Is Your PSP Honeymoon Over?

Musashi Wins!

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
Mine is.

It's not just lack of new games. Every system goes through a drought. Especially new ones. For some reason, so many of the features and possibilities that seemed worthwhile seem a little superfulous to me now that the shine has worn off. And the negatives loom larger than ever.

-It's a really pretty system. But between worry about damage and the size of the thing, it's not all that handy to take anywhere. Even more so now that summer has rolled along and I'm not carrying a jacket or the like. Not to mention that you might as well not play it outside. For both the damage and screen lighting.

-It's not designed well to pull off the things it wants you to believe it can accomplish. Watching movies on it is not that great. Even worse if you're not buying the rip off UMD films and watching something from the memory card the sound is awful. It's not all that ideal for music, and getting files easily over to the system was obviously not their paramount concern. At least if their not of the format they've narrowly defined.

-The storage medium is too fucking expensive. I'm not broke, I paid too much for this fucking thing on day one, but the cost for a decent amount of memory is ridiculous. Especially when the main uses for it aren't all that killer.

-And what about the games? I can only speak for myself here...but the haters were right. Once the novelty of seeing near console graphics on the go wears thin, you're left with the same game you were probably playing at home, only less so. With a worse controller. And light online play if you're lucky. While the occasional long trip might make this seem worthwhile with the load times and similarity of play it's not that compelling for on the go. Again, my opinion, but it turns out the needs for a portable game are not the same as the ones for home. Sorry to those I mocked for suggesting otherwise.

-What about the games? Their not bad, but again...no one is really missing that much either. And the pipe looks thin. Mighty thin. If you're not excited (as I'm not anymore) about the graphical capability a PS2 light version of GTA is probably not going to set you're world on fire. Guess what, besides a fucking FF movie, that's the big title. And Madden? I'm not really looking forward to a hack port of that after the baseball games.

Anyhow...I know GAF loves/hates these sort of threads but I suspect I'm not alone in feeling like I sold myself a bit of a dog here. There will probably be hardware revisions and emulators to take some of the sting away for some, but I don't know if I'll hang out for that. A book and a GBA seem a far better value. Not to mention an Ipod. Consolidation or not, that only works when the system is much better than the pieces it replaces. I don't think this is. My only heavy experience with Sony Hardware is this and the PS2 and apparently Kutaragi could use someone from the real world whispering in his ear a little.

Forgive my rant, GAF whaaaa whaaaa!

I thought mine was, but I just downloaded the newest PCE emulator -- with sound! -- and I think we've rediscovered the spark.

I just started playing Metal Gear Acid... I'm in love all over again... 512mem duos are expensive? News to me...

Hell no. I attribute this to two things:

1) My copy of Hot Shot Golf just arrived.

2) I'm not a pussy about carrying it around with me. Really, they're not that fragile. Mine makes the journey to and from work every day without a screen protector and it's just fine.

I've felt that way every now and then, but then I'm sitting on the throne or waiting while the missus is shopping and it's all good again.

There are PLENTY of great games, my only complaint is that I'm worried about it's future. It seems like publishers aren't going to take any chances on it, or spend any real time on it. And it's getting crunched in their resource time by the next generation of consoles, where publishers seem to think "the real money is".

Just look at Xbox360 or even PS3's announced games vs the PSP. It's much like the GBA or DS, but Sony doesn't crank out the first party titles like Nintendo does. Games that just fit the system perfectly.

Until I get around to buying HSG, yes the honeymoon is over. I don't really worry about carrying mine but it is rather bulky to carry in my pockets. If I had any use for a jacket, then it would be a little easier. I don't take long trips or have very much downtime outside of my home. Then again, finals are next week so I will be putting my PSP to good use then. I've actually been playing more GBA games than anything lately, but that shouldn't be a surprise with Twisted! and FE 8.

I don't own one yet. But I think the most interesting feature for me will be the video capabilities. I already have an mp3 player and I'm not terribly interested in the quasi-PS2 software (ie, HSG, DMC PSP, GTA:LCS, GTMobile, etc), so that will be the main selling point for me, I think.

Carrying it around is not the worst thing, I have the hard logitech case. It's just not great either. That's a minor complaint.

Realizing that Hot Shots Golf was not that great and that MVP was a bitch ass port were harder moments.

Agreed on pretty much all fronts. I took a trip to N'awleans a couple weeks back, got pretty excited about playing some MGA or Golf on the flight. Ended up reading a book instead.

My PSP still sits untouched after that trip, too delicate to lug around, too bulky to stick in a pocket for music playback. Watching movies or video content is really impractical too, I just can't sit around and hold that machine up in such a passive manner.

