Cole was being heavily produced by Jim Ross back then. Ross was on the headsets practically telling Cole what to say word-for-word. Beyond the Mat shows Ross backstage at Royal Rumble '99 going over stuff with Cole.

And now, I wonder who is in his ear? Surely Cole must second-guess a lot of the shit he's told to say. Anal bleeding...sigh.

I thought they messed up the Big Show because he first came to the WWF to save Vince McMahon and then turned on him. Something similar to Bret Hart scenario. :-/

Man, I remember probably the episode before they called him Big Show, they were trying their damndest to call him the Big Nasty. It's fun to remember when nicknames didn't always take off.

Cole and King have much a similar chemistry that JR and King had, which Cole being the face play-by-play guy, and King being the heel color guy who was still pretty likable because he never milked his bad guy status to the point of annoyance. Now everyone actively HATES Michael Cole, X-Pac heat style, and King sounds like he doesn't even give a fuck anymore. As a I type this message, all I can hear is the commentary, and its like night and day for what these two do on Raw nowadays.

O man. Big Nasty, Big Money, Big [insert name here]. I remember Paul Wight last night on Nitro. He came out to the nWo Japan theme and lost. I had a feeling he was leaving but it was how he left the WCW is what got me.

I don't think Vince or whoever is in charge of that realizes how much a good commentary team is needed to engage the audience at home. If they don't give a shit, why should I?

When JR would call things you got excited because he was!

Exactly. A good commentary team could make you care about the stupidest shit.

Like right now, the commentary is helping so much to sell this Big Show titantron thing.

A challenger appears!

Leave Spellbinder alone. I used to watch USWA on Saturday mornings and he was kickass. :P

I wonder what percentage of this so called wrasslin thread actually watched USWA?

Dick Togo vs El Generico. I really want to see that match. I haven't watched PWG since Human Tornado was the champion for about a month.

You've missed out on tons. PWG has grown leaps and bound since then. The undercard consist of great matches involving a lot of homegrown SoCal talent. I love me some Willie Mack. 2012 will be his year.

Like a few weeks ago when Kane set the ring on fire and pulled Cena in... commentary was silent. THANKS GUYS

JR would have been going apeshit crazy.

Or just this week with Kane beating up Cena. Dead fucking silence :/

Way to sell that backstage brawl as important and crazy, you guys

Respect this.... WOW, the storylines are great.

I think some of it is due to there being the 'anything can happen' mindset. Clear villains. Clear 'heroes' so to speak. It hung over the entire show at the time, and you never knew what was next. Just a perfect storm of talent, promos, and believability.

I really like it a lot more, looking back at it now, than I did when it was happening.

That's true about commentary. It's really one of my biggest complaints about the WWE. As you've all said, commentary can either make or break a segment. Cole & King are just not that good together, no real chemistry.

Thinking back to my favorite teams of Gorilla + Ventura and Gorilla + Heenan, today's commentary pales by comparison and, in turn, the new stories and matches don't interest me as much.

Seriously, I really didn't care for WWF during this time period. I did switch back and forth with Nitro. I was a huge fan of the Nation of Domination, D Generation X (Triple H lead) and D'Lo Brown as the European Champion.

Imagine how intense J.R would have made the Ryder tire changing, maybe he could have saved that segment.

"Oh my gawd King, Ryder he's...he's still changing the tire! Kane could be here any minute! They've got to get out of there! OH MY GAWD its Kane! SOMEONE GET SOME HELP! SOMEONE GET SOME GODDAMN HELP! Oh, my lawd did you hear that, that sickening thud of Ryder, a human body landing on that board!"

Good commentary can make even bad segments work

Watched the tapings for today and will be watching it tonight for my boy D Bry. The amount of on air time he had was refreshing!

Just watched Smackdown and I'm liking the development on Daniel, hes opening promo was good, and I really liked the end, wonder in what direction they are taking this angle.

Also what where they chanting at the end?

Why did the Mean Street Posse go after Mankind when the Big Show refused to join the Corporation. Mankind posed no threat to the Corporation. I have to say that was bad booking.

Also, Val Venis vs Billy Gunn. They both have very similar gimmicks. Both are label as tweeners. Some things worked better in the past then they would do in the future.

EDIT: It appears that Val is the heel in this match.

I think I'm a fan of D.Brine the psuedo heel, after this weeks Smackdown

D.Brine to Big Show last line of the night: "You Bastard".
Also how any of these reporters could mistake a WMD for a shoulder tackle are beyond me.

WWE should give Gina Carano a few million, and put her up against Beth at Mania. I feel that is the only way in the whole world I could care about the Diva division right now. The division has been mostly dead since the Trish/Mickie anyway.

The problem is they have the talent and the Divas for engaging stories, but its just so start and stop and random.

I mean honestly.. they could turn Beth/Natalya into a compelling feud leading into Mania, if they actually had put any effort into their friendship
