Jan 12 Figure Four Daily: Bryan Alvarez and Todd Martin

Figure Four Daily with Bryan Alvarez and Todd Martin returns today to talk all the news in wrestling and MMA including a preview of UFC 142 in Rio, Strikeforce from last week, Raw Monday with the debut of THE FUNKASAURUS BRODUS CLAY, a new bet, Smackdown thoughts, Mark Henry, how Rock has changed wrestling forever, plus Todd's trip to the ROH tapings

PWG preview of FEAR is up. Can't wait for this baby.

Togo vs Generico should be great. As will the deaths of the Young Bucks. Seriously, fuck the Young Bucks

Everyone should watch this. PWG > the rest.

Goddayum at Roderick's Chaos Theory backdrop. Also, good to see B-Boy back. I'm really looking forward to the Hero/Mack rematch, and the main event obviously (although, damn some of those chair/trash can shots looked unsafe).

I should watch Impact Wrestling.

Needs a Brazzers

I just finished watching Steen Wolf this week, and I couldn't agree more. They're not bad in spot-fest type matches, but they definitely overuse the same damned move too much. I don't mind a spotfest every now and then, but I don't need 40,000 superkicks in one match!

Now seems like the perfect time for WWE to get Cody Rhodes and Zack Ryder to swap shows

Maybe after the rumble and Rhodes finishes his feud with booker. Rhodes can feud with Goldust leading to mania on RAW and Ryder can kill the ratings of another show.

while they both have the mid card titles it would be easy to do it now. plus the IC title >>> the US title

Awesome, wake up in a crappy mood and get some Attitude era wrestling to cheer me up. Thanks for the stream Sunflower! :D

Hey, I wake up and hear a little praise! This makes my day better.

Regarding the Attitude Era...last night a show came on from some gargantuan arena, which held over 40,000 people, and it looked like an enormous blanket due to how many goddamn signs there were. And the signs were great then - people had their favorites, so it wasn't the same old sign every time. Man, people were just so into it...between Raw and Nitro, what a great time for crowds. Popping for everyone.

Yeah, considering the IC title is supposed to be the 2nd tier title, it should be on RAW, not Smackdown.

Yeah totally, there's so much apathy in the WWE these days, on both sides. I think the Punk promo that got everyone so excited was beecause it was the first thing in a long time that didn't feel so damn... corporate. Back in the attitude era they were a billion-dollar company but it still felt dangerous and felt like a bunch of nutty misfits doing whatever the hell they wanted, McMahon and creative included.

Yeah, the problem is that WWE immediately thought "oh shit we have attention, HHH get out there!" :(

Now with this whole social media thing, it's all TWITTER TWITTER TWITTER.

I wonder what would happen if they made NO Mention of twitter on an entire show, would we notice and praise the lord?

That's one of the reasons the Punk promo was so excellent, and when they dropped the ball, it felt like they dropped it from a huge distance. They stopped it in its tracks...and sold it to us. This is why the anti-Cena shirts aren't selling like hotcakes - it isn't organic. It feels like we're being told to buy their merch for it. Natural instinct is to recoil and not do what you're told when it feels wrong, or feels contrived, and the WWE is trying to sell us rebellion.

And then of course the crowds can't be bothered because the passion is lost. They are almost a cast now instead of a crowd. Listen to this fucking crowd now on your stream, it's not rocket science to get that. Here's a guy the crowd absolutely love, and here's a couple of assholes for him to bounce off.

Stone Cold just did the beer truck hosedown. Vince is amazing in it. Just amazing what he's doing. Even for all the bitching at the time about him injecting himself into these storylines, he's one of the best and showed people how it is done.

Yeah, when WWE shoves it down our throats, we don't want it at all. Take a look at when the attitude era was taking off. Half the reason it got so popular is that you had D-X being general degenerates, and then you had Austin talking shit to his boss and beating him up. People lived vicariously through that, it gave us something to cheer for.

Now though, you don't have that. You have Cena who is all about respect and all that shit, people are getting sick of it but the WWE is telling us we SHOULD be sick of it now which just doesn't work.

It's always weird seeing these iconic segments actually in context. You see the various bits so often, it's cool when you watch them as part of the main show.