The future outlook isn't really thrilling me either, I do expect a few must-haves will filter through, and god knows I still have plenty of gaming leftover from that launch, but my excitement dropped pretty damned fast.

Mine is still keeping its virginity... (kidding.)

Yes. asides occasional Lumines love, it's not getting much use.
I'm thinking of getting 1G memory stick and perhaps use it to watch some anime/movies, but finding it at reasonable price is kinda hard at the moment it seems..

I am hoping for some good srpg or even rpg for it - something like radiata story would be nice - but E3's weak showing was a real let down.

I'm so sick of racing games now after GT4 and RR, and all the showings for next gen. Something new please.

When is Infected coming out? Because that is the next PSP game I want. After that...Tenchi no Mon, Acid 2, and GTA. Not a big deal to me though. I think picking are pretty slim for everything until the X360 comes out.

The honeymoon is over here. HSG was the only thing really keeping me playing, and eventually I got bored of playing the same few courses repeatedly to earn a scarf or a hat. Lumines is still very fun, but I've hit a wall around 480k that I haven't been able to get over for a couple of weeks, and I don't feel like trying for quite a while. The only games I'm interested in don't show up for several months either.

And it doesn't help that I'm not in day to day situations where having a PSP would ease boredom or kill time. It's part of being a gadget nerd and early adopter though.

Yea, headphones are a MUST for any form of imported video content. Even with light ambient noise, those system speakers top-out at such a low default signal.

I think the psp , like all new hardware needs a killer app, something that you just cant get from any other console or handheld, gba has advance wars, ds has... nintendogs :) psp will not be worth it even with a big seller like the gta will be, it needs a whole new franchise unique and tailored to psp's strengths.

Your comments echo the worries that prevent me from buying the system. The abilities of the PSP are impressive, no doubt about it, but the more I think about it I find myself going "do I really need all that on the run?". I suppose if I took public transportation or was ever in moments where I found alot of idle time on my hands away from home, the PSP would be a godsend. As is, when it comes to movies, high-end graphics, and, well, everything the PSP does, I can just do it better at home. It doesn't help that the system is pretty fricken' big and heavy for something intended to be portable. I love my GBA SP, but I also throw it around without worry and, frankly, the games and its graphics are perfectly adequate for my portable gaming needs - which is generally shit time at work or when I'm crashing on the couch at home and just need a game to peck away at. The system's small, protects its screen without the need of another accessory, and come on, the SP has Twisted. Twisted!

If I were to buy a PSP, and chances are I probably will if just for a unstoppable addiction to technology, I know I would be doing it mainly for the "gee-whiz" factor - to try out emulation and other homebrew things I'd wind up enjoying more on an actual PC. A few months later it'd probably wind up in my unloved hardware bin next to my PDA.

Much like that PSP episode of south park I played the thing relentlessly for about 2 weeks. Bought a whole bunch of shit for it but eventually it was placed next the DS. I was actually gonna do a thread like this as well, becuase it seems more apparent to me now that rushing out to buy a new system handheld , console , whatever just isn't worth it. I mean I bought every system in the past 5 years for its launch price, in the case of PSP on launch day but I still think its a mistake.

Currently I own the following-
Darkstalkers- I have no trouble with the PSP dpad but the load times are 6-10 seconds, which is about 5-9 seconds more then I can take in this day and age, on a portable atleast. The game itself is allright though. Total playtime = 4 or 5 hours maybe, owned since 2 weeks after launch

Lumines - The best game on the system ... still. I've prolly logged close to 20 hours into the game though I haven't played it lately much. Bought it the day after launch.

Ridge Racer - A good racer, I've played for 10 hours or so and really like the game but again haven't done much with it lately. Launch day purchase

Wipeout - played for 2 hours maybe, its a good game I just have more fun with ridge racer. Prolly could have done without it. Launch game

Replacement headhphones- becuase I can't stand earbuds, they always fall out

512 meg memory stick- I love throwing shit on it when I bought it but I don't really bring the system out much , and beyond 1 episode of south park I put on it it hasn't been very usefull to show to folks.

I don't have access to a wifi network so the online options on the thing are completly useless , I have played a local wifi game though and I do enjoy the fact that I dont' need 3 cords to play a game with someone, you can even boot swap your disc to play a multiplayer game with 1 copy instead of 2.

So to answer the honeymoon question, I'd say for now the honeymoon has ended, but on that note I think the PSP was a better purchase then the DS, however the DS has more software coming in the next year that I want to play then the PSP does...

