Iwata talks about the Revolution

Who cares about sales? You guys are pathetic with the sales. I don't know what the software ratio is, but I'm positive many people purchase a PSP just to watch videos (I know a few people who have no games at all). It's an unfair comparison in the end.

And really, WHO cares? Why care? You can't answer that, can you.

Yeah, thread's getting derailed, sorry for contributing.

If Nintendo launches against the PS3, I honestly think they can carve out their own niche and survive during the holidays, rather than getting reamed by Sony. Their console looks to be over $200 cheaper, with cheaper games, and a drastically different control method. They've got their entire catalogue at the fingertips to bank on as well, and you'd better believe people will be purchasing the system for that sole reason.

Not only that, but Microsoft will be into its second Christmas, and I'm sure by then Halo 3 hype will be in full force, and their catalogue will definitely stand up against the PS3...admitedly, not that it will matter much, because the PS3 will be sold out everywhere. I still wouldn't count them out despite their launch problems.

wait a minute, i inadvertantly started this debate.

and i was talking about holiday LAUNCHES anyway

not a yr later

Even if it does, and PSP still outsold it.

Now everyone stop trying to justify your purchases by saying "MORE PEOPLE BOUGHT MINE LOLZ"

So what were November's numbers, counting we never got them?

Mmmm, my thoughts on this:

It may not be as bad as it sounds to launch alongside Sony for two simple words: better games.

Better first party games for revo when compared to PS3 is a no brainer IMO. Im sure Nintendo is cooking some big things. The real question is how much is nintendo working with 3rd parties to have an all around great launch. I think they *might* pull it off *if* they really have a killer app of mario 64 proportions in the making that shows the revolution's revolution. But hey: ease of development+cheaper price+nintendo franchises+good marketing (?) could do it.

I have the GAF syndrome because I think Japan reaction to PS3 and Rev will be sooooo fucking interesting. Cant wait.

I want the Revolution earlier myself, but I can see the logic there. Finally some news, although still nothing too interesting. I really wonder about Europe. NOE already committed to 2006, I hope they can keep their promise. And Jim Merrick played with my heart when he said Europe must not necessarily be the last this time.

And my hopes for 65nm are up again. :)

Well done everyone, you've derailed yet another thread and turned into DS vs PSP argument.

I'm a semi-hardcore console gamer, but not hardcore enough that I buy systems at launch (historically, anyway). I'm always waiting for that irresistable piece of software to entice the hardware purchase.

I don't have an hdtv, nor do I have plans to own one in 2006 (barring some sort of exploding tv phenomenon in my home).

All this said, the bar is pretty low for there to be an early "killer app" to entice me on revolution because so much of what draws me to the system is the controller. A really solid game that uses the controller is going to make me grab an early Rev., while it's going to take something both beautiful and brilliant on the ps3 for me to pick it up this holiday. The beautiful and brilliant normally take a while after a system release to start showing up.

So... to extrapolate from the specific (me) to the general (the current gamer market):

Sony and Nintendo both lauch in fall: Sony has some new ip and some sequels (comparable to other console launches), while Nintendo has a few games that are otherwise pretty-basic, but really show off the interface. I can see a lot of Revs selling during the holidays to people who still plan on buying a ps3, but are willing to wait a bit for it, and are itching to try out the Rev controller.

Add in the fact that N. shouldn't have any trouble with shortages (due to not pushing the tech-manufacturing envelope to the same degree) and Sony may... as well as pricing differences, and the real possibility that Nintendo could sell to some folk who haven't bought a console in a few generations, and I don't think a ps3/rev side-by-sideish launch is necessarily suicide for Nintendo this fall.

I wonder if Nintendo will continue to advertise the Revolution like they have with the DS in Japan.

I think most of the success of Nintendo's games is due to the fact they get these big name actresses in Japan to star in their commercials. Nintendo needs to do that with the Revolution.

There's 2 ways Nintendo could launch the Revolution. Before PS3, or after. To Nintendo's benifit, the PS3 & X-BOX 360 (in being so "advanced") will most likely have lower yeilds than Revolution and so manufacturing & supplying become issues for the competition, but not so much for Nintendo since they're using "less advanced" technology.

If they launch before PS3 the possitives & negatives are:
+ could have an NDS effect in where (since it was out first) it eventually got good support that may not have come if it had launched after PSP
+ also like the NDS, this could be benificial to having games that "hit thier stride" with the platform's specific features well after launch, but earlier than if it had launched after PS3
+ striking the "wow Revolution controller" hype while it's hot (soon or sooner after E3)
- dirrectly being pitted against MS, Sony would likely use this to thier advanatge by letting Nintendo & MS busy themselves in competing with each other (somethin that happened this generation even) rather than worrying about the real competition (PS3)
- possiblility of no/less "killer apps" to sell the system at/near launch
- would be majorly drowned out by PS3 hype before it's launch and sandwhiched by the recently launched X-BOX 360

If they launch after PS3:
+ gives them time to have a well-planned/non-rushed launch, but also more (and more polished) software and even more hardware
+ having more time to have more hardware at launch means less shortages and more opportunities to capitalize on X-BOX 360 & PS3 (inevitible) shortages
+ puts pressure on Sony to launch sooner since MS will have more time on the market unchallenged...also makes Sony focus on the X-BOX 360 threat and ignore the Revolution threat
+ in the public eye, MS & Sony will be dirrectly competing (as per the 2 possitives listed above) while Nintendo will be an afterthought, which could work to thier benifit since they're not looking to dirrectly compete for the same audience anyways...the sooner the public aknowledges that the Revolution is different, the less they'll view it as "less" than X-BOX 360/PS3
- chance of being lost/forgotten in the sea of PS3 & X-BOX 360 PR and a longer GCN death drought until Revolution launches**
- stigma of launching LAST, yet having the least powerful hardware

My choice would be to launch after PS3 (as long as PS3 comes out before Holidays next year that is). The only exception may be to have the Revolution launch before or as close to PS3 in Japan so as to do what they did there what they did with NDS and really lay claim on the "slumping" Japanese gaming front.

**Outside of that...delaying Zelda on GCN and adding Revolution control to it supports the later launch. It not only gives GCN it's swansong, but also sets Zelda buyers up to eventually buy a Revolution, even if they just bought a GCN (imagine a $100 Zelda + GCN bundle later this year). They could pack-in a demo disc (Revolution advertising) with Zelda showing how you can swing the sword or fish "for real" and by the time alot of people get close to beating Zelda...BAM...Revolution launches and it's killer app is basically already on the market luring those people into playing it on Revolution so that they can battle Ganon "for real" with the new interface. This would be every bit as much of a killer app for Revolution as a launch title for the system 'cos it's deep, mature, fun, beautiful and it'll show the benifits of the Revolution remote controller on DAY ONE!

I've posted this in relation to Revolution's launch in past topics, but here it is again.

Nintendo should just ignore the PS3, price the Revolution at $400, and tell everyone to F off.

The developers will come pouring in to make games for the system.
