IT'S HAPPENING.gif: Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal is coming to Nintendo 3DS

The DS ones had a separate Championship mode that plays like what you're describing - the story is only needed for unlocking more packs. If you don't care about those, you could ignore it entirely.

This one doesn't follow the 'World Championship' naming scheme, so it's not guaranteed; however, I'd be surprised if they left it out considering how little effort it would take compared to the story mode.

Interesting. I'll have to keep an eye on this then.

Nice I've been wondering about this. I wonder as to the wait though. The show has a second season that's doing well.

Anyway xyz summon something something

Is the show still popular? Or could it be that I missed someting and Yu-Gi-Oh as a video game series has evolved and gathered a huge following.
Last time I played a Yu-Gi-Oh video game was like 13 years ago, Forbidden Memories on the PS1, haven't heard anything about the newer games. :/
Anyway, a TCG game on 3DS is always something to be interested in because the system lacks those.

Oh shoot you're right :(

lol. It's okay, the new main character's haircut is pretty awful. I haven't watched Zexal yet, but I've been meaning too.

If you want a good Yu-Gi-Oh! anime to check out, 5D's is pretty good, honestly surprising because at first, I thought the motorcycles thing just sounded dumb, but it works within their world.

Never played a Yu-Gi-Oh game.

Tell me, how does it play?

It's a trading card game - if you've ever played Magic or Pokémon TCG, it's similar to those. Basically, you collect cards, build a deck, and play against opponents. You win money by defeating opponents, which you spend on packs of cards.

There's ~5500 unique cards in the game, so there's a ton of options for deck building. A lot of the fun comes from trying out new combinations of cards.

The actual battles are turn-based; in your turn, you summon monsters, play spells, set traps and attack your opponent; in your opponent's turn, you can use the traps you set to hinder them. The aim is usually to reduce the opponent's life points to 0 by attacking (some decks can also win in other ways, such as the ever-popular Exodia card). The AI is pretty decent, if a bit slow (hopefully the 3DS's faster processor will drastically cut down how long the AI takes to make its moves).

Once you've collected enough cards to make a good deck, you can play against people online for a bigger challenge.

The advantage of playing a video game version over the physical card game is that you pay your $40 (or however much) once, and then you can unlock every card currently in existence for free by playing the game. In the physical card game, you buy cards for real money; Konami usually makes the powerful cards very rare (you might expect to find a single copy of a sought-after card in a hundred packs), so it's way more expensive to play the physical game. It's not unheard of for good cards to cost you nearly $100 per piece (and you might need up to 3 copies!).

I don't know about the show, but the physical card game is still one of the most popular TCGs along with Magic and Pokémon. We still get new set releases on a regular schedule, and thousands of people turn up to tournaments. I don't play anymore myself due to cost (see above), but the video games are a good and cheap alternative.

I got a ton of play time out of the first Yu-Gi-Oh! Worldwide edition (Stairway to the Destined Duel?) for GBA and Nightmare Troubadour on the DS, I even invested a fair amount of time playing Dawn of Destiny (I think?) on the Xbox. I just kind of lost interest as they switched to the GX and 5Ds universe/characters. I'm not saying the settings or characters were ever cool per-say, but they got downright silly and weird in those later series.

TCGs are a big investment for sure.

To be honest I'm still extremely surprised that Konami/WotC/whoever hasn't made a F2P game with micro-transactions on PC and smartphones. There has to be a lot of money in that.

is it just me or the card count kinda low? I swear ds games or even some gba games had a similar card count.

I know much of the older stuff get outdated and would never be used anywhere, but still...

And would they finally do a game where you just have all the cards out of the gate? Grinding for cards in a not f2p game is super dumb.

I quit the TCG last year, too expensive and I don't really like the community that much. I'll be happy to pick this up, the last DS game has the most playtime on my 3DS; something like 300 hours.

Wait.. This is for Japan, right?

Yep, but all the Yu-Gi-Oh! video games last generation were localised (other than the final PSP game, presumably because the PSP was basically dead by then). I'm certain this one will come over a few months later.

The official site says there are 5634 cards currently released in English. The last game released (WC2011) had 4231 cards, so this will have about 1300 new cards!

