Is this the best bang I can get for my buck (at $930)? You got a better suggestion?

...talking laptops here.

I'll leave out the manufacturer's name because I feel it will just muddy the discussion (even though I'm sure some of you will know right off the bat who it is). That said, I'm no expert, but this seems like a great deal to me. Am I wrong in believing this? I looked at similarly priced Ultra-Books, but they just lack too many standard functions/features for me.

I'd love an SSD, but it ain't happening at the price point without gutting the laptop. So I'll have to live with a standard HDD (first world problems, right?).

Anyway, specs:

(Sandy Bridge) Core i5-2450M (2.50 GHz; up to 3.10 GHz via Turbo Boost 2.0)

15.6" Multi-Touch HD (1366x768) Truelife WLED (w/ Skype-Certified 2.0MP HD Webcam)

Windows 7 Home Premium (w/ recovery DVD)

8GB DDR3 1333MHz

Backlit Keyboard

NVIDIA/GeForce GT 525M 1GB w/ Optimus

1TB SATA HDD (5400 RPM)

10/100/1000 Ethernet

8X Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive

JBL 2.1 Speakers with Waves Maxx Audio 3

Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 Wi-Fi (dual channel)

Bluetooth 3.0

9 Cell (90 WHr) Battery

Free Shipping

So, is that a good deal? No? Can you point me in the right direction, or better yet, point me to something specific? I can do without "why don't you check out such and such", though I do appreciate the effort. I'll assume this is as much computer as can get for this money unless proven otherwise.

Thanks for the help.

Skype is "certifying" webcams these days? Lololol stop the world I believe this is my stop.

I think the info sheet said something like this was the first laptop to have a webcam certified to run Skype at Skype's specifications. ie - It won't look like shit like most laptop webcams.

Whatever though, that's the last thing I care about from the specs listed.

What do you think about the rest?

That HD sounds like total ass.

SSD is the most important upgrade these days unless you want to play games on it. Otherwise just get best ultra book in that price range.

Thanks for the help.

Looks like a Dell XPS, anyways look into a higher resolution screen. Go into Best Buy and look at the difference if you have to.

Is it an Alienware?

Edit: Dell XPS. Doesnt seem to have an option for a higher-res screen

Was a bit of a pain to find a way to upgrade the screen and address the HDD, but I was able to make the following changes:

Added:

17.3" FHD (1080p) with 2.0MP HD Webcam

1TB (500GB 7200 HDD x 2)

Removed:

Backlit Keyboard

$1,053

So, for an additional $123, I can upgrade to a 17" 1080p screen (that would be so very nice) and go with dual 500GB HDDs (7200rpm) over the single (and slower) 1TB HDD (5400rpm). I lose the backlit keyboard, which isn't a huge deal but will be missed at night as I do not type by touch alone.

That puts me over the magic $1,000 price point which makes me feel as though I am no longer getting a good deal.

Grrr. Decisions.

Knowledge is power, guard it well
Every 15.6" 1366x768 LCD in the laptop market is objectively a piece of shit. You do not want one of them.

This Dell 15z is the better buy, because you get a thinner, lighter machine, and it has a 1080p screen.

Very decent. Looks like a good buy.

So it's an XPS 17 then? Would you mind not being coy so you can get real help.
