Is Xbox really just a controller now?

I play only on the couch though so have all my hardware connected to a big screen TV where i spend my time like this:

- 85% Steam PC (9800X3D + 5080)
- 14% Switch (for Nintendo exclusives, soon replaced by Switch 2)
- 1% PS5 (exclusives only, but Sony barely release any good these days, except Astro)

Here is the thing. I ALWAYS play with an Xbox Series Elite Controller on PC. Even in mouse and keyboard games I just use Steam input to map to Xbox Controller (paddles are great here). I have spent countless hours in Total War: Warhammer 3 this way for example.

Basically is spend 85% of my gaming time on and Xbox Controller (in Steam..)
I am actually using all my old Xbox Series controllers even - many games really just feel like high powered Xbox titles, like Doom Dark Ages for example.

.. is this the future of Xbox? A controller? I am fine with this future and hope they continue to make great controllers (that done break as easily...)

Not a very good one, since DualSense is way better, but sure

The dualsense is legitimately one of the best gaming controllers i've ever used. Insanely comfy for my hands and i love the feel of it and the build quality. It feels like a quality controller as soon as you pick it up and it has the perfect weight too it as well. Add in all the features it has built into it as well and i think it's close to perfect.

Yeah, DualSense is a legit game changer by itself. I have a lot of complaints with it, but I still think it's the GOAT controller, which shows you how much I love what it gets right lol

Why is it the best?
The app store functionality for one, you don't get that on PlayStation or Nintendo consoles at all.

Solid array of games, including Game Pass access if you choose to go down that route.

Arguably still the most powerful console on the market, in spite of the recent price hikes. I know the PS5 Pro exists but that thing has been a dud so far.

Others can chime in.

You don't get it on Xbox right now either

Solid array of games
Smaller library than either PS or Nintendo (both of which also have access to a lot of Xbox's best games)

Game Pass access if you choose to go down that route.
Definitely a pro for Xbox

Well, PS5 Pro...

Yeah, but so has the extra power in Series X (which is frequently outperformed by PS5). And with the cost of Series X and PS5 Pro being so close to each other now, there's no real advantage.

My 2¢

For me it mostly is along with Game Pass as a service.

I just wanna see what they're going to do with haptics that change things up, and if Sony could release a new pad with better battery life.

Xbox goes beyond the joystick for me, because on my PC I consume the service (Game Pass) and games from Xbox studios.

I divide my time between PC and Nintendo practically 50/50.

I sold my PlayStation console, but I buy the games it releases for PC, I'm even replaying Returnal at over 120fps and the experience is great. The next game published by Sony that I should get is Stellar Blade.

So basically:

Xbox: controller, service and games
Nintendo: console and games, but I subscribe to the service to play online Splatoon, Mario Kart, Smash, etc.
PlayStation: games on PC, I might eventually repurchase the DualSense
PC: Steam, free games (Gog, Epic and the like), Game Pass and emulators

Price and missing features on PC limit the overall adaption of this controller as the premier standard controller on PC.

If you play 95% of your games on PC and use Xbox controller you are playing wrong, 8bitdo Ultimate / Ultimate 2 or gtfo

Xbox is more than a controller, its more than the most powerfull console in the world, its more than gamepass, more than games that will power your dreams.

Xbox is a way of life, family, a collection of the most skilled alpha gamers in the world. Microsoft are the greatest and we will follow them into war if called on.

WHAT?!?!

Arguably? Are you okay? How is it even an argument that the Series X is more powerful then the PS5 Pro? The PS5 Pro sales have no bearing on it's power.

This is one of the dumbest Xbox fanboy things I've ever heard. Fucking hell.

You're right, the sales has no bearing on its power. Not did I right out say the Series X is more powerful than the PS5 Pro.

I do believe that the sales have and will play a factor on what developers decides to do going forward.

No, you said it's arguably the most powerful console despite PS5 pro existing.

How exactly is it even arguable that the Series X is still the most powerful console?

OG Xbox and Xbox 360 titles exist, and I'd argue that the OG Gears trilogy is worth owning a Series console by itself.
I don't really buy games on Xbox any more since there's really no longer incentive to do so, but I do keep my Series consoles around to play the backward compatible games in my library and to use the Game Pass sub that I trade MS reward points for. I use often XBPlay on my Steam Deck to play from my series consoles via local remote play from console and that works marvelously.

I have a fun design lab Xbox Series controller that I use exclusively with my PC. But to be honest I rarely pick it up any more ever since I got the 8btidoo ultimate 2. The Xbox controller is probably going to become the one that goes in my backpack so I can use it with my ipad when I travel.

It's d-pad fucking sucks. It's objectively far worse than the one they used in the dual shock 4. Absolutely terrible controller to play fighting games or 2D games with.

I hope that against all odds Xbox makes a huge comeback, if only just to see GAF implode on itself.

Massively dense.

The PS5 Pro is probably around 3 million units sold. The XSX is probably around 15 million units sold.

The PS5 will probably sell at least 43 million more units. If the Pro sells 20% of these units (and I think it'll be more with GTA6), you're looking at at least 12 million units sold of a mid gen refresh that is tremendously expensive in a much shorter period of time than the XSX.

The idea that you want to dismiss the price increase for the XSX reveals a real problem inside of you. A sickness.

$700 is still $700 no matter how you slice it. I still full expect the price increase from Sony's end as well.

You don't expect it, you want it. You're desperate for it.

Sony not increasing the price shatters whatever equilibrium you feel like you need to successfully console war. Even now you're making wild arguments like the XSX being a better deal than the PS5 Pro despite being significantly less powerful than it.

See how you even say 700 even though Sony actually discounted the price down to 650... I'm sure that grinds your gears because you don't know what Microsoft is doing.

Let me let you in on a secret. Microsoft is quiet quitting. They've lost total address market in each subsequent generation after the 360. Nothing suggests to Satya Nadella that that pattern is going to change.

The Xbox One sold 58 million units and the Xbox Series won't sell more than 35 million units. At the same decline you're looking at between 12 and 21 million units. Either way a catastrophe.

There will be no traditional Xbox console hardware moving forward. That's a reality that you should come to terms with.

The touchpad is clutch on the dualsense when you need just to move a pointer a bit. And if you want accelerators, it's sony or nintendo, valve. Only ms is stubborn on that.

The dual sense's haptics and force feedback are amazing. My favorite controller rn is actually the switch pro controller. The controller that forces you to tune your own dpad. Which in my case resulted in a finely tuned dpad after several hours cocking around. Dual sense is a little heavy, I think the ds might be more comfy shape, hard to tell. And the ds4 has the gyro and touchpad, which I find pretty important when using on pc, despite them being near unused on the ps5 itself. Can't comment on the dpad. Seems fine but I have not tried to do anything really hard on it in all these years.
