Jay Z and Linkin Park collaboration: Collision Course

Has anyone heard this yet? I'm an admitted (yet not proclaimed) Linkin Park fan, and while I don't really like rap, I really like this. For those of you who haven't heard, MTV got the two groups together, and got them to merge their top songs. So you've got (Jay Z / Linkin Park);

Dirt Off Your Shoulder / Lying From You
Big Pimpin' / Papercut
Jigga What / Faint
Encore / Numb
Izzo / In The End
99 Problems / Points of Authority

Personally, I think Dirt/Lying and Jigga/Faint go together very well. The songs basically consist of Jay Z singing one of his songs to Linkin Park music (while linked together with the BG music to Jay Z's songs at certain points), and Jay Z also singing some of the lyrics to his own song, which Chester and Shinoda sing key parts of their own songs too. As I mentioned before, I don't like rap too much, since the main part of music I usually like is the music itself and not the lyrical content, and when a song does feature singing which I like, it's usually singing-singing, and not talking-singing like most rap.

However, I really hope other major rap artists hear this stuff and decide to try something new, because nothing flows smoother than someone who can rap too, and when you get it coupled with more than just a beat, it fucking rocks. The CD has those 6 songs and 6 live versions of each song. It's worth it if you like the music, though I think it may be tough to find people who like both Linkin Park and Jay Z on this forum.

Oh, and a search under 'Jay Z' turned up nothing, but if this is old, I'll lock it.

I got it a few days ago. One of the Jay Z parts is kinda hit and miss, but the rest is pretty damn awesome. Thanks for reminding me *puts CD in CD player*

I love Jay-Z and I always found Linkin Park catchy, I liked the mix. It's awesome watching Jay-Z live too, anyone see this concert?

I really like 99 Problems/Points of Authority/One Step Closer, but the rest are ok. I find it really amusing that the rapper guy from LP avoids any references to being black or use of the "n" word, though.

Oh, by the way, anyone who jumps into this thread just to add JAY Z and/or LINKIN PARK SUCKS won't be able to post much longer. Make it constructive if you want your opinion to be heard.

As for the topic, what other rap/rock combos do you think would mesh as well? I'm not too familiar with many "good" rappers (since I personally find little variety in the genre itself), so I could throw out names like Kanye West, DMX, blah blah, without really knowing if they'd go well with other bands. But as for the rock side, in regards to those who have songs which would work well like Linkin Park's did, I think you could find at least a couple tracks from;

Audioslave, Muse, Rage Against the Machine, and the late Sum 41 stuff.

Granted RATM sort of already is close to that fusion.

get eminem and rage against the machine in the studio together, tell eminem that ja-rule just called his daughter a whore and you will probably have the best eminem song ever made.

Can I get away with my Aerosmith/Run DMC remarks. They're awesome!

This track alone is what made me go out and pick this CD up. I had heard a remix combining these two tracks and a little bit of Korn I think, and was floored. It was amazing. Unfortunately, the actual track on this CD, while great, doesn't quite match up to the first remix I heard.

Reason being, is that this CD only seems to go half way. As Mike mentioned, it's mainly LP music with Jay Z rapping over it. Which is incredibly cool, and again I am amazed how well it all matches up. But there is little to no playing with this in reverese. Yeah, Big Pimpin/Papercut is using the Jay Z beat, but that's really it, and unfortunately thats one of the least inspired mixes.

To be completely honest, what I was really looking forward to was a not just more of Jay Z's beat over LP rock, or LP rock with Jay Z's beats, but more an actual mix. Throw in some guitar riffs over that Big Pimpin' sample. Don't just pump up the back beat in the rest of the LP music... actual use some of the samples. And just because you start a track in one style does not mean you can not jump back and forth. Mix it up. Start off with the Jay Z beat and then throw in the LP lyrics, then mix it up and drop in more of the rock with Jay Z, or hell it doesn't even need to be that cut and dried, but you see what I am getting at.

Still..

All that said the CD rocks and points to MTV for getting these guys together legitmately.

I'm really not into rap at all, but Jay-Z's The Black Album kicks ass. I love it. It really pulled me in. I'm also a casual fan of Linkin Park. I mean, they're catchy and fun although not exactly high art or anything, obviously. I've liked what I've heard of this Collision Course album, and I'll be picking it up at some point.

The Black Album was really my introduction to Jay-Z, outside of hearing "Big Pimpin'" on the radio, but am I correct in that he'll supposedly not be releasing any more? That's disappointing to me.

