You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become Phil Spencer

Phil shutting down studios

I will always hate Greenberg and Booty more than them.

Phil Spencer had SOME good ideas and tried a few things that didn't work out.

Booty and Greenberg I struggle to think of ANYTHING positive they have done for the brand.

Jez and Colin Moriarty discussed Booty and even Jez couldn't come up with a reason he was good.

Oh he has left a trail of death in his wake and Xbox has no shot at any kind of a revival with him and Bond at the helm

On the other end of the spectrum those who believe in him do give him some idol like status which I also don't understand
Who give him idol status beyond a few weirdos? there are more who hate him, there are youtubers who make weird hate videos on him almost daily. Like he fucked their girlfriend or something.

The reason Spencer carries so much weight within Xbox, is because Microsoft was about to end Xbox when Xbox One failed, and Spencer convinced them that Game Pass could work as an app that they can push to all devices beyond just game consoles.

And while it probably has been a lot more rocky than they expected, it has kinda worked.

it has kinda worked
In which universe?

- Xbox hardware sales have plummeted since.
- Software sales are 10x worse than that.
- GP subscriptions have stalled way below expectations to the point Microsoft does everything they can to hide the numbers.
- Xbox has had to go full third-party, even putting the likes of Gears/Forza and, undoubtedly, Halo on PS5.
- Microsoft canceled their Xbox handheld and instead just settled for an Xbox-themed ROG Ally.
- They've been bleeding money to the point where they have laid off thousands of developers, closed down AA and AAA studios, and shut down several games including killing off Forza Motorsport, a flagship series synonymous with Xbox.
- And they've sunk many tens of billions of Microsoft's money in an attempt to make it work.

So, in what way did it "kinda work"?

It's a robost service that's built for the future of cloud, TV and PC.

The funniest thing was when he said this shit:
"We're not in the business of out-consoling Sony or out-consoling Nintendo. There isn't really a great solution or win for us, and I know that will upset a ton of people, but it's just the truth of the matter.

I see commentary that if you just build great games, everything would turn around. It's just not true that if we go off and build great games, all of a sudden you're going to see console share shift in some dramatic way."
Like, dude, Xbox literally "out-consoled" Nintendo on its first try and came damn close to doing it to Sony with the 360. You out-consoled Nintendo again with the Xbone vs WiiU. Ninty and Sony doing some foot shooting in those gens helped but still. All you had to do was keep pounding with the successful formula from Generations 6 and 7.

You guys lost your identity as a cool box that had cool games and let the suits take over with pushing Kinect games for the last few years of 360 and then failed harder with that always online shit for Xbox One (Don Mattrick was just the messenger, those kinds of decisions were made well over his head). You turned phony and gamers could smell it on you. The mass market saw no reason to get a One (horrible fucking name, by the way) over a PS4 due to the price and that sealed your fate. The poor sales gave the suits even more reason to interfere and gamepass was likely pitched to placate them. But they could only be held off from cutting their losses on Xbox hardware for so long and here we are.

You're thinking about recently. Before everybody was praising him. In 2014 you had "I believe in Phil Spencer" posts everywhere including here when people didn't even know who the hell he even was at the time. Idiotic images of him holding a badge with that forced slogan. He was on every media outlet imaginable doing interviews and being praised as the saviour of gaming. Yeah you had those "weirdos" too:

But they were a byproduct of the praise he was getting and these weirdos were not being ridiculed at the time by most because most people actually believed that crap.

Most never actually questioned Phil on any of his bullshit and when you did you would get labelled as a hater. Others saw some of the lies he was spouting about products he sold and labelled him a used car salesman. Very early on they saw he lied to people about VR on xbox, never came, showed hololens at E3 just to have some irrelevant crap there too. they saw his complete lies about gamepass increasing sales. how we had to wait for xbox series before Phil saves xbox because xbox one was Mattricks, saw the bullshit about "greatest games lineup in xbox history" year after year and the CGI trailers of games that weren't anywhere near ready, some now cancelled and studios shut. How Bethesda was "all about exclusive" s and the crap about "just 4 games", "not starfield not indiana jones". Phil slowly lost his reputation as the saviour for most people. His reputation wasn't always in the gutter. I'm sure come new gen the marketing and praise will kick in again.

The only skill, talent, that Phil Spencer has is knowing how to say what people want to hear and thus manipulate them.
He was never a hero, he's just good at deceiving people by telling them what they want to hear to manipulate them.

He's stupid and incompetent, and there's no way he can produce quality games or make a good console if he's stupid and incompetent and says what people want to hear to manipulate them.

But with this strategy of saying what people want to hear, it took a long time for people to realize that Phil Spencer is stupid and incompetent.

Well, thinking about it, Phil Spencer would be a good professional if he were just the public relations officer for Xbox and not the CEO who defines the brand's strategy and vision.

The guy literally Jeffery Dhamered Xbox. I'm sorry, people are not going forgive or forget.

Lol. I was thinking the same. Microsoft is making tough decisions now, because of Phil's failures.

2015 Phil, The Optimist In-Chief and backwards compatibility hero:
-"We've got the greatest games lineup in Xbox history."
-"Your Xbox 360 games will be playable natively on your Xbox One."

2018 Phil, birth of the Netflix-style ambition:
-"Our cloud engineers are building a game streaming network to unlock console-quality gaming on any device."

2019 Phil, content over consoles and gamepass everywhere:
-"The business isn't how many consoles you sell, the business is how many players are playing the games."
-"We want to bring gamepass to any device that somebody wants to play on…"

2021 Phil, The Bethesda Arc begins, gamepass now center stage:
-"If you're an Xbox customer, the thing I want you to know is this is about delivering great exclusive games…"
-"Gamepass is very, very sustainable now and continues to grow"
-"2021 is going to be an incredible year for Xbox Gamepass."

2023 Phil, unconditional surrender to Nintendo and Sony:
-"We're not in the business of out-consoling Sony and Nintendo."
-"Making great games wouldn't help Xbox compete."
-"Even if we build great games, no one will replace their PS5 with an Xbox."

2024 Phil, The stoic, multi-platform avenger
-"Not every screen is equal, but games should be the focus."
-"Closure of any team is hard…"

2025 CEO Phil, assumes final true form:
-"We are accountable to Microsoft for running a good business."
I think %90 of the times it's personal. What does it take to win everyone including you? I don't deny how a company should behave when they operate at a loss and our instincts tells us all this should never happen in the first place.
