It still baffles me that Tom Cruise didn’t win an Oscar for Born on the 4th of July

I’m surprised he hasn’t won a Razzie. His recent performances have ranged from bad to subpar, all with the trademark running. I haven’t watched the movie though, but I do know it’s highly regarded and Oliver Stone’s second best movie behind Platoon.

Who was he up against?

Dicaprio didn’t win all those years because other guys were simply better. Same thing has happened to cruise.

I miss the times when he did actual dramatic roles like Magnolia. He can act and is even good at it. Shame he doesn't anymore.

Yeh this is the thing when people say that someone should have won an Oscar. It might have been a great performance but you also have to consider the others from that year.

Why would he win a Razzie?

He showed moments of utter brilliance in that role, but also under the helm of some great directors. These performance, however, are but a few drops of water in an ocean of stardom, where Cruise chose fame and leading man status over more nuanced parts. Can't blame him, really, as he's been competent throughout...but you realize when you watch him in Born on the fourth of July, Magnolia, Tropic Thunder, Rain Man, Collateral...that he is a very gifted actor.

I just don't like Tom Cruise that much 🤷‍♂️ He's the same guy in every movie and he always comes off as this impervious character with no vulnerabilities.

The few Cruise movies I like are Vanilla Sky, War of the World and The Edge of Tomorrow (Live. Die. Repeat.), and I like him in those movies because he has vulnerabilities that get explored. In Vanilla Sky he gets disfigured, loses the girl, loses the job, loses almost everything and has to come to terms with all of that. In War of The Worlds he's kind of a dick and struggles with being a good Dad. In Edge of Tomorrow he continuously dies and has to learn from his mistakes.

I like that version of him, but most of his movies are the version of Tom Cruise that I can't stand, which I think is more like his real life personality.

Some of the stunt and physical feats I hear of him doing are insanely impressive though, so I'm not taking that away from him. I just don't care for his acting, mostly.

Don't forget "fat hands" in Tropic Thunder.

He will win one as soon as he does another dramatic Oscar-bait role, which probably won't happen until his believability as an action star is completely dried up.

he was totally a different actor in born on 4th of july though

Tom did a great job for sure. Could’ve been fatigue from Vietnam movies, voters weren’t fond of Cruise, or Day-Lewis was just better that year. 🤷🏻‍♂️