Heh, I was just going to post the current release list from EBGames, actually, which isn't nearly as bad as I thought it was. But anyway; no. The PSP is still an absolutely fantastic system to me, and I think it really sucks that such utterly inferior competition is recieving even a fraction of the success it is. I do feel a bit underwhelmed at how the release list for the immediate future stacks up, but I think it is very unfair to fault the PSP software-wise as of right now, because it's launch lineup is still, at least to me, several times better than the DS's entire accumulated library since it's release, and the two titles that have interested me post-PSP launch (Hot Shots and Mercury) are better than anything released on the DS since launch, imo. This is not taking into account import software, because Meteos looks excellent, as does Kirby and Nintendogs (which is annoying at the same time, in the case of the latter), but even if it was, I would still say the PSP's library is quite a bit better than the DS's. The DS is recieving a lot of praise for it's lineup that isn't even available, which would be fine by me, if the lineup that is already available weren't so unbelievably poor.

I'm hoping TGS turns out a much more significant showing for the PSP, and GTA gets revealed soon, because the E3 showing seemed almost completely MIA, and I know there is a lot more in development than that.

All bets are off once those emulators kick-off on the 1.5 front.

Sometimes I feel like the only soul on this earth that just can't dig into Katamari or Lumines...

After MVP I thought the love had ended, but I revisited Lumines and I remember why I fell in love in the first place. My 1 gig stick is on the way, and if you've seen what Samurai Champloo looks like encoded at 1500 mb/s you would know why the PSP is a very useful little gadget.

I pretty much solved the problem with muted sound when playing movies off the MS. Well, that is, the problem was solved with mucho help from others. Still.

I haven't turned it on to play with since early May. That says something. Right now, the recent GBA releases are SLAUGHTERING the competition, and what little attention I can sneak away from Fire Emblem and Wario Ware Twisted goes to reading some books I purchased during the schoolyear, but was unable to read due to time constraints, and NDS games. I don't regret getting the PSP, because I know I'll be able to justify the cost eventually, but not now. It's been nothing but a waste of money, occasionally illumined by Lumines and Hot Shots Golf (I only even really like 2 of the 7 games I own for it), but ultimately... blah.

And E3? Fucking pathetic.

Right now, the GBA is kicking ass, and when it slacks off a bit in another 2 or 3 months, the DS will be picking up the slack without a hitch with such instant classics as Advance Wars and Castlevania.

The 1gb stick was a complete waste. Watching movies on the go was a fun novelty, but now just isn't worth the effort of transcoding and suffering through a signficantly degraded experience, and I've got 54 gbs of music on my iPod to keep me company when I'm reading a book or studying.

1- I will get HSG too so my GBA will go back to my gf.

2- Fine until you wind up being seen by a bunch of young idiots who gang up to try and steal it from you. :lol (Happened not long ago)

Nope.

Been playing HSG whenever I can. Once that's done, gotta get MGA and then Ridge Racer. Never thought I'd enjoy playing non-rpgs so much.

By the time those are done with, Popolocrois will be out :D

Dont' have a memory stick yet, so I still have the movie player part to mess with. My friend's friend that works at Sandisk is gonna get me a 1g for 49 bucks soon. can't wait.

I'm on my second honeymoon, I just got in contact with a friend who had a bunch of 1GB Duos for sale cause people were buying them and trying to use them in cameras that used the old stick format. I bought 2 OEM 1gb stick for 90$CAD EA :D Now I have all my emulators/roms/manga/gamesaves/ on one stick and all my media on the other.

Still a little pissed off due to the lack of RPG's but the SNES emulator makes up for that :)

mine isn't over. i've actually used my psp everyday since launch, and i completed 2 of my 6 games 100%, and another one nearing 100%. the last max tour in Ridge Racer is so cheap

i wonder if it would be wiser to spread out the launch titles over the months instead of blowing everything in one load. i still thought the launch titles was some of the best yet for a launch

I've had mine for three weeks, still going strong. Between Hot Shots Golf sessions I watch movies uploaded to my memory stick. I don't get your complaint about sound, it's awful!? Man, it's good enough for me, definitely not bad. Maybe you convert your movies with lots of sound compression?

About carrying it with me...I just put it in the soft case included with the value pack, and put it in my backpack or pocket, and that's that. At first I was paranoid about me or anyone or ANYTHING touching the screen (damn you GAF for scaring me like that), but I don't care as much anymore. I mean sure I stay away from the screen, but I'm not getting a heart attack because of some microscopic scratch on it. It's not visible when you actually use it anyway.

