Are any of you guys the only wrestling fan in your circle of friends?
I was out with a bunch of mine, and constantly catching myself making WWE references.
One of my buddies wasn't drinking tonight and I said 'Living that CM Punk lifestyle, hey?'
That was like, one example out of many.

My best friend is still into it, in fact he came over on Friday and we watched Smackdown and played WWE '12.

None of my other friends watch it though.

I have one friend that likes wrestling still, although we never watch Live anymore (we used to stay up, and watch PPVs from time to time). Now I Sky+ a few things, and watch them at a later point with him.

My great aunt (80+) still watches wrestling though (she watched it since the early 80s), so I can chat with her about it. Currently she hates Cena (he is too nice), likes Danial Bryan (reminds here of older wrestlers), but hates Punk (bad attitude, too many tattoos). I guess two out of three ain't bad!

I'm the only one who still watches wrestling. My brother and I used to watch, but both of us stopped at the same time a few years back, and I'm the only one who came back. I kept up with major developments in the interim period anyway, while he didn't.

He still likes wrestling, I think, he'll often watch at least the Royal Rumble and be interested in hearing some news from me, but he has no interest in watching himself.

I just watched some weird WWWF/NJPW/Don King cross promotional event from 1976 - the main event is Antonio Inoki vs Muhammad Ali (15 rounds of UTTER NONSENSE, as Inoki spends pretty much the entire time lying on his back trying to kick out Ali's legs, presumably because he didn't want to stand up and get knocked the fuck out), but the opener is really interesting, Andre the Giant vs Chuck Wepner (the guy who was the inspiration for Rocky Balboa) with Vince on commentary and Monsoon in Andre's corner. They start off and Andre's size is just too much for Wepner, as Andre easily swats away his punches, locks in his arms and just manhandles him about the ring. Andre keeps trying to go for a belly to belly, but Wepner uses the ropes to stay on his feet. Come the second round Wepner tries to dance away from Andre, but to no avail as Andre runs him into the ropes and hits a big knee to the mid-section that lifts the dude right of his feet. Round 3 and Wepner manages to get some offence in as Andre tries a single leg takedown but Wepner backs into the ropes and just beats on the back of Andre's head, which pisses off the Giant who gets up and headbutts Wepner loopy, picking him up like a rag doll and military pressing him out of the ring and to the floor. Some Don King associate looks super pissed off and tries to get Wepner back on his feet, but Gorilla Monsoon starts shoving him about. Meanwhile, Andre is declared the victor. More Don King guys start harassing Andre and then Wepner gets back in and sucker punches Andre with a big right which has no effect on the Giant whatsoever. Really strange match, but unlike the Inoki/Ali nonsense both Wepner & Andre gave you the belief that it just might have been real, even if the whole thing was a complete work.

I know like maybe two people that are still fans? But I rarely even talk to them.

Funny enough, it was my sister who got me back into wrestling (after the Attitude Era kinda ended, I quit watching for a few years).
She doesn't even watch it now. My dad still watches occasionally, but often ends up asking me what happens.

The Ali/Inoki fight is kind of well-known for its post-fight effect on Ali's legs/mobility, (good piece on that event by the Guardian -- http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2009/nov/11/the-forgotten-story-of-ali-inoki -- ) but I never knew about that Andre stuff. Sounds absolutely terrible.

Yup. He beat Christian for the title in his first match.

I miss the Light Heavyweight Title. :(

The problem is the WWE had a lot of American lightweights which is not nearly as exciting as Mexican or Japanese lightweights.

The Light Heavyweight division didn't work because the WWF were so focused on developing a story between Taka and Brian Christopher, that it didn't work. It worked for the WCW Cruiserweight division because they put together multiple matches a night, that had no story to it. That what TNA did with the X Division until they were picked up by SPIKE.

The crazy thing is that there's now more American light-heavyweights who can hang with their Japanese & Mexican counterparts than ever before. If there was ever a perfect time to make a concerted push for a light-heavyweights/cruiser-weight/juniors division, then now is that time. But pity it'll never happen. I can't have been the only one who tuned into WCW over WWF purely because of the cruiser-weights, and it's just a shame that Vince either doesn't recognise or doesn't care about that demographic.

