We’ve been saying this for months now... maybe longer... but Cameron has confirmed all the details I’ve written about here on the site. BATTLE ANGEL is the next film, pre-production is underway as they finish up the shooting draft, the main character will be completely created using CG, and the film will be shot in 3-D.

Awesome! One of my absolute favorite series... I hope it turns out well. :D Would have liked to see Lacey Chabert as Gally though but entirely CG will do.

Awesome, I'm pumped for a new James Cameron flick, especially a sci-fi one. I haven't read any of Battle Angel Alita though, but from what I've heard it's pretty cool.

Main character is CG? That could work...if they find artists as good as the ones who did Golem. No more matrixish CG characters plz.

I think I would have preferred live action, could still turn of well though.
You mean a real actress for the main character? The movie is live-action. She'll just be CGI, and of course, all the other special effects elements that come with a big sci-fi film.

Having the main character as completely CGI sounds like a possible test for that other movie Cameron had written way back in the day, Avatar. It'll be interesting to see if that is ever resurrected, since it was scrapped because of its immense costs in creating lifelike digital humans.

well not really...yet
Lacey Chabert as gally? I can see it.

Dont fuck this up Cameron. I fucking swear.

Man Its been years since ive read Gunnm, making me want to pick it up again :D

I thought this project was scrapped after Dark Angel came out.. Cam should just retitle the movie as 'Gunnm' (unlikely) since there's already a hundred other similarities between the Alba TV series and the manga..

I would have liked to see a live actor play the role, but Alita is entirely a robot anyway (or more machine than woman, I forget which is more accurate) so a digital actor is apropriate I guess..

EDIT: I forgot to say, this is fricken awesome news.

One more EDIT: What does 'shot in 3D' mean (if it doesn't mean just using cg for everything, a la Sky Captain/Sin City/random French and Japanese movies/etc)?

james cameron still directs movies? i thought he just basks in titanic's vile afterglow full-time.

edit: still, assuming he hasn't lost his chops, i'm always up for a new cameron action movie. even if it is based on...anime.

It means creating a '3D' image, like what he did for Ghosts of the Abyss and now Aliens of the Deep. They were/are shown as normal movies and also on large IMAX screens with 3D glasses, just like 3D shows at amusement parks and whatnot. I haven't seen Ghosts of the Abyss in either format, so I really can't say more than that. As long as it'll still look great on my television, I'm game.

Wonder how this will turn out, Battle Angel is one of my all time favorites. I think Samuel L. Jackson would make a great live action version of that bald guy.

Oddly enough, if you google Lacey's name you'll see some pics of her as Alita. She would have been a great choice.

Normally I oppose CG characters. However, the Abyss is better than CG Lucas has ever 'made'.
Well, Lucas and ILM did all the effects for The Abyss, so he 'made' that CG too. But I agree it was an awesome flick. Glad to see Cameron getting back to sci-fi action.

I'm wary of this all around. Cameron is okay, but I find his writing to be Hollywood stereotypical. And it's been a long time since he's directed a full movie. It's been 8 years since he directed Titanic, and 6 years before that was T2. And this 3-D nonsense is nothing but gimmicky.

To top all of this off, Gally is going to be CGI? Before LOTR, I'd say it couldn't be done. But they managed to pull Gollum off realistically, and it wasn't the disaster that some thought it might be. But with Gally being the main character, it's going to be a LOT more work for the animators and people are going to be much more critical. If it doesn't at least match the work done on Gollum, it'll look silly. They have their work cut out for them. I hope it turns out well, because this is one of my favorite mangas.

Umm, he did True Lies between T2 and Titanic.

KATE BECKSINDALE has RUINED every single movie she has been in. Underworld, Pearl Harbour, Van Helsing. She's bad luck and annoying to boot. Cast Lindsay Lohan.

Youre a fucking retard. Get back on the short bus and find yourself an education.

A little more info at ANN.

In 2003 Cameron confirmed that Battle Angel was in pre-production, and in the recent NPR interview he states that Battle Angel, " We're in pre-production right now on a project called Battle Angel, which is something I've been working on for several years, and we're just finishing up the shooting draft right now, we've been designing it, its a big science fiction film. A couple things that will be interesting about this project, even though its a live-action film, the main character will be done with CG animation, and the second thing that's interesting is that we'll be shooting it in 3D using the stereo imaging system that we've been developing for the documentaries."

In the past Cameron has stated that he would like to do more than one Battle Angel movie and that motorball, a central plot point of the third part of the Gunnm manga, might make its way into the plot towards the second Battle Angel movie.

All I got for the Vernal Equinox was this stupid tag
Kate Beckinsale is too old in her appearance to play Gally/Alita IMO. They need someone in her late teens/early 20s for the role.

EDIT: A CG model for the main character? Never mind.

I can't wait for this. Those of you who haven't seen Battle Angel should check it out. With Cameron helming a movie again, I expect nothing short of greatness from this.
