I've just spent the weekend ripping CDs to my computer, and I'm trying to copy them across to my linkstation external drive. Most are fine, but any with Japanese filenames are not working.

I tried renaming them in Tag&Rename, but that doesn't like them either.

Is there any easy way of renaming them in WMP or iTunes? I can't find anything in WMP. All I really need is to have simple filenames - "01 - Track1" would be fine, as XBMC and WMP show the title from the ID3 tag.

Not sure if it'll do exactly what you're saying though. Are the id3 tags in Japanese? Otherwise you can just use that to rename the file based on id3 tag?

Tags are in Japanese, so are the filenames. Tag&Rename can't even do a 'set filename based on tag' using something stupid like track number only, because it can't actually read the file - because of the filename.

Its annoying, because I'm sure I checked that the linkstation handled Unicode filenames before buying it.

You can't name them in Japanese? Have you set your system to read amd run native Japanese programs and text?

They already are in Japanese. Using XP with Japanese language and IME installed.

I just ripped them using WMP and that picked up the ID3 tags and named the files the same as the titles (plus track number). This is from Japanese Audio CDs

I'd prefer not to have to rip them again, but even if I did, I'm not sure how flexible WMP ripping is

I've just checked and I can't even burn them to CD with Nero or make a zip of them using winrar. Seems like nothing other than XP can manipulate them.

Can you read the file names in Japanese? If you can, then I'll see about what' sgoing on when I have the chance. If you can't then you need to set the language to Japanese for non-unicode programs.

Odd, I haven't had any issues with burning or transferring myself. I'll take al ook into it.

In XP, I can do everything with the files.

I can go to detailed view and see the ID3 tag info in Japanese, the filename in Japanese - everything. Same in Windows Media player. I can click and rename in XP manually.

But if I try and open the file in tag&rename, it doesn't like it. Same with winrar and Nero. Very odd.

First, try setting Japanese to the default language for non-unicode programs... its kinda buried so you may not have done it already.

Next, try using Winamp to rename the tags. Winamp has no trouble with unicode tags, and it has a very simple tag editor. Yes, it is the long, boring manual way of doing things, but it should work.

Its not the tags, they are fine. Its just the bloody filename stopping me accessing them or editing them.

I had a similar problem for Chinese text using Sonicstage, everything just came up as questionmarks, though in windows and media player it was ok. Changing the system language worked for me. There's a microsoft application that lets you change the language of individual programs rather than having to change your system language, which is pretty useful. Start->Control Panel->Regional and Language Options->Advanced->Language for non-Unicode Programs->Japanese

It shouldn't screw anything up, but I think programs with multiple language support can detect this, because sometimes when I install new programs the install dialog is in Japanese, as well as the program itself after installation.
