Rebels fighting in Iraq under ISIL banner announce creation of Islamic state, extending from Diyala to Syria's Aleppo.

Fighters in Syria and Iraq have announced the establishment of a "caliphate", referring to the system of rule that ended nearly 100 years ago with the fall of the Ottomans.

In an audio recording distributed online on Sunday, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) declared its chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as "the caliph" and "leader for Muslims everywhere".

Baghdadi is believed to be the leader of ISIL

ISIL announced that it is now called "The Islamic State". Al Jazeera's Imran Khan explained that a caliphate is effectively an Islamic Republic led by one leader, regardless of national boundaries.

According to the statement, the new caliphate stretches from Iraq's Diyala province to Syria's Aleppo.

With the announcement, the armed group is declaring that they are now legitimate, declaring the caliphate as the "true muslim state," our correspondent explained.

He added that this announcement might bring up problems with other Sunni fighters in Iraq, who are fighting the central government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, and not fighting for the caliphate.

Please tell me this isn't a group of Muslims that feel that their calling is to, by force, bring the world under Islamic rule. Because that's what this looks like.

So infighting imminent?

ISIS broke every Islamic law known to even to the common Muslim, their existence is purely Political to give the Iraq's PrimePuppet Al Maliki and Al Assad a reason to exist.
Their cooperation with Al Assad and Al Maliki Army is as clear as a Sun.

Who's the Caliph? Is there any chance of many Sunni leaders recognizing him?

The Caliph is Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, the infamous leader of the group itself.

And no I don't believe so.

The only reason ISIS is gaining traction in Iraq is because of the simple reason that they played the political game in such a way that they have been the spearhead of a Sunni uprising. THis uprising consists of several groups and not only ISIS in Iraq and some of them only wish a seperate Sunni state not an caliphate. I foresee infighting in the near future.

ummmm.... huh?

Guys, who is the scarier bad guy, ISIS or Russia? Please tell me which one I should warmonger for and which one I should denounce violence against?

What a joke. You're pretty funny.

I never thought i'd join the military but these guys are threatening my family's home country. (I'm Iranian)

If things get bad I might honestly join the US military just to help fight these guys off. But I don't even know what I could do. I can't see myself getting in a firefight.....But I guess it's too early to tell.

No one imagines themselves in a firefight. It just happens.

ISIS heading toward Saudi and Jordan and leaving while the Shia terrorist in Yemen is also moving toward Saudi in Sync with them is no mere coincidence.

ISIS killed a lot from the Free Syrian army and Syrian rebels and left some areas for the Areas for Bashars army to claim

Many young Saudi who volunteered to join ISIS were brutally dicabitated Which pushed Saudi to declare ISIS, Hezbollah and The Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist groups after.

Meanwhile, in Washington DC, Obama is looking into a mirror and saying "Saddam" five times.

Fixed that for ya.

This is some scary shit. Hopefully these kooks are taken care of.

This group of bandits can proclaim whatever they want; doesn't lend it credence.

Unless the UN is interested in sending in a multinational force, the US should stay the fuck out. No country in that region is ready for democracy except for the possibility of Iran.

Cost estimates for the war already put it beyond $2.7t not even factoring in the increased cost of VA care for decades to come.

Are you willing to spend another $2.7t and occupy Iraq for another 10 years? Do you want to stay 20 years?

Obama is doing the right thing and staying the fuck out; there are no "good guys" in the region and the only reason we even give a fuck about anything is because of oil. I'd rather we invest that $2.7t into research for nuclear fusion or tax incentives for renewables.

Fuck Iran. Fuck Suadi Arabia. Fuck OPEC.

What a joke. You're pretty funny.
Tell that to the pictures of Young Saudis who were brainwashed and pushed to "Jihad" with ISIS just to find out that ISIS was the enemy resulting in their brutal death and their pictures filled twitter.
Some of the Mothers appeared on Saudi media crying and urging parents to look after their children so they won't face what their children faced.

Good. Let them draw up borders, create a government and get a standing force. We can then ship all the extremist assholes preaching jihad and sharia law to this wasteland and laugh as they try desperately to claw back to a country with running toilets and electricity.

Guys, who is the scarier bad guy, ISIS or Russia? Please tell me which one I should warmonger for and which one I should denounce violence against?

Russia is a short guy with an ego problem trying desperately to recapture the "glorious" days of his heroes.

ISIS is tribalism gone into super sect fighter II turbo ultra HD remix mode.

Fuck Iran. Fuck Suadi Arabia. Fuck OPEC.

I'm good with this. Let them kill each other off. They're clearly desperate to keep that region of the world the number one shithole of humanity. I feel bad for the reasonable people that have to deal with the fucking lunatics that seem to multiply like rabbits over there though.

They should really try democracy while they're at it. It takes a little work to do. But the reward is so much better.

ISIS because they are a bunch of opportunistic brigands.

Russia is at least an actor on the world stage and, though they occasionally act belligerently, there are too many rich oligarchs there that depend on functional trade for their wealth that they are willing to ultimately compromise and work something out.

They should really try democracy while they're at it. The reward is better.

No, they shouldn't. They end up voting along sectarian lines and it just devolves into more sectarian violence. It was and is a fool's dream to believe that all people are ready for Western style democracy.

That's a fucked up thing to say.

the "shia" terrorists in yemen got nothing to do with what's happening in iraq or syria, in fact they're enemies(they're supported by iran).

That's a fucked up thing to say.

Who are the good guys? Please feel free to identify a party in all of this mess that can even remotely be considered worthy of supporting with American tax dollars and American lives.

There are normal people, civilians, but this is not a discussion of civilians because they are not going to overthrow ISIS nor are they going to overthrow a guy like Assad.

As I've stated, unless there is a multinational, UN backed operation, the US should not pick sides with the rebels, governments like Assad's or Iran or Saudi Arabia, nor should it be seen as propping up Maliki, either.

Charlie Digital knows about as much about Middle Eastern politics as he does cold reading and psychics.

Pick a side, tell me who you support and why and how much money you want to commit.

Then tell me how much you're willing to raise taxes to support the effort. How many more American lives we should sacrifice.

And don't forget to budget for VA care for another 4 decades while you're at it.

The only side even worthy of discussion are the Kurds and they already have their shit together.

P.S. You did not read a single thing I posted in that thread nor did you read my follow ups. On the very second page, I already said that my guess is that wife gave away some info when she pulled out her wallet and phone. But please, feel free to keep trying to be funny.

And once they are all nice and settled in, can we get together with Russia for some wargames? Use their country as a target, 2 weeks, country that gets the most kills wins. Bonus points for square miles of useless rocks turned into scorch marks.

Want a spoon to eat up that propaganda faster? This does not make sense at all.
