So.... Kawatani and Kachou are forming a vocaloid unit LMAO It's called 学生気分 (Gakusei Kibun)
Their first song is a cover of 小説家みたいなあなたになりたい from Gesu's latest album

I actually can't tell if the male voice is a heavily modified Kawatani or if they're using the Fukase (vocalist of SEKAI NO OWARI) library. I think it's the latter? Wouldn't be surprised since they're like BFFs

Hey guys and girls.

Any Japanese bands that sound like 90s alternative? A grungy sound. Something like Nirvana or Failure. Looking for some honest gritty rock without Japanese quirky-ness. Something more moody and real. Doesn't have to be new either if you can't think of any modern bands.

Hmm... I just sampled a few songs (music video ones cause I can't find any songs on Spotify by them in my region). This is pretty close. Not miserable enough haha, but I'll try to branch out to some of those inspired bands to see if I can find something more to the sound I'm searching for.

Good tip anyway. Thank you.

This moving/transition for HMV sucks for orders. Had an order from last week that I was hoping would have shipped last Monday but didn't ship until today. Looking forward to it finally being here this week. (one thing popped up on iTunes US so I just bought it there for now...)

Oh that's a lot of examples. I'll get to that later.

----
The album I ever bought from Japan (while I was in Japan) was The Strokes "Is This It". The reason being that I was living in the States at the time and due to 9/11 they replaced the song New York City Cops with a different tune (the other song is good too actually). However all the international versions had the original tracklist and also the iconic album cover of the hand in a black glove placed on a bare ass.

You might like CASCADE - Kill Me Stop

They are sort of grundge mixed with new-wave

Also maybe Thee Michelle Gun Elephant - Birdmen

Most of the stuff Tomo Furukawa does is fairly grundgy (I guess) too like: Guniw Tools - It's Usual His other bands are Nookicky and Shilfee and Tulipcorobockles but they are stranger sounding

Catching up on some recent stuff:

Kenji Ozawa released a single back in February which was his first new music in about a decade I think, but the music video for it recently came out (featuring some special guests). Dude sure can write a pop song.

I've really been enjoying the new cattle EP. I'm in the midst of an addiction to this sort of well-produced 90s power pop lately. If you like THE PATS PATS you may like this too.

Asachill deserves more attention. Nothing groundbreaking, just quality Japanese electropop. Closest comparison here would probably be Yun*chi.

Fansub of the MC from the recent BiS niconico performance. Don't miss Momoland's moving speech.

Kinda wish they re-recorded old tracks from their indie releases. A lot of them could use a very small update to be as good as their recent stuff.

Kinda related, Ikoka from Gesu is starting an acting career. Wonder if her and Enon will star in a drama/movie together someday lol

I found out about a band called The Collectors last night while researching The Mods and damn they're perfect for me. I fell in love with Groove Globe the second I heard it. And then to find out they did a recent ending theme for Dragon Ball Super. I love their look, their sound.

E-Girls news.

E-Girls will have 11 members
Dream is going to be disbanded and the remaining 3 members will not be part of E-Girls
Ami is graduating from the group and going solo
Shizuka going to focus on DANCE EARTH Party
Aya is going to work behind the scenes
There is no leader for E-Girls
The goal was that all the groups are on equal footing now.

Dream is my least favourite E-Girls subunit, so no big deal, but I think they will have to get more vocalist in the other subunits at some point.

Wow. I looked up some of their songs. This is good.

By the way is that Suzu Hirose on the album cover?

Glad to hear you like them. Kawatani Enon (the vocalist/leader) is pretty much a genius, dude has 3 bands going on at the same time (indigo la End, Gesu no Kiwami Otome and Dadaray, though he's just writing the songs for the latter) and all of them are freaking amazing lol

And no, it's a girl named Takiguchi Hikari, from an idol unit called drop (never heard of them before)

"The Floor" is great, love their stuff. Kinda wish they were somehow on Spotify haha. I might go about purchasing their mini-albums somehow though. Really like em.
