Is your avatar a bunch of crappy text? The thread to fix that lives again!

Ok. With the influx of new members, already a couple are making their avatars wrong, to go along with the hundreds, if not thousands of other users that already have avatars that exceed the guidelines stated in the Terms of Service.

Avatar image size should not be greater than 90 pixels by 120 pixels, and no greater than 150k in size.

Not many people have problems with the 150k+ ones (aside from those people that use 2mb gifs), the main issue is the 90x120. The forum makes every avatar be 90 pixels across.

That is where people get tripped up. If your avatar is 100x100, the forum resizes it down to 90x90, which is fine. It's when people use an avatar that is 70x110, which in theory is within the limits, except 70 is not 90. So, it increases the avatar by a ratio that makes that 70x110 avatar to 90x130. That is too big.

All you need to do to be safe is make whatever avatar you are using be 90 pixels across first, then 120 or under. Resize it to 90, and whatever the paint program you use will ratio the avatar to be however much bigger. If the vertical number is over 120 after making the horizontal one 90, cut off however many pixels you need to.

A couple of people I have already changed their avatars. If your avatar is currently this:
badav.png
, then I replaced it. For those that have had it changed, post in here and I will revert it so you can fix your avatar.

If you are having trouble resizing it, or whatever the issue, just post in this thread (along with the avatar you want to use in your post) and maybe some kind fellow user will fix it for you.

After the date in the title, if you have an avatar that exceeds the guidelines, you may get
badav.png
as your avatar instead. It really should not be an issue. Most people only have one avatar. I have 573. All 573 fit within the guideline. It should not take more than 2 minutes to fix. Please do! Some users have had avatars that exceed the limit for months, possibly years. Thank you.

As people have already said, the easiest way to check is to just right click the avatar and go to properties; it should say what it is being scaled to.

Update: It sounds like I can give whoever I want another chance, so if your avatar was changed to text, I can give you another go at it.

Update 2: If you repeatedly make avatars that go over the limit, I'm less likely to change it back over and over.

Update 3: There's an "avatar request" thread in the OT, where some folks will be happy to help you out with an avatar that fits the guidelines if you just can't seem to get the one you want going. Give them a shot: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=390648

charlequin says: PROCEDURE FOR GETTING YOUR AVATAR FIXED

Here is the procedure for getting your avatar fixed:

  1. Find a new source image that's appropriate in content and can be scaled to an appropriate size.
  2. If necessary, ask in the thread to get someone to help you fix it up so it's the right filesize (under < 150k) and image size (<= 120 pixels tall when scaled to exactly 90 pixels wide.)
  3. Go into your user control panel and set this new fixed image as your avatar.
  4. Post the finished image in the thread and indicate that you've completed step 3.
  5. At this point someone will notice and (assuming you're not some sort of degenerate repeat offender or something) remove the lock on your avatar, at which point your chosen avatar will immediately shine through

Following this procedure makes it easy for us to verify that you're in fact able to follow the rules and therefore deserve your avatar privileges back, which in turn makes us happier to give them back to you!

You should use this instead:

From a usability stand point, that is less than ideal. From a lulz perspective, you can try a little harder.

Question on avatar scaling which I really want to know: If someone tried a 1x101 avatar, it would scale to 90x9090?!

Edit: Oh god I realized how bungled this math was :lol to rectify this, I offer to resize avatars later in the day.

Edit 2: @ kaysee, your avatar is exactly the proper dimensions.

Yeah it was a
bad
joke alright. I like how you took my post too seriously though :lol

Both TheThunder and Puck have correctly sized avatars.

For people that follow: If you KNOW your avatar is 90x120 it is fine and there is no reason to ask in paranoia. It is not as if some strange magic will make your 90x120 avatar suddenly 90x140

Pro-tip: width is the reference (I guess that's to prevent the layout to be stretched - on a arelated note, it happens with long usernames and that's bloody annoying), so if your avatar is 80x120 don't think you're safe because it will be resized to 90x135.

edit: bonus question. Is the size limit 150KB, or 150,000B?

This thread reminds me that I want to change my avatar, but at the same time, I love my Scribblenaut Mike Jones...

Decisions, decisions.

You can right click your avatar and go to Properties to see the image dimensions (original and scaled). It's not like some of us have a magical ruler program in our browsers.

I don't know how to make avatars, so no idea to judge. Someone cut this one for me, I assume it fits, as it was a nice gesture

wow some of you can't read.

just open up firefox, right click on image, view image info. It should give you the resolution, what it is scaling to, and the size. Every browser should have something similar. It's not hard to check for yourself.

Posting here so I can review it.
Yours is 100px × 149px (scaled to 90px × 134px)
It should be 90x120.

Yours is fine buddy.

Repost for gaming side, the best thing ever after the Youtube Me script!

Here is an easy method to check it, a Greasemonkey script for Firefox that ads fail on avy's that are too large! Note that (i think) it doesn't check the files size, though.Use it, check every time you change your avy, and everyone is happy.

Mods, if you don't want people using this, please say something or edit the post. Thank you.

Again, if your avy scales down to the correct size (say, 100x100 to 90x90), you must correct it. Mind the file size as well. I'll try and find some scalling tutorial for GIMP.

no you don't.

For Google Chrome users, right click the image and choose "Inspect Element." In the "Developer Tools" window that pops up, click the bar that says "Metrics." It'll show the image's dimensions in a box below that.

If anyone knows an easier way to do this in Chrome let me know and I'll love you forever.

Yeah, the computer isn't going to lie to you. If it says it's less than 120 pixels high, it is in fact less than 120 pixels high. This isn't a difficult thing guys.

Do small images get scaled up to 90 pixels wide, potentially violating the 120 pixel height rule?
Yeah. For example, a 50x100 image would display as 90x180 and be in violation of the rules.
