Famitsu Publisher Talks PS3 Game Pricing
August 30th, 2005 Posted in Playstation 3, PS3

At the CESA Developers Confrence Hirokazu Hamamura, president of Enterbrain (publisher of Famitsu) talked about the price range of upcoming PS3 software. Much like Xbox and Xbox 360, he sees a significant price increase between PS2 and PS3. Hamamura-san forsees the cheapest PS3 software being at least $70 USD (EUR 57 / YEN 7,800) while the most expensive would be around $79 USD (EUR 65 / YEN 8,800). That will leave Canadian gamers paying $83-$94.

Perhaps Kutaragi was right and we should all just suck it up and get second jobs.

Props: Yasokiri (in Japan)

No freakin' way.

And with that news my wallet is officially closed to all things PS3 until they get their act together or the games come in used.

If he was referring in particular to US pricing, it's significant. Given that it was a Japanese publisher at a Japanese event, it's likely he was talking about Japanese software prices---which are in that range currently anyway for top-selling titles.

Quoted for truth.

If that were true, I predict two possible things happening:

1. Game industry crash.

or

2. People will get the console with the cheapest games and if one doesn't exist, someone will create it eventually.

Winner.

PS- I don't buy this story for a second. Looks like Japan prices are being directly translated and we all know this isn't the case.

I could only even begin to accept this if ALL games are going to be on BD-ROM. And even then..it shouldn't drive the cost up THAT much.

That's about what the rest of the world pays for games anyway.

I hope you guys with your weak ass green back gets a swift kick in the guts.

the math is all wrong, 6800 YEN PS2 games sell for $50, so 7800 YEN PS3 games would sell for $60, its not a straight currency conversion like what that writer used

Err...what do games currently cost over there? There's no fucking way I'm paying that much for a game. Sorry, I hated it with the SNES, and I don't plan on going back. I would kinda love it if the gaming market just imploded spontaneously due to the hubris of MS and Sony. That or Nintendo laughs all the way back to the bank. I am really not feeling this raise in prices when the games aren't getting any better. PEACE.

What is it that people don't understand about Japanese pricing?

Expect North American PS3 game prices to be the same as North American Xbox 360 game prices.

The article is basically saying Japanese gamers should expect to pay $10 more for PS3 games which means $60 games in the US.

In Japan normal games are 6800yen currently and big games like Super Robot Wars or Final Fantasy are currently 7800yen.

FFX was 8,800 Yen and was still sold for $50 in the US. Japanese prices have no bearing on how much games is sold for in other regions.

I'm calling it right now. If Nintendo comes in and undercuts both of them by a pretty significant amount ($20 on games, $150-200 on console price) then they are going to be gaining quite a bit of marketshare back.

$70 games? That's fucking ridiculous.

Edit: $60 games are ridiculous too, just less so. I've payed that much before for collectors editions.

They're too busy dancing in the streets shouting 'XBOX FOR TEH WIN!' and burning pictures of Ken Kutaragi to hear you right now. Maybe you should try again once the insanity passes. :p

$60 is still too much. I say we rebel, cancel our PS3/Xbox360 preorders, and come launch day just stay home while playing our current consoles.

We've got to show them they can't do this to us. If they don't stop the messing around, there's gonna be anarchy! ANARCHY!!!

8800 Yen for FFX?! Geez, if that 10 bucks greater thing holds up are we looking at nearly $100 for like FF13?!

Japanese games are ALREADY $65-75 THIS generation.

He's saying that games will be $10 more next generation IN JAPAN.

This has NO RELATIONSHIP to U.S. pricing.

SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP

Well, what about the $50 X360 games? All MS published games will be $50 (Although I bet Halo 3 is the exclusion). We don't know what 3rd party X360 games will be priced at. My guess is most will be 50 while EA and Activision (AKA Craptavision next gen) will try to get 60.

Gotta think you're right, bobbo. They played that card with the Ds and PSP so why not?

And I paid full retail for it since I was only able to pre-order it at a convenience store. Worth every Yen I paid for it.

But won't that translate indirectly to U.S. pricing if PS3 games are inherently more expensive than PS2 games? It might not be $70-$79, but if it's $60-70, ouch.

Of course, this could all be BS, right?

Between the two companies, at least EA is putting out a fine effort towards next gen. I think their next gen games like Fight Night, Def Jam, NBA Live, and Madden are worth a 10 dollar premium over current gen versions as EA is taking advantage of next gen power. Activision is just Xbox 1.5ing multiplatform games and are charging a premium for them.

One question, will the games be made on Blue-ray as well? Cuz I don't see how they could ever make a profit then, seeings how expensive they are at this time, and probably for a while.

Or can it just play Blue-ray movies, and the games will be made on regualr/dual layer dvds?

Actually, he's saying the average price of Japanese games this gen is 6800 yen and he expects that to increase to 7800-8800. That would mean a $10-$20 increase ;) Top tier RPGs would probably be 9800 if regular games increase that much.

Yes, lets give nintendo more money for doing something we can do now and for free! Anything Nintendo does, seems to get the support of their followers.

They could sell a piece of shit on a stick just by having nintendo written on it.