I find the games available now are great considering it's been out for such a short while. And even though some of the games are based on popular console franchises, how long has it been since the last Ridge Racer? Or the last Wipeout game? And Lumines is Lumines. :)
I mean, even when you get used to the pretty graphics the games are still great IMO, and not available for PS2. :P

But I'm worried about the future, it looks thin with PSP games. Not interested in GTA for PSP since I don't care much for the series, although I'm kind of curious about what kind of game it will be. I mean, people are assuming it will be "like the PS2 games", but I have a feeling the concept could be something different (kind of like MGS-->MGA, but not quite as extreme). I probably won't care for GT Mobile, WE might be cool and DMC is interesting (as in what kind of game it will be). And yeah, Virtua Tennis is looking good...but I can't think of much besides that. The FFVII spinoff game is sooo far away, and it might end up being mediocre anyway. Well, at least Hot Shots Golf will keep me occupied for a long while.

I don't want to derail your thread, but right now I'm actually regretting my DS purchase more. But that will most likely change later this year.

This is the main reason these months seem so dry.

Fuck no. I still play Ridge Racer, Lumines, & Darkstalkers, plus videos of that asstastic Keyra girl and a certain last chapter of a prequel trilogy have made it into my PSP so I'm set until Death Jr., Daxter and GTA LCS arrive.

Yeah, I just don't get the point of it. When I watch a movie, anime, whatever, I want to experience it on a nice TV with 5.1 sound while sitting in a comfortable chair and, ya know, not having to hold the thing I'm watching the movie on. I plopped some movies onto my Axim, thought it was really cool for a few minutes, and then realized how just utterly impractical it was. But I'm a crazy person.

mine was as soon as I started tiring of Lumines.

and to all of you saying no because you just downloaded a newer emulator..

FU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :lol

I just finished up Metal Gear Acid and could use something new. I don't really want Wipeout, though, so whatever. I guess I'm stuck playing Meteos multiplayer (Meteos > Lumines? hmm) until something decent comes along. Oh, wait, nothing is. :(

I'm loving the ability to rip movies... at lunch each day I'm either playing a game or watching a sub-titled movie that I haven't had a chance to watch at home(cause this missus isn't really in da sub-titlin).

That is when I have the PSP... lately the missus has been swiping it to take to work and play Dynasty Warriors... she made a comment when we first bought it that we might have to get two.... I can seen that day rapidly approaching... hoggin my damn PSP lunch times....

My PSP moved to death row after E3, if for any reason at all i decide i don't feel like buying something and opt to trade in instead my PSP is gone. In the long run it will actually work out better i think since if i ever choose to rebuy i'll be able to just buy a standard pack w/out all the crap (i use the cloth and that's it heh).

I like strategy games, i like RPG's, i like a good action/adventure game, racing games and sports games really don't do it for me and the ones i do enjoy i'm not interested in for PSP since i'd rather play on a console. For me personally there is just no content whatsoever coming out for what's basically over a year that falls into my category of "must play on day 1". That's not to say there aren't a few (and i stress the few part) games that have my interest but they're all wait and sees and rentals. Ghost in the shell falls into this category. Doubt it's going to get all that better anytime soon since developers aren't falling over themselves to work on the PSP, especially with the next gen home consoles right around the corner.

The PSP for all it's worth is a great little handheld, but all that's worthless without software. Sony deserves to fail with the PSP and PS3 (possibly no HD, um ok) with how oblivious they are to their customers. Cosmetics are not the bottom line.

I'm sure people will pull out the good ol' screen argument at that point. :P

I hope Drinky's self-banned ends soon, we need serious PSP whores in here
I'm starting to lose hope on buying one :(

SONY WHITE PSP! Do it!

Software would be nice. I can watch movies on my 17" Powerbook thanx

Yeah, I admit I haven't been playing it so much lately (I tend to go through gaming phases, though....I'll play mostly conole for a couple months, mostly PC for a couple months, etc.), but I think its just the general malaise that crops up after any launch setting in. It was this way with the N64, the PS2, the Xbox, the GameCube, the DS, and so on.

Its inevitable when competition starts heating up for companies to rush products out the door in order to hit the market at an opportune time. Unfortunately, in most cases, the software developers can't catch up to the hardware companies. Games that come out initially are usually missing features or below average, and everything else gets pushed back a few months past the hardware release. All it is is growing pains, and I'm willing to wait. I just hope developers have some good stuff in store.

However, 1.5 emulation would certainly help ease the pain of waiting. :)

Just stick with it guys, it'll get there eventually. It doesn't help that it practically launched on the eve of the summer drought season. :(

they already have emulators. GBA flashcart :P

Those of us with PSPs and Mem Sticks won't be buying DS flashkits. And for all it's worth, the PSP will likely be able to emulate a heckuva lot more than the DS.

They won't. I haven't picked one up yet. After I finish up business with 360 preorders, then I'll get one, most likely at the end of June.
