Is Xbox Live Co-Op enough to get you to spring for Doom 3?

Think Bungie is wondering how Vicarious managed it? I know many think the PC version was a bit of a dissapointment but it sounds like the Xbox version is shaping up nicely.

DOOM 3 set a graphical benchmark for PCs, while continuing the most famous first-person shooter series of all time. A console version was announced not long after its release, but anyone with a drop of pessimism in their body doubted it would do justice to the epic game. From the look of the closed-doors CES demo we received from Microsoft, you're going to be eating your words like zombies munch flesh.


The powers-that-be are extremely insistent that DOOM 3 on Xbox is not a port. Their aversion to this moniker isn't for the obvious reason. In fact, it's because the game features more modes along with tweaks to existing elements of the PC game. Strange but true, loyal reader. For one, the Xbox version will feature co-op via Xbox Live. That's a feature even the beloved Halo 2 omitted from its finished product. Because of the differences two human players cause to the story elements and cutscenes, new dialogue was recorded and missions were altered to make more sense. Compare this to many other co-op games, where NPCs say the same thing whether they're supposed to be talking to one or two heroes.

When I saw the game running, I had to search the perimeter make sure that those crafty Microsoft representatives didn't have a high-end PC hidden under a table or something. I'm serious -- it looks incredible: the lighting is there, the animation is there, and the normal mapping is there. Vicarious Visions and id gave the Xbox platform a massive group hug in order to squeeze out every ounce of graphical power the console could muster.
 
It's a matter of AI and synchronisation. In Halo 2 there is a lot more stuff happening!

In Doom 3, every two minutes a no-brain monster with two attacks and no visible AI of any complexity attacks you in a corridor or room. In Halo 2 sometimes ten different AI's with (sometimes) advanced routines attack you from all directions.

There's a distinct difference between the two games. :) But yea, co-op online for Halo 2 would've been pretty cool. Doom 3 level design is great and the atmosphere is so awesome with the story telling. Gameplay is pretty boring after 5 levels though. makes me want to stop playing, but I just wanna finish it so I can shelve it...

You try packing levels with so much details and nooks and crannies. Pretty impressive. They don't just look good, they are also functional in making you believe it's a real Mars base, plus of course the hell enviroments and caves and all. Very nice, very impressive. Boring to play, but very sweet to walk around in and discover secrets and look at the pretty graphics.

Yeah, but it's a matter of opinion. I thought it was boring, but the reviews where pretty good in general. Still the sheer amount of effort put into the enviroments, wether or not they functioned as an enhancement to actual gameplay or not, where amazing. The mood, the atmosphere was perfect. Just the repetative gameplay was the big flaw, not the design, which was nigh perfect. (I think) That's why I'm still playing it anyways, not to shoot the same monsters all over again for some more hours but to oggle at the enviroments.

How can the Xbox version of the game be shaping up nicely, when it is going to be inferior in every way to a game that was already a "dissapointment"?
 
I'll be buying it despite the fact many claim it's mediocre, or worse. My PC is too shitty to run it, anyway, so if I want it, the Xbox version is my only choice. Plus, by the time it comes out I'll have Xbox Live (just a matter of getting a router, really), so I'll do the co-op with friends for sure.
