Is there an AOL instant messager-lite?

what do you mean?

There's a thin-client (web-based) version of AIM called AIM express.

There's a couple open-source versions of AIM out there, the most prominent being GAIM.

There's a bunch of third-party apps that connect to AIM as well as other messenging programs (ICQ / MSN / etc), the most prominent being Trillian.

There are apps that strip out all the annoying ads from AIM, such as DeadAIM.

You need to be more specific.

I'm essentially, looking for a lite version of AIM that has all of it's essential features (like file sharing), but without the ads and spyware.

aimexpress doesn't do this, unfortunately.

get DeadAIM. It strips out the ads and spyware. Of course, it's not free, but it used to be readily available on file-sharing networks ...

Yeah, DeadAIM + AIM = AIM Lite. It only costs like five bucks to register and is well worth it. Removes all the ads and adds some neat features.

Middleman looks like a great, free add-on. Thanks, retardboy.

Edit: Wait, I need to install one of their supported version of AIM? Oh cries of the lazy...

tabbed IM windows > Middleman.

Go with DeadAIM if that's what you're into. Just go to oldversion.com and get the last version of deadaim, and the highest version of AIM they have there that'll work with it.
