Is this a good time to buy a refurb last-gen MacBook Pro from Apple?

I'm unfamiliar with how the Apple Store works with refurb pricing but I'm eyeing this one for $1349...should I expect further price drops or do those happen very rarely?

200GB hard drive
8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

$1349 for a last gen refurb?? Jesus Mac prices are a joke.
They keep their resale value because they don't seem to turn to shit as quickly as PCs do. You can still run the latest version of OS X pretty well on a 6 year old G4.

You probably believe every part of that BS, don't you?

Mac resale value has nothing to do with quality of the hardware or how well it runs the latest OS. It has mostly to do with the collective delusion of the Mac marketplace.

I can still get good money for my first gen MacBook. I believe it.

No matter how you spin apple and there macs, there a rip off. Period.

Keep telling yourself that.

To the OP: Refurb prices rarely drop (if and when they do, the selection of hardware usually drops along with it). If that's what you want, go for it.

Well for price = what you get, they are grossly overpriced.

And for computers and laptops, it doesn't really get complicated determining if something is overpriced or not :lol. Look at the parts and look at the price.

Thanks, sounds like I'll go for it.

I don't understand why people feel the need to jump in and say that Apple's are overpriced, a rip off etc. If I want an Apple laptop for it's operating system, asthetic value and power, then why do you feel the need to claim that it's a rip-off? Are these people just upset that they can't afford an Apple?

Also with the 3-year Apple care, how long do I have after purchasing my refurb MBP to decide whether or not I want the 3-year care? I've heard it's a must but I may wait to see if I can get it for cheaper on eBay.

Because it's still overpriced. Period. You wanting one doesn't change that fact.

Can't afford an Apple? That's the best you can do? It doesn't matter if you make more money than other posters here if you're dropping $1350 for a LAST GENERATION REFURBISHED laptop.

Misdirected anger mostly. Which reminds me...

FunkyMunkey: Take it elsewhere. No one cares.

IIRC, I believe it's the same policy as it is for new hardware purchases, so you should have up to 1-year to purchase AppleCare if you want it, but I'd have to double-check that.

Good design + os x > the cost of parts

Pretty much. They're either really pissed that people are using a different operating system than them (which somehow makes the Mac users the sheep?), or they're really pissed that they can't afford it, which is why you'll never see anyone get angry and troll a thread for some $3000 Compaq or some shit, because no one cares about Compaq.

Overpriced and expensive are not the same thing.

Let's also chill with the "last gen" talk like these computers are years old. They came out in February 2008, and up to a month ago, people were buying them for $1999. $1350 is rather fair.

How the fuck did you manage to mess up both their and they're in one sentence?

I have a friend who is an editor, and she has an office full of G3s plugging away at Final Cut PRO and AVID, and they run nicely too.

But I suppose a Mac thread is incomplete without the usual Windows aficiandos price bitching, just like how a Windows virus thread is incomplete without someone saying "get a mac".

Is 2.4ghz that much slower than the 2.5ghz? Is it worth $150 more for someone like me?

I'd be using this a decent amount for iPhoto, a little bit of iMovie and a lot for web surfing, iTunes and normal day-to-day stuff

They do make very stable hardware platform for the intended content creation software.

I had a G4 tower running non stop since 911. I don't remember ever had any hardware related problem besides the over priced and shitty keyboard/mouse that didn't last. I have complete confidence in Mac towers.

Early this year I had to canniblized it because I couldn't come up with one thing for it to do. It consumes too much power for an iTunes only machine.

Honestly, part of the whole appeal of an Apple platform is the whole vertical integration thing they do. Your options for things like accessories and such are limited, but everything that does work generally works perfectly and seamlessly. Having to always stay on top of OS and firmware updates and such by going with a Hackintosh seems to completely defeat the purpose of owning a Mac in the first place. Stick with Windows and/or Ubuntu in that instance.

2.4 is fine man. I'm running Maya (modeling/animation program), steam + crosover, itunes and firefox (usually at the same time) regularly for the past year on my MBP and I have not had any issues whatsoever.

I saw that Amazon deal but I just bought the refurb through Apple's online store.

Feel more comfortable buying directly from Apple and knowing that it's been fully tested and is good to go.