Holy shit that rocks. I actually just found a faily amuzing site that got some decent mixes, (The Eminem vs No Doubt is woth it just on principal.) However that mix on that site is not the on I heard earlier.. it had Korn in I'm pretty sure. Damn.. never gonna find that mix now.

Oh.. the link to that amusing site. al-b3.com
(Word to the wise, kill the song that loads up.. I hate embedded music.)

EDIT: I'm a fucking idiot. I kept killing the Jay Z vs LP track on that site because I was sute it wasn't the track i was looking for. I just let it play all the way through, and what do I hear towards the end? Some Korn thrown in. At least I know I wasn't crazy for thinking Korn was in that mix. Unfortunately I was way off in how I remembered it sounding. Oh well... nevermind, back to my little corner of the world.

Of anyone I think would match up well with Linkin Park, I think it'd be DMX. Maybe it's just cause they're two of my favs. :p

I'd love to hear a Pushing Me Away / Slippin' mix. :p

Sonic Youth and Cypress Hill? SLAYER AND ICE T?

We need MORE OF THIS, people

I was gonna say, if you find this new album at all interesting, there's loads of other collaborations since Public Enemy and Anthrax hooked up. (not that they were the first, just that a bit of a flood started after that).

That Living Colour/Run-DMC song was a dissapointment to me though. Best on Judgment Night is Del/Dinosaur Jr.

Also Bionyx (Biohazard and Onyx), not sure of the spelling anymore.

Yeah, Numb/Encore is also my favorite. I picked up this CD/DVD today, awesome stuff. I hope more rappers and bands do this MTV Collision Course stuff.

Those two songs are my favorite. It is cool that MTV set this up, I hope we see more collaborations like this.

I'm kind of a Linkin park fan, especially their live in Texas CD is great I think. However, I don't like rap, hip hop and all that stuff at all.

The live tracks on the collision course CD are ok, mostly because of the raw guitar sound. I don't really like the normal tracks, they're just too soft or something> I definitely don't like the rapping and Jay-Z's beats. I hope the next Linkin park album wil be more like their first album and not more towards the rap/hip hop style.

Track down a copy if you want to hear some INTERESTING rap/rock experiments.
Jinx, there's a reason why you and I get along so well. :)

This soundtrack is incredible - my personal favourites being:

Helmet/House of Pain - Just Another Victim
Sir Mixalot/Mudhoney - Freakmomma
Teenage Fanclub/De La Soul - Travelling (I think that's the track name, anyways)

To be honest, the only track that drags even a little bit is the FNM/Boo Ya song, but even that isn't enough to kill the rest of the CD. My favourite movie soundtrack EVER.

That Faith No More/Boo Ya Tribe song rocks... it's the Living Colour track that's the weak song on the album.

And the Helmet/House of Pain song is good, but it's as if they were never in the studio together the way they did the song.

If Mos Def hooked up with a good rock band I'd say it would be the best hip hop/rock collaboration ever. Mos Def's lyrics absolutely destroy anything Jay-Z could spit.

I'm sorry but as soon as the songs start they have me laughing. I thought they would pick songs off meteora.....weren't all these songs done on Reanimation much much better?

Have you heard of his Black Johnson project? Couldn't imagine a better lineup of musicians.

Will Calhoun (Living Colour) - Drums
Doug Wimbish (Sugar Hill studio musician and later Living Colour) - Bass
Bernie Worrell (Parliment) - Keyboards
Gary Miller/Dr. Know (Bad Brains) - Guitar

I've heard Mos refer to some "Black Jack Johnson" several times on his new LP "The New Danger" but I didn't realize it was an actual project. Interesting. Is this something that has been released already or is it still in the works?

Heh, I clicked on this thread to see what kind of chaos might've arisen from the haters, and came away with a used copy of the Judgment Night soundtrack off Amazon for a quarter. :lol

First album is done as far as I know, just hasn't been released by the label, they keep delaying it for reasons not known to me.

www.mosdefinitely.com may still have real media files and mp3s of their live performances.

at least some good came of it. What a great album, one of my favorite soundtracks.

as an aside, the same guy that did that soundtrack did the Spawn soundtrack. He tried to have lightning strike twice by having rock bands team up with electronica acts. Didn't really work, but it did introduce me to Incubus.

I really can't stand Jay-Z, but he would crush whoever that crappy rapper is in Linkin Park. No fucking contest. Whatever track they make, it'll be so lopsided. I wonder what the Jigga nation thinks of this collaboration.
