It's 2035, predict the gaming landscape

Xbox hardware doesn't exist
Physical media doesn't exist
nVidia releases the rtx 9090 for $9090

Yakuza 15 is still stretching the long goodbye with Kiryu.
Still using the same engine too.

PlayStation and Xbox are no longer in the hardware game themselves, they are just a badge on other manufactures hardware specification to run whatever Generation of games we are on.

Majority of games will just be streamable, hardware will be optional for the enthusiasts.

The GAAS utopia will have been established for 5 years by 2035. The fleet at that time will put gen 1 GAAS to shame.

We're due for a questionable Nintendo gaffe after Nintendo's success with the Switch 2:

We will definitely be playing Mario Kart World Deluxe on the Switch 2 U in 2035.

2035 Nintendo still won't have much of an online presence, Microsoft Xbox is dead because of the powers of gamers rebelling, Sony is bordering on greatness I think by bundling VR with the PS7.

Will try to have fun with this one:

Microsoft
  • Still produce their own hardware, but more akin to the Surface line-up of devices, and more devices on Windows use arm chips.
  • UI and background resources to play games in Windows improves, but more invasive features, AI and ads worsen their OS experience.
  • Windows loses marketshare due to improvements in SteamOS/Linux, but also MacOS as Valve's Proton expands to make Windows games work on Apple arm chips too.
  • Only major growth for Microsoft in gaming is in the mobile space as Apple/Google are pressured through regulation to further open their platforms.
Valve
  • Ultimately solve the main issues holding Linux back like getting a non-kernal anti-cheat working, and gaming performance now eclipses Windows on all vendors (AMD, intel, nvidia).
  • Linux still has minor ease of use issues, but it continues to eat marketshare from Windows to be a bit smaller than MacOS, and enough software support exists to be competitive for daily use.
  • Valve releases a "console" when enough issues have been solved to make PC gaming in the living room fairly seamless, and developers start targeting it as a baseline for recommend spec on PC.
  • PC handhelds largely target Linux/SteamOS due to better performance, some companies create their own distros with custom features, and some universal ad-hoc local multiplayer gets made.
  • Valve expands Proton support to Android/iOS to run windows games on not just phones, but targets tablets as well.
Sony
  • Still the go-to default multi-plat console, carves off more Xbox marketshare, and brings their older software to more platforms (android, iOS, Nintendo).
  • Improve emulation efforts for PS1-PS2 and PSP games, but with enough horsepower in newer consoles can brute-force decent PS3 emulation, allowing them to cut-off support for the PS3 PSN store.
  • Offer a handheld option that scales down current-gen games, and has backwards compatibility with much of the entire Playstation library as a value-add.
  • Said handheld I think over time eclipses sales of the actual console box, as continued diminished returns on graphics put handhelds in a stronger value position plugged into large displays.
Nintendo
  • Continues to have success due to simplicity of their platform being 1 main hybrid handheld device, with secondary lite version for better portability + smaller hands.
  • More trans-media tie-ins that will be used to gauge interest in smaller/new IP they own to bring back with new games.
  • Nintendo will shift resources to design more games aimed purely at handheld use to secure marketshare from smartphones/tablets.
  • Likely will experiment more on their next console with more AR/VR experiences since the technology will get cheaper, more powerful and portable.

Current context

>XBOX probably leaving the market

>PS5 Failed at obtaining the fleeing xbox users like the PS4 did with the ex 360 users

>PS5 likely wont or will just barely outperform the PS4 in terms of unit sales despite the growth of the gaming industry

>sony adamant on putting their games on other platforms

>Nintendo Switch will likely end up being the highest selling game console of all time (while having actual competition)

>Nintendo Switch 2 will also very likely become a huge success

>Nintendo proves exclusives are crucial to selling hardware https://media.tenor.com/MUeDW618iyEAAAAe/cj-gta.png

>Continual growth of steam and the PC market as a whole although much of the player base are playing highly populated free/cheap multiplayer titles such as CS, Fortnite, Dota, or Roblox

>Valve potentially trying to cut into the console market

>Rise of PC Handhelds (steam deck, rog ally etc)

I'm betting my family on Nintendo monopoly in 10 years

Imagine focusing on PS5 when we'll already have the PS7 in 10 years.
Anyway, Nintendo Switch 3 (releasing November 2033) and PlayStation 7 (releasing November 2034) will basically make up the market. Not too different from today, I guess.