I doubt they'll ever give you all the cards straight away, since it removes the 'collectable' part of the gameplay. There's a couple of fanmade PC games that let you play any card online, though ;)

Zexal was pretty good from the 30ish episodes I watched. Starts slow like gx but it does pick up and get exciting. The best thing zexal does is it tries really hard (at least what I saw) to follow the rules of the irl game. Highlight being that monsters always get set face down in defense mode and flip effects actually get used.

I guess that number doesn't take duplicates into consideration, and it makes sense the game wouldn't either.

This says there are over 11000 cards and seems to refer only to English ones, but that includes all the duplicates (and there are tons).

last time i checked the card game it really went downhill, before it as really strategic..now is just a mess.

Yup, the 11000 counts different editions of the same card separately (e.g. the same card in the 2012 and 2013 starter decks counts as two different cards). I searched the official database without any search conditions, which only returns each card once.

As far as I can tell, playing it competitively is indeed a mess, with only one or two viable deck types. But with various new mechanics and card variety, it's still a lot of fun to play casually or against the AI.

If this is localized and has online play then I'll buy this. Really wanted to get back to Yu-Gi-Oh! but no way I'm going back to my TCG spending days.

Wow, there are still TCG tournaments? Thought it was pretty much dead or at least people lost interest because of MTG being the more popular one of the three.Good to hear!
I hope that the game has some local coop modes. Dueling with friends would be a cool thing and would be a cheap alternative to buying cards.

The DS games had co-op 'Tag Duels'. Basically, you alternate taking turns, using different decks. I wasn't a massive fan because of how slow it was - you're only playing for half the time you would be in a normal game.

And Guinness World Records says YGO was the best-selling TCG as of 2011. I don't think it's fallen off a cliff since then. I prefer MTG as a game, but that doesn't have a handheld version with deck building :P

I know a lot of people who have been waiting for a new Yu-Gi-Oh! game like this.

I might try it myself, the last Yu-Gi-Oh! related game that I got was on the GBA, lol.

Then again, I haven't actually played or watched anything YGO related since then.

About freaking time, I've been waiting for a new Yugioh game for ever!

I wonder if they're going to have 'models' for all the monster cards like they had in '08, or if they'll just use the card art like '11. I'd love to see a 3D version of all my favorite cards.
But that'd take up a ton of memory. v_v

No way are we getting full 3D models for every monster (as awesome as it would be); according to the official card database there are currently 3641 different monsters. They had sprites for everything up to WC2010 (both front and back); I don't know why they stopped doing it...

I hope this is in!

I got out of the series back when the first (technically second if you count that one that was in Japan) season, and back around 2010 I got back into the cards and it's just as fun as ever. I've been on a year hiatus, but that's because I've been waiting for this 3DS game to come out.

Effects like that are why i hate playing against dragon focused decks..... -_-

Oh god, ZeXal.

Can't wait till the game lets you super saiyan yourself and change your next card you draw into whatever the hell you want.

I remember enjoying the campaign for one of the gba games. The Egyptian theme hit all my sweet spots, but this looks like a departure from that.

last time i checked the card game it really went downhill, before it as really strategic..now is just a mess.
I looked back into it after a 7-8 yeard hiatus and yea the game kind of went to shit. Synchros was enough but this new style xyz's basically broke it

Where is my yugioh tag force vita? >:(

O-Oh my goodness.

Cyber Dragon > *
Cloudians>* lol

I've been watching YuGiOh on hulu and that show holds up. So good. I might grab thi....

Who the fuck is this!?! I demand A 90's-ass-YuGiOh game. Not this new age shit ::yells at clouds::
Not that previous yugioh series designs were so much better, but zexal looks really ridiculous imo.

Old fuddy duddies. Exodia? Blue Eyes White Dragon? That is a baby's deck now days. What next lamenting Elemental Heroes are no longer relevant?

I still have my Strike Ninja deck stored in my room, I'm sure I'm laughably out of date with all of these new card types being introduced. Last time I followed the game Light/Dark decks were all the rage.

The last time I played a YGO game was during the GX era, stopped when they started the silliness with the motorbikes (it wasn't the cause though).

Time to come back, I guess.

E heroes were the shit years ago I think they still are to a lot of people. I think they can hold there own still today
