis era, including Sonic Mania.

If you don't like the games, that's fine. But stop saying the games are bad as if that's an objective fact.

Unfinished is an important part of it. There's actually a fan effort to remake/finish the game and it goes a long way to proving there WAS something there they just wasted it.

My point exactly. The fan project shows that there was a lot of potential in the game, especially in regards to level design. It's a shame they couldn't wait a year or 2, and it's even worse considering they butchered the team just for a poor attempt at a Wii release.

As a huge fan of the game in terms of it's goals, I've been following that project for 5 years.

unfortunately, FPS tanks on my POS laptop especially kingdom valley. I'm too lazy to upgrade :/

Anyone who thinks 06 is good doesn't deserve to live with real humans. Go wander into the woods and make do by yourself.
Try adding to the discussion instead of posting irrelevant garbage. The thread isn't even about it being good, it's about it being "that bad".

To be honest the games barely work in 2d, in my opinion

Then you don't enjoy that sort of game. That's fine. A lot of people do, and the games don't have objective flaws in them as 06 does (technical aspects).

Well, actually sonic 1 does have some levels in which it's basically impossible to keep up the momentum, so some criticism is important there. Something I'd say they learned, considering that the other games focused on the "green hill level design.".

I remember i bought it during the horrible PS3 games drought. OOPS!!!! I remember i kept clipping and falling through the map and dying!!!

As someone who loves Sonic and has played it, I can confirm it is pretty bad. But had a lot of fun playing the Sonic levels, especially Wave Ocean, Kingdom Valley and Crisis City.

I liked the game yeah... unfortunately the loading times are very, very, very bad....the worst I've seen.

yes, it is pretty bad. Outside of the loading times and cringe story it has several other flaws:
- hub world is crap
- it's full of bugs and glitches
- quality of the level design is very mixed
- controls are worse than in SA2
- wonky hit detection
- graphics look kinda meh. there are some good looking aspects, but generally it is underwhelming. Sonic and the Secret Rings was more impressive despite being a Wii game.

the soundtrack is pretty good though.

it took Sonic P-06 to bring out the few good things about the game.