Wow, thanks for the link, I never knew about the history of the bout or the effects it had on Ali, absolutely crazy, but I can see why Inoki resorted to his tactics given the restrictions in place. Here's a bit about the Andre/Wepner fight;

You sure weren't, Bootaaay. I'd watch Nitro first and foremost for the cruiserweights.

The only person in my circle of friends that admits they like wrestling is one of my friends who moved back to the east coast, and my cousin, who lives here in Austin. Funny thing is, I didn't even know my cousin was that into it.

I was probably at my lowest interest point ever in watching wrestling last year. I wasn't that interested in WWE, would regularly miss entire weeks, and never watched TNA. I was pretty much just keeping up with ROH and Shimmer, but my cousin started texting me on nights when he'd be watching, so I had to start watching again regularly to see what he was talking about. Turns out, I got him into wrestling years and years ago, and all this time never knew he had become a fan.

Your not on that. I turned it over because WCW had more variety in the Cruiserweight division. When the division first started, you had a ton of Luchadors, NJPW greats and a few Americans.

Awesome. How did Lawler get so terrible nowadays?

Lawler openly admitted a few months ago that he doesn't even like being a commentator and would rather compete in the ring.

"I still enjoy performing in the ring as much as I ever did. I didn't get into this business to be a commentator; I don't even really enjoy being a commentator. I just happen to be able to do it where people can stand to listen to me."

Yeah. What they honestly need is a nice mix of foreign and American light heavyweights, but they're all to small for Vince and his love of big men.

Also, the WWE would rather you believe that Beth Pheonix is completely helpless against a man smaller than her but this same small man can totally take on a musclefreak like Cena or HHH and win the heavyweight title.

A cruiserweight division would be cool but it'd be hard to get it over when you have Rey Mysterio and Evan Bourne competing against Show and Orton.

I'm not sure I understand your point. You want cruiserweights to be depicted as less capable?

No, no, I think what he's saying, Sam, is that it's hard to get the smaller guys over when they're stuck going up against Show and Kane and Khali and Mason Ryan and Orton all the time. Or, in other words, when they're competing against each other far less when they're going up against bigger, tougher guys and routinely losing to them, half the time in squashes.

Dragon Gate USA champion Johnny Gargano reportedly injured his back in his match against Ricochet last night at the last ECW Arena show in Philadelphia. Gargano was taken away from the arena in an ambulance and colleagues are said to be worried for his health. No other details are yet available.

I really hope Gargano is ok. This didnt sound good at all. How did he get hurt? I want able to watch the event last night.

I don't think him using Rey Mysterio as one of his examples particularly supports his point, and the last time I remember Evan Bourne being squashed it was at the hands of CM Punk. Indeed, I've been pretty impressed with Daniel Bryan mixing it up with The Big Show and holding his own for the past two weeks.

The main thing I miss about WCW is the cruiserweight division. Every week on Nitro during teh first hour they'd have some amazing cruiserweight matches.

Nor was I. I saw someone in the thread say Gargano looked to be hurting bad. What happened?

I didn't see the exact spot where he got injured, but it could have been any number of spots. The match certainly seemed a bit off and there were more than a few blown spots, so it could easily have happened early on in the match and I just missed it.

Hope Gargano's OK though, as he really looked badly shaken after the match, just lying there on the mat until some help managed to gingerly lift him from the ring. I thought it was his leg at first and they were just waiting for a stretcher, but once he got to his feet on the floor he was really badly favouring his right arm, so I thought it could've been his shoulder, but the fact that it's being reported as a back injury leads me to believe he caught a nasty stinger.

Actually, thinking about it, he could've been hurt when Ricochet hit a springboard DDT on the apron, but Gargano didn't land on his head as Ricochet's momentum flipped him all the way round and on to his back, then Ricochet followed up with a Death Valley Driver on the apron that looked pretty nasty.

How would that not be logical?

If the guy could beat Cena or HHH, why couldn't he beat up Beth Phoenix?
