SINGAPORE (AP) - Martial arts legend Jackie Chan blamed Hollywood for the failure of his recent movies, claiming they limited roles for Asians and said it was time to hang up his kung fu shoes and become a "real actor like Robert DeNiro" a local newspaper reported Friday.
"It's all the same, cop from Hong Kong, cop from China. Jet Li, Chow Yun Fat and I all face the same problem, our roles are limited," said Chan, 50, referring to other Chinese action stars who have sought roles in Western movies.

"Yes, I get treated like a king over there but I'm not happy. I get frustrated when I see them doing things the wrong way but I can't say anything," he told The Straits Times in an interview.

And despite his return to the United States for the filming of "Rush Hour III," Chan said he wants to move away from similar-scripted movies.

"I've always wanted to change, to become a real actor, like (Oscar winner) Robert DeNiro. I don't want to be seen as an action hero anymore."

It will take the acting job of the century for me to take Jackie seriously in any movie like I do De Niro. I just can't imagine it.

heh Bruce Lee had to deal with the same crap, but then they didn't even want an Asian person to have a leading role in any hollywood movie.

Bruce i could undertand, he was a great actor and not just a martial arts hero, Jackie on the other hand is not a serious guy

I dont get it - doesnt he reads the scripts before he signs up to do the movies?

And doing Rush Hour 3 sure isn't gonna help.

If u want to see Jackie Act, get Heart of the Dragon. OR even Crime Story. He CAN act, not in English of course.

Given the right role I think he could pull something off. The question is, would anyone want to see it. He should take a lesson from Jim Carrey. Jim still does the goofy shit but manages to throw in a few decent well recieved roles also like Eternal Sunshine, Truman Show, and Man on the Moon even if he hasnt recieved any major award yet. :( You can tell he REALLY want it though almost. Adam Sandler looks to be going that way also, sorta, what with Punch Drunk and the upcoming Spanglish.

Of course, Jackie has sub par English pronunciation, so that wont help at all. AT leastn not in anything really serious. I think though the skill is there if he got lucky enough with a good story and premise.

This man deserves a medal! Crime Story = best.

Although I am a huge hater of Jackie's Hollywood films.. I'd have to say it's also part of his blame to do silly US movies. People say he's too old to do cool shit anymore but that's utter crap, he can still run up walls.. just not as fast as he used to.

I think he should just return back to HK and pimp his arse for a few cool movies. Surely he would have reaped enough money from all the shitty recent movies to do some nice films in Hong Kong since he essentially has his own production company now.

:( I like Rush Hour 1 & 2. Its one of my favorite Action/Comedies of all time. I cant wait for the third one.

Shaghai Noon wasnt terrible either, but Knights was very very average.

Medallion, 80 Days, Tuxedo though....may god have mercy on his soul.

Jackies level of english is what stops him getting anything other than roles where he plays himself in the west...

And lmao at the suggestion that Chou Yun Fat is in the same boat.

Anybody besides me think it would be very cool if he turned into an evil sonofabitch in one of his movies? If only to see him shoot Chris Tucker execution style.

sorta off topic:

I have high hopes for New Police Story, but it has Nicholas motherfucking Tse in a prominent role.

Also, as a side note, his ugly son just released his first album on EEG [the most popular and evil of all HK record labels], despite never singing professionally in his life.

I said he was stale -- it doesn't matter how good or bad his acting is. He's a goofball that's worn out his niche.

Jackie is too old. That's why people don't watch his movies anymore. His age is making his martial arts talent look worse and his acting isn't getting any better.

Jackie makes some good points. If any of you have seen Anne and the King you know how good of an actor Chow Yun Fat is, but he hasn't been cast in a serious role since Anne and the King in '99. And Jackie is a great comic actor when he's acting in Chinese movies.

Jackie's old Chinese films were good... not the REALLY old, "serious" ones, but the pre-Hollywood waves.

If it were a younger Jackie Chan in the likes of The Medallion, Around the World in 80 Days and The Tuxedo, well, they'd still suck hard and no one would go see them. A lot of Chan's films are blatantly flawed before they even start filming. He makes a good point about the scripts. The problem is that he's been saying this crap for a few years now, and yet, he continues to sign on to star in the same kinds of shitty films. The man has to make a living sure, but he's gone past that and for the past couple years he's only been aiding the very problems he complains about.

I don't see him blaming scriptwriters anywhere. I know it says it in the title of the piece, but he doesn't say that.

And a good thing he doesn't, it'd be very ignorant. Though obviously that descpription can go to the article's author instead.

He's right. Asian actors dont get roles other than cop or some monk from china, hong kong. Why doesnt Hollywood offer them somehting else. I am sure the audience would like to see abit more. Just dont do it the crappy way like the Hollywood Jet li movies.

Whatever. Remove the word "scripts" from my post and the entire thing stands. He's still perpetuating the very problems he complains about.

Says the man who's portfolio is mostly action movies.

It's sad to think that Bruce Lee encountered some of the same things roughly 30 years ago. But he went back to China, made films the way he wanted, and made the American studios come to him instead of the other way around. Jackie should do the same. i'd much rather watch him in a serious Chinese movie with subtitles, than watch another hokey action movie.

I never said his points and yours don't stand. My post wasn't directed at you or him at all. It was at whoever wrote the article.