Really hard seeing Owen and knowing what's coming soon on your playlist :(

It doesn't help that Punk, ever since his return, has kind of felt like a shill for the WWE from then on. That kind of drove me away from it as well, I have to admit. I know, I know, he's the ring Jesus but...I don't want to call it a sellout but it sure feels like it sometimes.

Yeah, many people love to see the Attitude Era through rose-tinted glasses, but some of it was REALLY bad. The same show that had Mick Foley winning the World Championship also had Mark Henry's mother watching him have sex with...I think his step-sister? There was a lot of bad shit.

Is it true they gave him that gimmick and made him do all that shit so he'd quit? lol

Yeah people forget there was a ton of real stupid shit. God awful even.

Just watched the return of Stampede Wrestling from November (this was the one where Teddy Hart was talking about having trained animals participate in the matches and have height-raising turnbuckles controlled by live electronic votes from the fans in the crowd - Ted's not even on the show, lol).

The show's pretty damn awful and I haven't heard the majority of guys on the card, obscure even for the Canadian indy scene it seems - however, the main event of Harry Smith vs Fit Finlay is pretty good and by far the best match on the card. Also, there was a real nice Owen Hart tribute during intermission - check it out;

Holy cow, I can't wait to see this. When I heard about it, it sounded like the most insane thing.

Don't get your hopes up - I should point out that none of the crazy things Ted said would be on the show are present, it's just a normal (pretty awful) Canadian indy wrestling show. Good main event though.

Incidentally, I was just looking through all the old videos on my megavideo upload folder and found this awesome Natalya match from SHIMMER shortly before she joined WWE;

Nattie Neidhart vs Sara Del Rey - (SHIMMER 10/22/06)

So he works hard for a decade to finally get to the top and you think he is a sellout for achieving his dream?

Why watch wrestling then? Some day your favourite underdog is going to be a top guy. Sellouts!

Has nothing to do with him being at the top - has everything to do with the change in tone there's been. That's all. Shilling t-shirts, all that...not as bad as Zack Ryder, but it just feels different. It doesn't really matter anyway what I think, I mean hell, I'm just some mark, yknow?

Shilling t-shirts in as much as he wears his shirt to the ring?

Nah, in other avenues. I doubt they have too much of a choice of what shirt they want to wear - when you're a top guy, you're pretty much required to wear your merch anyway.

I dunno, things have changed for me. It's not a big deal what I think, I know he's a lot of dudes' favorite. He just ain't doing it for me.

I wouldn't say a lot of the attitude era was bad. I notice that the only thing I really hear when people talk about the lows of the era has to do with Mark Henry. What else do people consider bad? I would add the artist formerly known as Goldust.

Bossman and Al Snow was horrible, and... I also hated how they handled Hawk in the 2000s.

In what other avenues? I'm not trying to seem indignant; I'm genuinely curious.

Radio interviews (but this is to be expected, as you gotta play by management's rules) video appearances on shows that aren't WWE shows (news, etc) and Twitter. He may have stopped too, I don't keep up that much anymore, but WWE definitely capitalized on the popularity with the merchandising and he was just doing his job. It's just a personal hangup of mine. :)

I agree - in ring he's still pretty awesome and is consistently having great matches, but he's lost that fire on the mic in recent months, probably due to how the storyline has progressed since MitB. It really cannot be overstated how much WWE messed up the whole Punk angle. It should have been ENTIRELY about Punk vs Vince from start to finish, none of this HHH crap, no Kevin Nash.

Hell, I'll say it - Punk looks like a sellout.

He still does good work in-ring, but there have been a few matches that reek of 5MOD.

They've neutered his microphone skills, had him lose to and praise the doofus son-in-law, and he's painfully attempting a recreation of SCSA/Vince with Johnny Ace.

He still seems pretty damn happy about it, too. The talk about change is laughable.

I'd say he is very close to the point of becoming what he rallied against, if he hasn't hit that mark already.

I hated the Light Heavyweight division. They really bomb on that, but they did redeem themselves with the Hardcore division. 9 People won the WWE or WHC title after they were Hardcore Champion.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU HATE!

I have said it before, and I'll say it again, 2009 was the best year of Punk's WWE career.

A lot of those hardcore matches are really memorable. Watched one last night though, and man, I can't watch unprotected chairshots like that, comfortably, anymore.

True, that dog kennel match was soooo bad. But Bossman had some funny skits.
