LOS ANGELES - Add Jamie Foxx (news) and Colin Farrell to the roster of stars resurrecting TV shows for the big screen. Foxx and Farrell will star in a movie version of the cop series "Miami Vice," which will be written and directed by Michael Mann, an executive producer on the show that ran on NBC from 1984-89.

Shooting is scheduled to begin this spring, with the movie tentatively due in theaters July 28, 2006.

Other upcoming movie updates of TV shows include Cedric the Entertainer's "The Honeymooners," Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell (news)'s "Bewitched" and "The Dukes of Hazzard," with Johnny Knoxville, Seann William Scott, Jessica Simpson (news) and Burt Reynolds.

Foxx, who co-starred with Tom Cruise (news) in Mann's hitman thriller "Collateral" last summer, will play Detective Ricardo Tubbs, a role originated for TV by Philip Michael Thomas. Farrell is playing Detective Sonny Crockett, the part created by Don Johnson.

Universal Studios, which is releasing the movie, recently released a DVD set with the first season of "Miami Vice."

Coming off a breakout year, Foxx is the favorite to win the best-actor prize at the Academy Awards (news - web sites) on Feb. 27 for his spot-on emulation of Ray Charles in "Ray." He also earned a supporting-actor Oscar nomination for "Collateral."

Foxx's next film is "Jarhead," a Persian Gulf War (news - web sites) drama due out this fall from director Sam Mendes ("American Beauty").

Farrell is coming off the epic flop "Alexander." He next stars in another historical saga, "The New World," a tale of John Smith, Pocahontas and the conflict between Indians and 17th century settlers. Terrence Malick ("The Thin Red Line") is directing the film, due out in fall.

... I'm kind of surprised Foxx is doing this. Whereas Farrell needs to establish himself after a string of mediocre films, Foxx is hot with Collateral and Ray.

And Foxx is going to be in Jarhead, which is reportedly one of the best written screenplays of yesteryear (directed by Sam Mendes, the guy who directed American Beauty and Road to Perdition), so it looks like his streak of good flicks/performances will continue. The only reason I see him doing this is because Mann is attached to write and direct.

Jesus, how can they have a release date before they've even started filming? I know it's tentative and all that...

Most big films are like that nowadays. It's a bit odd to have an exact date, but usually we'll get a month and a year.

My guess is that it won't be a huge undertaking to film and Mann, along with the studio, feel it'll be wrapped up and done well before the release date.

I'm surprised that Michael Mann is remaking Miami Vice, more than I am that Jamie Foxx is in it. It's hard to imagine that it won't seem campy and dated if it's set in the 1980s--and if it's set in the present day instead of the 1980s, then why call it Miami Vice?

If Jarhead is half as good as Anthony Swofford's book, then it'll rock.

I really don't know what the hell Mann will do with it, but I'm sure as hell it'd be an intriguing concept even if it falls flat.

Again, it was reportedly one of the best scripts tossed around in Hollywood last year. And the fact that Sam Mendes is directing should show the quality of the script. He's incredibly picky with projects. In six years he's only made two films, American Beauty and Road to Perdition, but both were of high quality.

This is, unofficially, some really old news. Like, revealed last fall news. Nice to see some official word, though.

The involvement of Colin Farrell concerns me, otherwise this could be interesting. I just picked up the box set, and the pilot (which is 1.5 hour) was solid.

Nice to see Jamie Foxx throw away that Oscar before he gets it.

HAVEN'T YOU LEARNED ANYTHING FROM HALLLE BERRY YOU STUPID TWIT?!?!

Man charley murphy would have been better. He just has that kind of vibe to him. A cool black guy oh yeah they're looking for a white blackman. Foxx is the good choice than. Farrell on the other hand needs to shut up and die.

The films he's been in leading up to his oscar nomination have all been very good, and/or solid, why would he change that if he were to win?

I'll see it if it uses this:

or this (if they're on a 'budget' =P):

(a Miami vice thread is not complete without a discussion of Ferraris =)

Yeah appearing in a movie directed by the best director in America sure is a bad idea.

Goddamn it, Hollywood -- NO MORE GODDAMN REMAKES.

Yeah, but Mann did the original series, so I think he has a right to (in this case).

Sam Raimi is ghost-directing this project?

Lucious, you can't be serious.

We all remember cinematic masterpiece of "Booty call" and "Bait".

Yep, nice SOLID roles.

Was anyone REALLY clamoring for Miami Vice movie? Not that I recall.

COllin Farrell must be making a career of doinf shows from the late 70's early 80's.

Reason why Jamie's choice of roles would change is simple. CASH!

He'll make alot more per picture with an Oscar than without. I see him going for the paycheck for a few movies.

EDIT: I really have to stop typing while I'm working. I've got nothing but a lot of disconnected thoughts and bad spelling.

Meh... they should just ditch Colin Farrell and team Jamie Foxx up with Tom Cruise again. I can't stand Colin Farrell.

Am I the only one that think Mann is way overrated? Its funny that Miami Vice is probably the only thing I have really enjoyed of his stuff..

i want it to be set in the 80s, but actually be a SERIOUS movie (at least as serious as the tv series). I hate this trend of taking old series (Starsky and Hutch, Dukes of Hazard) and turning them into parodies.

Jarhead as in this Jarhead?

Or is it something completely different?

Sounds good, Mann's films have been great lately. Now that he's remade his TV movie/pilot L.A. Takedown as Heat, and is working on Miami Vice for the big screen, he should give his "Crime Story" series a movie adaptation too. Damn, that was a classic underappreciated show.

Agreed. After Alexander's release, America has shown that it has no interest in womanizing midgets as its movie heroes (I liked him in Minority Report though).Tom Cruise is probably the only actor that I can watch in anything and enjoy it.

"Colin Farrell...so I was talking to my wife Trixie the other day and she thought you weren't a very good actorrrr, and I agreed with her....now why Colin....why might we say something like that?"

What's with all the negativity? I mean, it's Michael Mann.

That said, I really, really hope that the mullet is only for a small part of the movie.

Hmm, actually, I think Colin Farrell could be a mean Snake...

Anyways, what's up with the mullet. Does the film takes place in the 80's like the series? :p

As others have pointed out Mann produced a few eps of the original. He directed Manhunter too (an adaptation of "Red Dragon") in the early 80s which has kind of a Vice vibe to it.

Did anyone else think Miami Vice during that one sequence in Collateral where Fox and Cruise were driving around to Audioslave's 'Shadow Of The Sun'? That was SO Crockett and Tubbs going down the strip in the black Spyder, to Phil Collins 'In the Air Tonight'... such an awesome scene. No dialog, no nothing. Just two bad-asses getting ready to take care of business.

I knew that: I actually watched the show when it came out. It still doesn't make any sense to me, though, since the work Mann did after Miami Vice (Last of the Mohicans, Heat, The Insider, Collateral, and even Ali) is better than Miami Vice on every level.

Unlike Mann's later work, which is aging really well, Miami Vice is an '80s relic, as much as songs by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. I don't know--Heat was the third try by Mann at essentially the same story (first two were Thief and L. A. Takedown), so it's not necessarily the case that remaking old material is wasted time for him. Still, that mullet doesn't reassure me.

I said this WAY back in February... guess what? I think I'm right.

Stealth and now this... ugh.

Way to throw away any critical acclaim you may have built up.

I call it "the Cuba Gooding Jr. effect"...

Although, I will admit that Stealth looks better than Snow Dogs.
