James Gunn Announces 'Man of Tomorrow' releasing in theaters July 2027

Gunn has been teasing this new feature for weeks, saying that his next project won't be a direct sequel to Superman, but will feature characters audiences already know from his summer hit.
"I've already finished the treatment for the next story in what I'll call the 'Superman Saga,'" Gunn told The Hollywood Reporter last month at the premiere for his TV show Peacemaker. "I'm working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today."
It's unclear what the story will be, but there was a Superman: Man of Tomorrow animated movie in 2020 that was based on a 2003 mini-series titled Superman: Birthright that was a modernization of the Superman origin story.
With $611.6 million globally, Superman stands as the top grossing comic book movie of the year, but the sum also reflects the more challenging theatrical landscape when it comes to superheroes, particularly internationally. (In 2013, Zack Snyder Superman feature Man of Steel topped $670 million globally.)

Edit: Additionally someone on Reddit pointed out we're getting Avengers, Spiderman, Batman, and Superman in 2027. Gonna be a pretty big year for comic book fans.

I loved the casting of Gunn's Superman and I thought it had some strong scenes. I feel a little mixed on it as a movie but overall I liked it more than MOS. I hope the sequel can feel like a real movie and an improvement unlike the sort of cookie cutter sequels a lot of these super films can start to feel like. Like a Raimi Spider-man 2 or The Winter Soldier, instead of an MCU Ironman 2. Something that feels like a movie and not a stop-gap with a teaser for a big event movie.

I'm excited for all of them. I really enjoyed Superman and hope the sequel involves Brainiac. I loved how they adapted him in the show Krypton

He still thinks Superman is an ensemble film. >sigh<

EDIT: Not to diminish anyone's enjoyment of it -- you like what you like. I will never begrudge that -- but the main measure of a movie's success is its box office, and ... well, Superman didn't really light it up. Sequels don't tend to pick up theater-goers, either.

I like the Superman actor. I do. I just want a non-ensemble, don't throw in the kitchen sink, Superman film.

I really really liked the new Superman movie. But I do also agree with this and is also why I like MoS more. Because it was just Superman. That's it.

He made the universe a complete mess from day one.

I thought the story would be about Superman and not a world full of superhuman characters everywhere and intergalactic incidents every Thursday like it's nothing at all.

It was a misunderstanding of the base fantasy that superman was supposed to represent. I'm out.

MFW a superhuman universe has superhumans in it:

This is interesting news, but I'm not worried about this phase. Phase 1 should be easy (maybe even phase 2) because everyone already had everything planned out and things are fresh and new, that's why the movie releases are looking to be rapid-fire right now.

My worry comes after phase 2. I need to see if the WB execs above Gunn are going to repeat Disney's history and expect an assembly line of content at the detriment of it not being good or not being worked on long enough with a cohesive vision.

So this is not Superman 2 but rather the team movie where Superman is not neccessarily the MC? It's impossible to keep up with Gunn's erratic tweets. If so, then he really decided to fuck it all and go back to the team-up formula he seems to prefer with GoTG/TSS. People already criticized Superman 2025 for being too bloated with other superheroes, diminishing Superman's role in the story. I guess anything can happen in a world of pocket universes full of shitposting CG apes and renegade superhero leagues. I don't think I care that much about Gunn's filmmaking philosophies.

I think Gunn wants to do a 6-7 year run of stuff, then peace out. I'm not sure he wants to be the Feig of DC versus just deliver up a series of fun stories with quirky characters.

Can't say I blame him, the stress of trying to pull off a decade long narrative arc over 2 dozen projects like its a season of TV writ large has got to be brutal.

As much as I love superheroes, the amount of movies that have been churned out the past two decades+ has got me feeling a bit exhausted.

Just 3 to 6 months. That's about as far behind as you'll be if you wait for streaming. That's not a bad deal unless you are affected by Fomo.
Superman took 2 months. Times gonna become shorter as we move on.

Theaters really don't offer the best experience anymore.

Wait, is he writing and directing this as well?

I don't want another one of these comedic, wacky and sarcastic James Gunn films for a while. He needs to find someone more serious at some point to do some movies.

One of the theory videos I watched believes Luthor isn't the main villain, but Brainiac is. Luthor will help defend Earth from Brainiac.
Will he be screaming out codes to complex mathematical calculations his lackeys will be typing into computers to try to stump Brainiac?

If anything it should be that vast array of typing monkeys transforming into a single entity.

He'll have his war suit. Luthor is one of the smartest people in the DCU. Also this is what happened in one of the Superman stories, whose name I've forgotten.

I'm sure there is a comic with every possible variation out there.

But, for me, when dealing with a villain called BRAINIAC, and you have SUPERMAN on your side, the last thing you should need is a guy in a suit that is just double the muscle. You already have Superman, one of the strongest beings in existence, the villain is essentially an intellect power, Lex is super smart, so the solution should be to outTHINK Braniac, not suit up to out-punch him.

I realize that would require a lot more effort in the script and just "punchy punchy" is probably better viewing and much easier to work out, but it just seems like the wrong type of team up to deal with Brainiac.

Sorta. But it's actually the plot of a graphic novel whose name I'm forgetting.
It's a good hook, if Luthor is presented as a "Earth First" type xenophobe (and probably well justified considering how many threats come from beyond the stars) who has lost his way with all these false flag attacks on his own kind, then he should be willing to team up with "pretty close to human" types to defeat a more 'alien' threat.

Doesn't really seem like Lex has any real obstacles for whatever earthly desires he has. No one seems to care that he has a pocket dimension, employs dozens/hundred/thousands of people and aliens in his pocket dimension, tosses folks in there with no due process/outright kidnapping, and is in general given free reign then it's a bit odd why he clashes with Superman AT ALL because it just creates risk for him. But he is clearly playing a long game of trying to defuse/remove superman early lest Superman eventually decide Lex is a menace to be squashed.

This plot point happens quite a bit, it was even in the suicide squad game; the comic you're thinking of is probably death of superman.

No not that one. Superman busts lex out of prison to help in defeating Brainiac... And then lex double crosses him

I didn't like the idea of Krypto before seeing the new movie. Didn't know what to think when it was announced but now I want him in Superman movies.

Ok fuck up Superman, but dont touch Batman.
I'm glad we are getting a new version for DCU. I'm not saying no to a new live-action adaptation. There hasn't been a bad solo Batman movie in my opinion.
