So J-Gaf what are some your favorite J-Christmas music?

Here's one I really love: Tommy Heavenly6 - I LOVE XMAS:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbWxk6Uv90E

WTF is Sony Japan thinking pulling the official video off youtube? Seems so dumb.

Just to chime in a tiny bit, when The Brilliant Green's contract with Sony expired, Tomoko Kawase took that band and her Tommy personas to Warner Music Japan, that probably has a lot to do with it.

Yeah, I still have to listen to MO'SOME TONEBENDER. I heard great things about their new release.

The year is coming to a close and people usually do their best of so lets listour top Japanese tracks of 2012
Top:
Anything by Leo Ieiri. She's probably the best new artist in Japan IMO. All her singles were great and addicting to listen to.
Then in no order:
M-flo- All I want is you.
Shota Shimizu-366 days
Sakanaction -Dancer of the night and Flower and I.
Utada Hikaru- Flowing cherry blossoms.

Gosh, what an amazing thread. I'm not into the modern J-Pop/J-Rock scene like you guys are, but there are some real gems here and great posts too. As for me? I got started with Casiopea and T-Square, so I'm a ways away from the subject at hand.

—But I've been listening to a bit of standard repertoire for a few days now. This includes Kazemachi Roman (Happy End), Solid State Survivor (YMO), and Fantasma (Cornelius). Three great albums in a row, and there's plenty of backstory to each of them. I read a series on Fantasma's epitomization of Shibuya-kei, and some fellow hosts an article on KR's packaging. For someone new to the Japanese mainstream, this is all great stuff.

One question: is this thread good for J-fusion/jazz in addition to the usual suspects? That's more my line of interest, though I can certainly dig some of the music already here.

I read the Cornelius article the other for a paper I'm writing. Funny you bring it up. Site has lots of great information on Japanese youth culture

I had no idea what Shibuya-kei was or how it came to be until I encountered said site. So yeah, a great primer for future investigations.

Oh, right: Fantasma is glorious.

So I just found out that Mass of the Fermenting Dregs broke up. D:

I'm running out of good Japanese rock! Could I get some recommendations based on some of my favorites? I used to find a lot of this stuff through blogs that don't exist anymore, so I'm out of the loop. Some of my favorite Japanese rock bands are:

Ogre You Asshole
Mass of the Fermenting Dregs
Boris
Chatmonchy
Midori (who also broke up, weh)
Noodles
Number Girl
9mm Parabellum Bullet
The Pillows
Bugy Craxone
8otto
Tsushimamire
Melt Banana

I really like a lot of female-fronted bands, but it's not a requirement or anything. Is there anything newer that I should check out?

Awesome, thanks for the links! I totally forgot to put Veltpunch on my list, I have one of their albums and it's great. I think I'd heard Straightener before and just not known who they were, really like those songs. Will definitely pick all this up.

Out of interest, do you know of anything interesting going on in the punk/noise/etc scene right now? I think Midori and Skirt No Naka are the most recent things that I've really latched onto.

Nope sorry, I'm not a big fan of punk so I can't help you.

Bought some Supercar, Syrup16g and Triceratops today by the way. Some great stuff.

I am not the most adept in the current punk scene but these are bands you should know about none the less

Cowpers

Spiral Chord
http://youtu.be/Ehei9wd5SEo

Kuru Kuru Garden

Tacobonds

Bloodthirsty Butchers

The Rice Panic

Discotortion

Copass Grinderz

Envy

Qomolangma Tomato
http://youtu.be/JCn8csSfLnk

The Rice Panic is pretty fresh and it's female fronted so definitely check the rest of their material out. Tacobonds are also pretty young and has female backup vocals and guitarist as well. Kuru Kuru Garden is female led but they broke up very recently.

SEX+Y is a band that's really similar to skirt no naka but it's extremely hard to find their material because of their name. Here's their myspace

Last edit: Forgot about AFRIRAMPO

This concludes my post

If you go back a page or two you could have found something.

Female fronted band + Pink = Who The Bitch

Bought some Supercar, Syrup16g and Triceratops today by the way. Some great stuff.

Which Supercar material? The only one I own is Futurama and I think that is fantastic.

(I think I do own others but I have it had teh chance to delve into it)

I love Ahito Inazwa but Vola really fell off after Halan'na-ca Darkside.

To be honest, Principle (which is the latest one) is the only Album I have listened to which I quite liked it. Yes, ther are some weak songs, but overall, I thought it was solid.

If thier previious ones are much superiour, then woof.

I mean we can disagree on Principle, it's ok.

Though if you liked that you should like their earlier works which is superior, IMO!

well not really...yet
Totally hooked to Supercar and Lost In Time right now. Amazing bands.
If you've yet to listen to Highvision (Silent Yaritori :bow) and Answer, the best is yet to come with Supercar for you imo.

And like I posted earlier, get the B-Sides album, and don't forget their double album release OoYeah! and OoKeah! (their most shoegazey album).

Yumegiwa Last Boy off of Highvision...sogood.gif

Yeah, I am planning to get their previous releases since they have been quite for some time. Principle, as I said, was enjoyable. Can't wait.

Also, the new ONE OK ROCK single is called 'Deeper Deeper / Nothing Helps' and will be released on January 9th. Looking forward to it.

Nothing Helps is the DmC theme song.
Also, Deeper Deeper is composed by Ryota (Bass) and Tomoya (Drums). Can't wait.
