Jeff Gerstmann on Halo Collection: "Move mouse to look around", PC Version Confirme?

Fantastic input. 10/10

No PC version planned right now. Not impossible, but not scheduled right now.

But that makes no sense if Jeff saw a screen during the behind-the-scenes showing that mentioned mouse support before a controller was plugged in...

Unless it was the original Halo 2 PC, it wouldn't make sense that someone would take the time to put in a menu message mentioning a mouse, right?

It would explain why Halo 3 Steam turned out to be nothing.

Plans change. They could have had a version up and running, in pre-alpha/beta testing using Steam before development priorities shifted. It can happen. Steam is pretty chill about letting you use their service early in the development process.

Releasing it on PC would be smart. They'd generate a ton of goodwill, hook people on the franchise then keep 5 exclusive for the Xbone to drive console sales.

More importantly, the MS Surface needs help. Advertising playing Halo on your surface could really be a boon.

It would make no sense for Microsoft to do this unless they don't give a shit about the Xbone, but it'd be great for the consumer and sales in general. I'd buy it.

It makes perfect sense for the PC version to hit next year. Hey will have already sold as many copies as they need by next year on XBO. By letting PC gamers enjoy the older games, just maybe they get new Halo fans that will buy an XBO for Halo 5.

So it would be a smart bet on your part.

No, it'd be dumb as hell because he'd have to wait five years before you could be banned, whilst he could be banned at any point within those five years if he's wrong. It's not even likely that either of you would remember by then... or you'd already have been banned of some other less drawn out ban bet that you placed in the meantime.

Of course, this stops it from being a stupid bet on your part, even if what you were betting on was unlikely to happen.

It's fine, I can wait until next year. I'm probably already gonna get an Xbone when Halo 5 hits, so I'd wanted these on PC in the meantime. Hell, even if it's just the regular versions of the games and not Anniversary for 1 & 2, I'd be fine with it. I just want to be able to play some Halo online on PC where my friends are at, you know?

I find it odd how cagey Microsoft is about PC versions of Xbox games though. I mean, you're getting paid either way, so what gives? I might be wrong, but I think MS even gets more money per copy of windows sold than they do for Xbox Ones sold...

Edit: I almost thought the Windows 8 notification that played near the end of the Twitch stream of the MS conference was supposed to be hinting at something, but no.

I'm seriously fine with Microsoft fixing up the Halo 1 and 2 ports, while giving us an excellent port of Halo 3 and ODST. Steamworks, dedicated servers, perfect mouse controls, etc.

Let the XBO have exclusive access to the Anniversary titles, just give us the raw games and we will shut up about it.

I'd get it if it was a Windows 8 store exclusive even :(

Microsoft seems to have abandoned the Windows 8 store for Steamworks.

I suspect there is a "PC version" but I do not believe it will ever be released, or at least not until after Halo 5 comes out. MS needs to move Xbox Ones badly.

It probably has something to do with the fact that an Xbox One gamer that buys an EA game after Halo also generate money for them, whereas if that same person buys that game on Steam because MS was busy making sure nobody required their console, that money goes to Valve instead.

And that's ignoring Xbox Live fees, accessories, ad revenue etc. I'm constantly surprised at people wondering why MS wouldn't just dump everything on Steam. Why do you think the Xbox One even exists? Shouldn't they just put everything on Steam and PS4 instead?

EDIT: Also, they're not selling copies of Windows off this. Anyone interested is already running Windows.

Well, Xbox division wouldn't have to bleed as much money for Microsoft :P

It's Bayonetta all over again. Now THERE'S an internal PC build I'd love to get my hands on

I don't need the Anniversary-treatment or new graphics, just put Halo 1-3 on Steam and I would be a happy camper.

I'm not getting an Xbone to play games I've already played.

I understand that. I'm not asking for PC exclusivity. I don't think it's crazy to ask for a PC release of a franchise that has had previous PC releases.

Besides, I doubt the Xbone/PC audiences overlap that much. Having a Steam release only opens up the audience further.

Oh I know that the mobile game got released on Steam. I guess typing "I'd put up with GFWL" would have been a better way to show how desperate I am :P

I know very (very) few Xbox gamers that don't also use Steam. Anecdotal I know, but in my experience the overlap is freaking huge. Plus, you only need to take a quick look in basically any thread where an Xbox game is confirmed to be coming to another platform to see the effect it has. "I was going to get an Xbox One, but this was my main reasoning, so that saves me $400" etc. People aren't going to buy the console for multiplats this time around, so they better be sure to offer exclusive (truly exclusive) content, else PC+PS4 becomes the correct option for pretty much anyone not completely adverse to PC gaming.

And as I've mentioned in the past when this topic has come up. We don't even know if these releases really do bring much additional revenue in. Someone like myself that games on PC as well as consoles will often pick up the cheaper PC version of the game instead of the console version if it's made available... often at a much lower price if not something I'd buy day 1 (Steam sales), and then 30% of that sale goes to Valve rather than the 100% that MS gets if I buy the game digitally on Xbox. I'm not sure this expanded audience is worth the trade-off to be honest.

Well at least someone got it :P

I specialise in 'obvious'. :)

Honestly, outside of GAF I see the exact opposite. And I kinda thought the sales figures and number of people playing Titanfall on each platform was another indication of that. But I guess all we can do without hard numbers is throw anecdotes at each other till our arms get tired. Regardless of if there is or isn't a PC release, or what the reasoning for or against it is, I don't think they would have announced it at their Xbox branded conference.

All the Halo games have been in the Steam database for a while so its coming. Just a matter of how late it will be from the Xbone version.

What is the point you are trying to make here?
That the availability of a PC sku of an otherwise Xbox One "marketing exclusive" doesn't necessarily impact the Xbox One sku's sales. At least not to the point where we could point to the PC sku existing as the reason for the Xbox One sku selling poorly or more poorly than would be expected. It's really the only Xbone+PC title that I could think of that would show something similar to Halo being on PC and Xbox One at the same time.

Steam v. Origin v. New IP v. Established Huge IP makes it not really comparable, now that I think about it some more. I can edit it if people would like.

Seems like a fair point to make to me.

It's not a useful data point either way really, because we can never tell how many PC players would have been Xbox players if the PC version didn't exist. Without this info a 90:10 PC/Xbox split could be the PC version decimating the Xbox sales... 50:50 could be that most people with both platforms went PC... and 10:90 could mean the PC isn't worth porting to. You can also make the reverse argument for each of these scenarios too (well, other than 10:90... that one's pretty bad regardless)..

Not sure if you guys have a video copy floating around. But I found this audio of the actual statement

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qPbKjso22o

Also someone was saying elsewhere that halo 2 and 3 popped up on steam groups AGAIN briefly sometime in the last week. Unfortunately no screencap to back up the statement.

That being said I wish they would decide to start putting halo out simultaneously for PC and X1. Is it a dream that 343 and MS probably will never fulfill yes. I realize its that they need to hold some titles back in order for them to be their "console seller" titles, but at the same time they have a larger audience they can capture if they would just release on both even if it is on PC later (just not 5+ years later!). I just wish this exclusive game deal wasn't for Halo, so I could just enjoy my favorite series without having to shell out $399 for a console to play it as well.

I would be utterly shocked if we see halo 5 coming to pc even by 2017, but I wouldn't be shocked to see this collection be released next summer to hype up halo 5.
