TIME's Top 10 Games of 2004
Some publications get started earlier than others, but it's that time of year again—the first Game of the Year (GotY) is in.

TIME magazine, as part of its "Coolest Inventions" issue on newsstands now, has selected EA's The Sims 2 as 2004's GotY. According to TIME's San Francisco bureau chief Chris Taylor, the criteria are as follows: "Is it fun? How many hours will it keep you entertained? Does it break new ground? Is it mind numbing or mind expanding?" It's encouraging to note that a quirky game like Namco's Katamari Damacy made the list in a mainstream publication.

Here are the top ten best games of 2004:

1. The Sims 2
2. Rome: Total War
3. Half-Life 2
4. Katamari Damacy
5. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
6. Battlefield: Vietnam
7. Halo 2
8. Burnout 3: Takedown
9. Fable
10. Pirates!

ACK! LIARS:

Battlefield: Vietnam

Otherwise, a perfectly respectable list, especially from a mainstream mag like Time.

Edit: Oh SNAP. Nintendowned.

Pirates on 10?
It hasnt even been released yet and it already made it into hte top 10 GOTY...i wonder whether anyone from the TIME magazine has even played it...

I am completely floored that a mainstream magazine like Time, as far removed from gaming as they come, put KD on any top 10 list.

IGN has already reviewed it. Why wouldn't Time get review copies too?

Katamari Damacy is CONSOLE GAME OF THE YEAR. I agree with this news. Though it's better than the three PC games listed, too.

Indeed it is.

Yeah, but if they actually played through Katamari they would understand it's not GOTY material. Too short and not enough content. But it's fun as hell while its lasts. In my opinion Pikmine 2 or Metroid Prime 2 should be GOTY.

wow. Half Lif0wned. Not even the 2nd-best PC game this year.

For the record, Half Life 2 is the greatest game of all time. Time is crazy.

Sims 2 at No. 1? Battlefield Vietnam even in the list? Haha ok.

No MGS3, No MP2, No PM2, No UT2004 = This list sucks

Rome Total War is for old men who have La-Z-Boys in front of their PCs and have their TV tuner cards set to the History Channel all day long

I have been noticing that Nintendo is starting to fade away very quickly from the public eye. Revolution wont do jack to their image at the current rate they are going.

Not exactly, I don't even have cable ;P

About the GOTY list: there's something satisfying about seeing a slightly unpredictable list from a publication like this, for all intents and purposes it should have been a predictable one.

Shameless fanboy moment-- where's MGS3 !!~!!111!!?>? *shakes fist*

It's amazing to see Katamari on that list, but I wholeheartedly agree with that pick being in front some of the heavy hitters.

(Amazing in the sense that editors of such a magazine would even know about Katamari, I mean)

Yep.
It's just that, this year, Nintendo isn't the company that's providing said niche-title.
Them's the breaks.

I hope Katmari gets a few more sales from being on that list :)

Easily the best $20 I spent this year

That's what they said about Parappa, but it's one of the very few games I remember from the time and I could go back and have fun with it still today. It is in my special games of all time because of it's unique awesomeness. The same goes for Katamari Damacy, ICO, and other supposed "too short and simple for greatness" games, they are the ones that stick with me.

That said, The Sims is possibly the worst game series I have ever experienced.

I couldn't care less about the other games as most deserve to be there but having the Sims on top is the joke though; a fucking carbon copy of the first one with a few gameplay play tweaks and better graphics. Fuck it and fuck time, wonder how much EA paid them off -

Well-put. I too have spent about 10x the time playing supposedly too-short "niche" games like Katamari, Parappa, and Um Jammer Lammy than I have spent playing 30-hour quest games in recent years. In fact I can't even remember the last time I finished one of those. I usually get bored about 5-10 hours in, and go straight back to awesome instant gratification games like Katamari. The fact that it made the TIME list is a triumph, not that anyone with half a brain needed convincing. It should help get the word out to the mainstream, though -- I hope they mentioned the price!
