I'm gonna be honest, I can't picture where they could take the franchise from here. If some kind of sequel ever comes out, I fully expect it to be the kind that arose from design of committee sludge without any genuine creative vision behind it.

Bioshock Infinite was already a decline and I wouldn't be surprised if they make an even more dumbed down entry, so I don't know if this is for the better.

And btw, if the first two Bioshock games were inmersive sims, they weren't very good then (and I liked both). Bioshock was a FPS franchise. And just because the third one wanted to have a piece of the CoD cake doesn't change that. Just another franchise losing part of its identity to follow a 'winner' trend.

The first two games were both amazing, and easily one of the better titles made during the 7th gen. Then Infinite came out, and we don't talk about Infinite.

It has been TWELVE YEARS since the last Bioshock was released. 12 god damn years. This is unacceptable. This IP is way too good to just shelve and sit on.

What could be the reason that they haven't made one? Levine left, OK, find another person, no big deal, it's not like they're an indie studio. I am so desperate for one that i would even take Infinite 2 at this point ffs. Could look so damn good on UE5 (also run at 19fps while stuttering).

I loved Infinite. The transversal is amazing.

Prey got thrown under the bus at launch with IGN and Gamespot. There were bugs, as most would expect from system heavy games like immersive sims, and rather than contact studios to report and then maybe go over it if devs say it'll be patched, like we see a ton of times in modern times, they gave Prey a 4/10 (IGN)

They later changed it to 8/10, but damage was done. Peoples don't hunt re-reviews, they think the game is shit and move on.

Even a 8/10 is ludicrous for one of the best immersive sim ever.

Sucks that gamers don't seem interested in the genre, I don't get it, it's some of the best gameplay out there.

Bioshock is one of my favorite franchises. But it's Ken Levine's baby, like MGS is to Kojima. Bioshock 2 was great, but toothless in terms of story ambition and it pigbacks on the original setting etc.

It's painful I agree. Its such a great game, I remember when it came out I was having a hard time putting the controller down, I was so immersed in that game, it's a fucking masterpiece

Well for us it was popular and a pretty good game but who knows these corpos, they might of expected a way way higher selling point and decided its not worth the budget spent.

Thats the thing, people can call a game cult classic but if most people avoided it at its peak and waited for a deep discount or free on PS+ or gamepass, by that time the financial ship has sailed and they consider it a flop. Same for Driveclub, i bought it day one, even with broken MP on start, game had an amazing campaign and was a blast. But most people bought it for $10 and only then realizing how good it was. On top of that it had the best value for money season pass. For $20 you got content for 2 years straight from cars to tracks to events. Somehow Sony disliked the sales so much, they decided to nuke the game off its servers forever yet crap like On Rush is still on the store.

It made its money and then some, but not the next COD level of money, expecting 5 times return on investment

Someone at Bethesda thought it was a good idea to pick the name of a decade old « so so » franchise like Prey while devs were not wanting that name. A name like NeuroShock or anything else than prey would have been better. On top of having almost no marketing for it, and then they are disappointed, they think they should send this studio make a GAAS game to chase a stupid trend and when devs don't love what they're doing, we end up with Redfall and a studio closure.

Do what from software is doing. Even though for me elden ring is the weakest from game, i rather have them do things like sekiro, elden ring, armored core, over dark souls 4-5-6

Less people ought to pay attention to reviews and should begin seeking out responses coming from actual seasoned gamers with constructive impressions/opinions. This is aimed at both the gaming community and industry devs broadly speaking, btw.

I honestly believe game reviews in the recent decade have done more harm than good to games as well as gamers. Taking opinions/suggestions from people who can't be held accountable for their misfires and just strut away like its nothing.

I will say though, Zenimax may have played a factor in this event, given there was some murmur about some corporate meddling at time, that they forced Arkane's hand to slap "Prey" onto the project since the trademark was on verge of experation I believe. The game title was originally meant to be named something else. I might be off on this though. Anyway, it caused a mixed response, given how little it had in common with the original, and took away its chance to stand on its own merits. That may have played a part in its reception.

Infinite was kinda poop in hindsight. Part of the draw of the original was the setting, the creepiness, the eugenics shit, etc. I did not give a fuck about any of the characters in Infinite. The series needs to go back underwater or at least find a parallel environment. The rumored Antarctic setting for the next one sounds promising. Not sure what's taking so fucking long, though.

They could even do some kind of Island of Dr. Moreau type of shit on some isolated island and it would probably hit. Just have some crazy rich asshole trying to make a superhuman species resort that descends into chaos and I'm in.

Infinite was bad, and the DLC was worse. It deserved to flop. The only thing outstanding about it was the art design.

When the game designers feel wrong/insulted calling the game they have poured years into a certain title that has nothing to do with what you've done, then you know you fucked up. Imagine doing a media tour and you feel ashamed of even naming the game you present.

The launch trailer tried to get the COD crowd by this flashy action oriented reel trying to make the character another space marine.

Also marketing team rather than send the game to peoples who love immersive sims,

they sent it to Angry Joe

With him saying its "decent", clearly not the guy that even knows much or loves the genre, he didn't even do a review of it, imagine that.

Then they decided its a good idea to not have early reviews, so most sites were only managing to report the first few hours of gameplay. Early reviews would have meant to get some bug reporting and then to fix it with in-review patch or day 1 promise.

So on review day you get ÏGN 4/10 and Gamespot 6/10 (gamespot never went back to change score)

Bethesday fucked up big time. I'm not sure there were ever lessons learned from this fuck up. Probably some dumbass from marketing got promoted to an even hier tier.

Hyperbole aside...

I love Bioshock 1 and 2. I was shocked (cwidt?) by how much I liked 2 given it wasn't made by the same team. Minerva's Den was particularly great. I replayed both games many times over the years.

I'm glad I played through Infinite and the DLCs one time to experience the story and phenomenal voice acting, but wow was it total misfire on the gameplay front. Even accepting the very different setting, I just thought all that skyhook shit and big combat arenas fell flat. The feeling of "a knife fight in a phone booth" is what I liked about the combat of the first two games. Remove the panic of close quarters encounters and it's just a third rate FPS.

I keep hoping we'll see another one. Yeah, it's an old IP at this point and I doubt it will ever come out. But I would like to see it. I'm also interested in Judas if that ever manages to ship.
