New Dredd movie in development. Directed by…. Taika Waititi

Not really a fan of this as I also disliked thor 4 but people that think that Dredd is always dark and gritty don't know the comics.

Some of the stories and events that happen in Dredd's world are very silly and sometimes very dumb. So if they lean into that campiness then he fits very well.

Personally would love to see ab adaption of the Pitt or necropolis.
I was going to say, Dredd can be pretty stupid, it was meant to be satire from the start, mocking the idea of Judges and a Fascist government and those who would force it...and then got sillier.

Sure, there are many serious arcs and characters, Judge Death is there, but this is also the setting where you randomly had male pregnancy being invented because a future mob boss forced a guy to marry his daughter but she didn't want to get pregnant so the guy got desperate enough to force scientists to find a way to make him pregnant instead.

A fact that is commonly taught in school, that the mafia led to male pregnancy.

They bring back Karl and they are half way there (at least as far as a movie goes)

He is a fan and gets dredd. ❤️

Like was mentioned. Some stories have a natural craziness to them (fatties that compete in eating contests. Then the story continued years later, during a food shortage where the same completions ran. But this time they ate furniture, bikes and bathroom fittings !!! 😬😂). The graffiti story that became the ongoing sky surfer storylines. There are loads to pick from 👍

This is a tough sell though. As great as the last dredd is. And as an original reader, who fell by the wayside many years ago, I really felt that they captured the essences of the character of dredd. The general public pretty much totally ignored the movie on release. Sad. As not only was it a great story, on a limited budget for what dredd is, but it was truly one of the best 3d movies

Maybe a cursed earth story ? Or a dredd quest to a 'less expensive place' to film or create ?

It bombed

They also considered this a bomb at the time and Furiosa took 5 years longer to make due to legal work around how WB tried to write it off

Did you mean Edge Of Tomorrow? ...also bombed.
Just cause movies bomb doesn't mean they don't hit cult status and get a sequel greenlit. The fury road movie was not a bomb; if it was they wouldn't have fought over the rights for so long.

Dredd 2012 set a really good foundation for a series. It was a shame it didn't perform as well as it deserved to. I used to read the comics, still have an original copy of Judgement on Gotham somewhere actually. I guess TW could get closer in tone to the comics but the 2012 vibe is still where it's at for a movie at a modest budget imo.

Im Not No Way GIF

Ever since Taika went to Hollywood he became straight trash. One hit wonder. Gonna avoid this incarnation of Dredd like the plague.

C'mon guys, all you lot saying No, Do not Want... Fuuuuk dat, I'll take any new Dredd be it a movie, TV show or FFS won't someone make a bloody game the IP is owned by a game company yet they ignore their biggest asset that is absolutely ripe for all manner of games... Anyways, look Taiki made one of the best Marvel movies in Ragnarok and that mix of drama, aesthetic AND comedy, afterall anyone that reads the comics will know that megacity 1 is full of ludicrous humour so if he can channel Ragnarok and not the godawful Love and Thunder, we could end up with a Dredd that's more masses friendly than the 2012 version which just didn't click with the masses as fucking idiotic as they where, so this is a fucking win in my book tbh and when it comes to Dredd, I'll take any shot at turning him into the cultural icon he fully deserves..

Also no Urban, no deal

I've never seen any of this guy's movies but I feel like I'm living in crazy world when people say that Dredd isn't supposed to be funny.

The comics are bursting with dark, cynical humour on every page.

95 dread is campy fun.

It's not perfect but it's decent enough, and it looks great. It's also far more comic accurate than Urban's overrated movie.

95 absolutely nailed the big MC1, it was exactly how it was portrayed in the comics, 2012 Dredd nailed Dredd but the city was lackluster, I don't know if it was a case of the style and look they where going for or a case of simply not having the budget to do it properly

This is going to be terrible. At least they can't unmake the good Dredd movie.

I mean, the Stallone movie is actually a guilty pleasure. I think it has its' moments, but it is still not a great movie. The Karl Urban movie still holds up. Even though it seemed to have shared a lot in common with The Raid.

Has anyone ever proven that Wario64 is not an robot that fell through a time portal from an alternative future timeline?

*Record Scratch* Yes, that´s me. Do you want to know how I lost my helmet? It´s actually a funny story.

