Japanese Crew - I Need Your Help

anywhere in the world and you wanna go to Japan? hehe, it's nice and all but c'mon there are better places in the world to spend a week or 2 :lol

well, to be honest, if i could live anywhere in the world, it would be tokyo or manhattan. im all about the skyscrappers, and having thousands of people around me in every direction i look.

i love the atmosphere. i totally wouldn't mind going to New York, but this is gonna feel more like a super vacation. Egypt was strongly considered for a bit too.

Living in Japan is a whole different ballgame. It's fun as hell, especially if you live in a big city (Tokyo, Osaka). Great place, tons to do. For a couple weeks I just can't see it. But that's probably because I've lived in Japan for a while too. Probably the same reason NY doesn't seem like a big deal, because I grew up so close.

Egypt, would love to go there. Just might one day, visit a friend I made from there (met in Japan actually hehe)

I wanted to go to Egypt. I went to Israel back in '94, and my parents took a small side trip to Egypt (for the casinos), but I was way too young to go.

update.

i have a friend that's willing to go on this Double Dragon Challenge with me. we're going to take advantage of those feature filled internet cafes, and we're bringing a tent, some sleeping bags, and our beautiful bicycles with us. we're gonna make it just fine.

A TENT in Tokyo? Where are you going to be able to use it? :) And BIKES with you? (Isn't that going to be a pain in the ass at the airports? Also where would you put them when you are going around the city? You can't just leave them out AFAIK, and you sure as hell aren't going to be able to ride them around everywhere. Nor do you need them with the train system there) Maybe you need to rethink your plans and try somewhere much more rural. That's not going to work.

Having been to both cities, let me again say that you need to go to New York first. Not to mention it would probably fit your budget a lot better, and you won't have any problems with the language barrier.

Have you ever been abroad before, Johnny? No offense, but it's not sounding like you know what you're going to be in for.

^^
What Lyte Edge said.

Why don't you just look into renting bikes while you're here, at least? Hell, you could prolly buy and resell for less than the cost of bringing them on a plane ?!

Tents and bicyles? Have you even looked at one of those Japan travel guides or anything?

You're insane if you think that's gonna fly. You'd be wise to rethink your strategy. :)

wtf? why are you ignoring all of the useful advice from people WHO LIVE(D) IN JAPAN and instead cracking crazy theories!

bike -- not necessary! if you're going to go to tokyo take the train.

tent? stay at hostels, as was already suggested.

MIND BOGGLES

have you ever been out of your bedroom before? seriously, you're coming off like someone 1000% clueless about traveling in general.

You can't go backpacking in Japan - not urban Japan, at least. That's like backpacking through, I dunno, Detroit. There's absolutely no place you could set up a tent, ever. Maybe with the homeless people in front of the Diet building, but...

Also, keep in mind that trains aren't free; in fact, intercity trains in Japan can cost as much as plane tickets. As a foreigner you can get a 1-week rail pass for about 28,000 yen ($275). Which, if you ever want to leave the city you see in Japan, is more or less a necessity. (More: http://www.japanrailpass.net/eng/en02.html)

In any case, I suggest you either go to the library or invest $8 in a travel guide and read up on the country. You can visit Japan cheaply, but not for $10-a-day, and you need to know what you're getting into BEFORE you get off the plane.
