I was thinking of getting a monthly snack box to sit down and try with the kids for fun. Anyone tried those? There is a few of them so I dont know which one is best, tokyo treat or japan crate?

If you tried it, how was your experience? Fast delivery? Good customer service?

I have no idea what you guys are talking about lol

Im not that much of an anime fan, it's just that I think it would be fun and cool for me and the kids to sit down and try these weird snacks . Also my daughter loves pokemon and other anime so it's a plus

Don't mind these jerks.

Can you post pictures of these snack boxes. They sound intriguing.

I haven't tried one of the monthly snack crates before. I just buy what I want from sites like Jbox, and Asian Food Grocer. I might look into one of those monthly snack ones just to see what I get.

JBOX candy and snacks

Asian Food Grocer

Tesseract Tesseract this one is on amazon, looks like you could grab the first one at a discount and cancel the sub:

If some of you are interested and end up actually ordering one, we could make a thread and show off the stuff we received from our different loot boxes.

Just an idea Im throwing there

Beats me. I just eat them in Japan. Their snacks are godlike.

You don't have an Asian store around your parts?

Feels like me at the stations/trains/vending machines in Japan, random box of fun...yes please. Love the presentation of those surprise bento boxes. Bringing that to snacks as well? I think you have convinced me to give them a run with the family for some Japanese fun at home during lockdown.

There is in china town in montreal but I try to avoid montreal like the plague now. Im in the suburbs and montreal is a mess because of different issues like parking and accessibility

It can't be THAT bad can it? Well, I'm not there so I'll take your word for it. It'll probably be cheaper than a lootbox and you can pick what you want, but I also see the appeal of a curated experience.

You pick one from the two you mentioned and I'll order the other one for some months mate. Could take a little longer to Australia but hey all in good fun.
I actually went and ordered this one from amazon

I really want to give tokyo treat or japan crate a try but because of covid they ship express with DHL and it charges me an extra 12$ u.s to do so so I was bummed. When it gets back to free shipping Im jumping on it

Well last time I went to shop there and pick up something for my daughter it took me 45 minutes to find a parking spot, I told myself never again :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Good gravy that's ridiculous. Is it because you don't want to pay for parking?

Just google maps chinatown parking lot. I'm sure there's something you can do.

No, not at all, I would gladly pay for parking. The mayor there went bonkers and converted a lot of streets into bicycle paths, like on each side of the streets and got rid of all parking spots. Theyre even planning on doing this on big streets with a lot of stores and shops, some are even closing because of it. They even moved bus stops for them. Thats just one issue, there's work being done on streets all over the town because it's summer. Not an enjoyable experience going there.

Never got one before but my mates wife is Japanese and would regularly bring treats back when they visited.

Weren't for me but my missus absolutely adored them. Just not into sugary stuff (the ones were very sweet)

There aren't parking lots or parking structures? I looked on Parkopedia, and there seems to be options.

Yes there are and usually full during daytime since a lot of local employees use those and have monthly passes. I work night shifts so going there on evenings is not a possibility.

All in all I gave up on montreal, I go to work there on my night shifts since I have my parking spot at work (hospital) and that's it

Ok so I am supposed to receive this box in a week. Ill create a thread if people are interested and then we can all share our weird snacks we receive and rate them/discuss.

Went with 3 months prepaid Japan Crate > Original. Probably arrive for September fun. Subbed to the thread and will post pics and basic reviews when arrives.

Anything in particular to look for?
That really depends on what your store has access to. Personally, I love these soy sauce senbei things, but I've only ever seen them in Japan and not in any Asian market in North America. What I have seen lately in North American stores, however, are brown sugar boba milk tea popsicles from Korea that are frickin' amazing.

I use to get Japan Crate for awhile and they weren't bad but the truth is if you have any kind of Asian market around you 95% of the stuff that comes in the box you can buy already in store. That being said you usually got some nice snacks but imo it's really not worth the money especially when you get stuff like green tea kit kat which you can go to 7-11 and buy lol. Usually the box will come with a booklet that talks about the items you get.

Yeah I suppose you overpay for having the luxury of having them hand picked and delivered to you. I suppose I can live with that. Thanks for the comment

Plus, shopping in person sucks right now with Covid; there are advantages to curated delivery.

I mean if you're looking for something fun to do with your kids then by all means you'll have a good time and honestly some of the snacks are pretty good. From my perspective Japan Crate had a lot of stuff you could buy now but like you mentioned it is kind of nice to just have them delivered to your place. I guess I was hoping for some more unique stuff but even if you go for one of the boxes you and your kids will enjoy themselves. Sometimes they will come with a neat extra item like a keychain or something that the kids will probably enjoy. Japan Crate delivered fairly quickly and always on time (I'm in Canada so it took a little longer) but it certainly was a pleasent experience I have no complaints on anything like that. It's also worth noting that your first order with Japan Crate will usually come with an offer for an extra medium box so you will usually receive a bonus box for free which is also nice.

For sure, I mean if you haven't tried one before it's always worth exploring something different. I know Japan Crate also expanded and offer different types of specialty crates which might be worth checking out. Personally I've only ever gone with the basic one.

The last loot crate I did was Halo legendary crate series for this -

It was nice to have some things I couldn't really buy anywhere or in game add-ons else along the way. Hopefully the Japan Crate is more unique stuff I can't get in Australia over my local Asian stores/supermarkets.

That is a pretty kick ass crate and yeah for me it was more about the uniqueness of the items. Don't get me wrong you'd get the odd thing you definitely won't find and I mean it also depends where you live. I mean an Asian store or market is very common around here but if you live somewhere that doesn't have those kind of stores it'll certainly be fun to try the snacks out. I would say the strangest thing I got in one of my boxes was a bag of plain chips that was covered in black pepper it was literally the worst thing I've ever eaten,I couldn't even eat them because it was making me sneeze every time lol. You can always check out their site to see past crates and what not for me it's been several months since I subscribed so I'm not sure how they've been recently.

I've bought a few of these for my family, starting in April after it was clear the lockdown wasn't going to be quick. Consider doing it through Amazon or eBay instead of a crate.

Anyway, whichever you decide on, It's fun. You don't get a lot of candy by weight, but the good crates send you a color brochure that explains all the different ones, and you should get some decent variety. OP has the right idea. It's a nice "event" for the kids to enjoy.

Good Japanese snacks that I recommend:

- most wasabi flavored chips and snacks have been top-notch. No specific brands to recommend.
- Hi Chew. Amazing chewy fruit candy. Intense flavor.
- Omaibo. These are like giant Dorito-dusted corn cheetohs.
- Dragon butter chips (pictured below)