I'm tired of pretending that it's not an enjoyable flick. The whole vibe of the movie is awesome and the ABC Warrior is SICK. Armand Assante stole every scene he was in.

Also Taika Waititi is a hack. This movie will blow.

His Twitter account is run by multiple people iirc.

He's on my Steam friends list and plays a ton of games. Lately he's been playing Forza Horizon 5.

You sure? Dredd taking off and walking around without his helmet so casually already seems to put it higher in blasphemy territory than the Urban one. :messenger_winking_tongue:

I liked Ragnarok, and was meh on LNT.

B tier director directing a B tier character. Primed for Netflix.
I can't believe this guy's IMDB page, he is rumored writer for StarWars and Flash Gordon lol

I was always impressed by the massive presence that Wario64 has had on social media over the last decade, and often wondered to myself how he managed to pull it off. I guess Wario64 has a small network behind him.

Yeah people flip out over the helmet thing but ultimately it's a fairly trivial detail, and I say this as a huge fan of the comic since the '80s. Of course the movie would have been better if he'd kept it on, but I can understand Stallone insisting that people see him.

The fact that the movie adheres fairly closely to the pulpy black comedy of the comic (which Dredd 2012 does not) is far more important than Dredd not being 100% in costume imo.

Right? It was disappointing at the time compared to stuff like Robocop and Demolition Man (which both jumped on the sci-fi cop dystopia satire bandwagon established by the Dredd comic), but it's still a damn entertaining movie in its own right, and in retrospect, a very lovingly crafted and impressive-looking movie. And yeah, the ABC Warrior is sick.

I remember watching Judge Dredd as a kid and being completely flabbergasted to see this guy stand up to Sly and manage to shut him down...
I never could have thought someone could be even more manly than the manliest man on Earth :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Anyway maybe this time waititi will manage to subvert expectations by making a good movie faithful to the lore of the character ?
(of course not he is a smug performative douche)

Never understood why that movie got shit on. It was on par with Mortal Kombat 1995 as far as execution and quality IMO. It's wasn't close to Street Fighter which was actual slop cinema.

Cliffhanger (can't wait for part deux)
Demolition Man
Judge Dredd

Stallone had one hell of a run in the early 90s. Similar to Nic Cage in the late 90s with The Rock, Face/Off and Con Air.

Best Dredd movie is easily the 90s one where it actually has interesting sets and fun. Hope it's more like that rather than the boring serious dark less vibrant one from 2012.

Nailed it. People gush about the 2012 film but megacity one looked like a normal ass city. Boring as fuck. Paled in comparison to the 1995 film.

The helmet coming off, Rob Schneider, and simply the fact that we'd been waiting 15 years or so with high expectations. But time has been kind to it I think. We've seen far worse comic adaptations since which have been better received. Compared to modern comic book movies it's a masterpiece.

There's almost nothing in the 2012 movie from the comic book besides the costume, the scowl, the gun, and the fact that Dredd goes around shooting people. That's really it. Anderson is nothing like comic Anderson. Mega City One looks like Milton Keynes. The authoritarian fascist aspect of the movie is played for shock and gore rather than laughs. It's Dredd in name only.

I'm looking forward to this (obviously). Waititi is hit and miss and seems like he loves sniffing his own farts but I don't understand people saying it shouldn't be silly and should be dark and gritty instead. The comic only became 'gritty' in the late 80s like every other comic and the Dredd strip is fundamentally a comedy satire and a new film should totally lean into this (if Robobcop was just a straight action film and not a genuinely good satire as well then far fewer people would still be talking about it now). I want them to revel in the amazingly daft stuff the citizens of MC1 do that has come true (to an extent). I want an Orangutan as mayor, I want Smoke-a-toriums and Palais de Boings, I want Simps and bat gliders and Muties and Kleggs and Gribligs. Go absolutely crazy with it.

Taiko Waititiriti (I'd like to buy a fucking consonant) who made Thor into the goat/stage production/cancer tragedy/girl Boss fever dream?

Ha.

Haha, even.

Yeah, Armand Assante is a CLONE of Sly? At least they could have gotten a more cut guy. Though he delivered the scene chewing lines, which I guess is what they wanted.

Should had Dolph Lundgren in there and just played with perspective to make him seem as short as Sly :P