If Sony makes a cheaper version of their handheld which is pocketable, runs on ARM and just plays PS4 games, possibly at $199, they have won the handheld wars. Topher Topher what do you think?

Also, PS6 will support PS3 backwards compatibility. That will be huge.

Sony should stop releasing their exclusives on PC, they have already advertised their platform enough.

Complete collapse of the industry, we all dust off our 360s, our physical games still work, and we start having LAN parties again. We find out it was better this way all along.

No idea. I'm curious to see what happens when the next gen consoles launch and what their prices are. In 10 years there will be fewer boomers and more youngsters. Will the younger gamers buy consoles? Will they move to PC? Or will they just keep playing on the phones that babysat them growing up?

I guess things will keep getting worse in the AAA space while indie games and older games prove to be the way to go.

Hard to imagine anyone beating Nintendo in handheld. A $200 PS4 would be an interesting product though.

I'd love to see PS3 on PS6. That would be a huge selling point for me personally.

Apple A chips were always faster than Snapdragons

Pretty much my thoughts.
The "Indie" publishers basically have all the best games out.....if Kepler gets too big another takes it place......how did Rematch????

Not sure but it has tons of reviews on Steam, so I'd wager a lot of people at least gave it a go.

There's also New Blood, Devolver and ofc whatever anyone wants to self-publish from it's garage or home office. Out of those I'm ineterested in Faeland and Outwards 2 the most. There's also Dungeons Deep which looks to me like "Deep Down at home".

Sony has closed Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Bend, Guerrilla Games, and Bungie, they have also stopped investing in both live service and single player games due to high costs and a lack of competition, The only game they still produce is Spider Man which is now developed by a Chinese studio and the The PlayStation 6 will sell around 70 million units

Is a new Ape Escape in your 2035 by any chance?

It's all over by 2032. We'll be listening to ad jingles on the radio and Taco Bell will be the only chain restaurant to survive the chain wars.

Cloud gaming is 20% to 50% of market.

If 20% at max then 1 more gen is left for valve/ps/nin to sell 3rd party content before big publishers leave these middlemen.

Msft will sell content to everyone until cloud becomes the standard. Msft risk is being labeled a monopoly before cloud takeover of traditional platforms.

At 50% below:

Big tech if bullish will signal the importance of gaming. All middleman stores will revalue their position and future cash flows thus 50 billion for a publisher might be a bargain if you can extract money from a larger market.

Top 20 list will mostly be the same except for content to extract from china/india/sea and the risk of failings will lead to international competition from the regions above. Expect diversity in gaming but in a familiar way I.e male power fantasy but from various cultures.

Cloud at 50% will be big tech of varying scale buying content and eventually leads to few choices with multiple platforms swapping to ensure growth of IPs.

Simple core games plus ai will be a game changer.

Due to the advent of affordable free-standing holograms and breakthroughs in brainchips from Neuralink and Starfish Neuroscience, incredible advances are made in producing a true Holodeck-style experiences... and then everyone realises that we really prefer to play games sitting down using keyboard and mouse or pads on our Steam accounts (local and streaming).

my two cents:

Xbox hardware long defunct, now only third party.
Sony lack of exclusives made hardware defunct, now only third party
Nintendo killed itself with abusive pricing and repeating the same formula over and over, now third party
Nanotech cell phones rule the world, with holographic TVs for a screen and neuralink controller
Steam still relevant thanks mostly for PC´s still being a thing and on cell phones
